When you want to drive your vintage car, how far do you travel to get to it? Possibly into your garage or out to your driveway? For those vintage car enthusiasts in New York City that is the stuff of dreams. Owning a car in NYC is rare, and owning a vintage car is even rarer, but those who do are committed to the lifestyle. For these three owners, getting to their cars is almost a ritual in itself, and nothing brings more pleasure than slipping behind the wheel of a car that has as much personality and history as the city itself. Like many things in New York City, nothing comes easy, but the challenge makes it all the more worth it.

In Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where I live is the same thing: you don't really need a car, public transport is pretty good and you can bike everywhere. But it is good to have a car for those days off when you just want to go for a drive and chill out a bit.

I had one when I was 16, it was an 87 Mr2 and I nearly crashed it on a dirt road the first day I had it. I put 60,000 hard miles on that car and sold it to buy a 1991 Mr2 2 years later. In all I had 5 Mr2's (not at the same time), that was over 20 years ago and now I'm getting into some old aircooled 911's.

I live in Manhattan and 100% agree with everything the Porsche man is saying! Although not vintage, I drive an older model Mercedes and I pay about $500 to keep it parked a few blocks from my house. Many people ask me why and sometimes even look at me like I’m stupid for having a car in New York City. I really think they’re completely missing the point. I don’t use my car do get to work, shop or even go to a friend’s house. Nobody does. I use it solely for recreational drives only. It’s such a lovely thing to have in a mad city like this. I love taking long drives up to bear mountain and other places I’ve never explored in and around NYC. Late at night, it’s just me in my tiny metal shell, with an amazing sound system and 1000s of miles of free open road just outside of the city. I’m glad to see there are other people like me who go out of their way to own a car in a city that makes it impossible for you to do so.

Gosh, where I live I have the car just down my house and some of the nicest roads at just 2/3 minutes drive. Which is cool when you just wake up in the middle of the night and you grab the car and go for a ride. Then I see these guys living in Manhattan who have to travel to get to the car and... I kind of feel sorry for them. But it's probably part of the game of living in such a unique and beautiful city

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I live in Hendersonville, NC, about a two hour drive from the Tail of the Dragon. It's a gorgeous rural area. I own a 2006 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn Edition, I know it's not a vintage car, but I really do enjoy driving it. Just about every weekend, I take it out, row through the gears, listen to the turbo, and put all the stress from the week behind me. Part of me wants to modify it, but the other part says it perfectly enjoyable as is. But she's not cheap to maintain, I'm only a lube tech at Hunter Subaru and don't make that much. I've want this car for six years, and now I own one, and it brings a smile to my face every time I drive it, despite the haters. That's what matters, in my book.

Loved this video. Perfect balance between the owners and their cars. I've just been put on the insurance of a friend's 1958 Standard Pennant. Have been taking it through town as well as into the countryside. This video sums up my take on classic/historic cars. They cars should be driven, hence my inclusion on the insurance. Obviously come the Scottish winter it'll be garaged but back on the road once the salt is off the road in the spring. Hope to record some in car footage of it driving around scenic routes throughout Scotland.

When I finally get home after a month of working away I feel like a kid on Christmas that first day off when I walk out to the shed with my cup of coffee and open up the doors... brings a smile to my face everytime, the hard bit is always which one to drive first!.

I have to agree with all three of these guys. I live right across the Hudson & constantly drive into the city. I have a passion for old cars as well & have never owned a car past '97(looking into buying a car made when I was 3y/o as of now), but I have never had a problem "dicing" with the cabs as the final gentleman so eloquently put it. I find it oddly comforting knowing that we have this extreme urban environment & extreme wilderness so comically close to one another for our driving enjoyment
