I hear the Candace Newmaker story in every Petscop video, but it still makes me cry every time. The adults treated her so inhumanely.
@bronsoncarder249111 ай бұрын
The worst part to me is that... I just don't see what they were trying to accomplish. I need to read more about the supposed theory behind it, but the general concept is that they were trying to "rebirth" her, so that her parents would accept her? If you're having trouble accepting your child, that's a terrible thing that you should deal with yourself. But, even more than that, the torture they put her through... how does any of that have anything to do with a bond between a parent and a child? And there's just little bits of it that make no fucking sense. They called her a quitter... Because she was still alive, I guess? What was it that she was quitting and how? It's just fucking baffling. I'll never actually understand it, but maybe better context will help... Not sure how it could though. lol
@superskitty933611 ай бұрын
@@bronsoncarder2491 I'm not a psych student or anything, but I think I might be able to explain... SOME of what they were supposedly going for. So it wasn't that her parents couldn't accept her, but that Candace couldn't accept her parents. Or, more accurately, Candace's original, biological parents were abusive, so she was taken away, and then when she was later adopted by Newmaker she acted out, being aggressive and not the most obedient or stable or happy kid at first - like, you know, probably most if not every adopted kid would act. She was probably stressed, traumatised, experiencing mental illness and symptoms of such, having her whole life upended and not knowing if her new family was going to be anything like the old one. (Also I believe she was separated from her younger siblings at that point, but I could be misremembering) Also bear in mind she was I think 7 or 8 years old? It was Jeane Newmaker, the "new mother" who was concerned or perhaps just bothered by Candace's behaviour and attitude so she started taking her to a psychiatrist. The whole "rebirthing" thing was supposed to simulate being "born" again to "meet" Jeane and thus accept her as the role of "mother". I have zero idea if this is or was even a real treatment. Like I said, not my field. Someone else can round off if this was actually a studied thing that had been implemented before? But to me it just sounds dumb. On its own though, it doesn't sound deadly. What pisses me off is that they then put weight on her. They made it deliberately more difficult for her to do what they expected her to do, whether or not she wanted or tried to. They called her a quitter because a CHILD was unable to push HUNDREDS OF POUNDS off of herself while at the same time fighting her way out of a pile of pillows and sheets. They called it laziness, essentially. Presumed that, again an 8 year old, would understand ALL OF that psychological symbolism and then simply choose to say, "nah, being that person's child is too much effort". They simply saw it all as Candace "rejecting" her adoptive family. Instead of, her being physically unable to do so?? Make no mistake, that poor girl died because of a blatant misunderstanding of how abuse and trauma work, and the sheer EGO of at least three people. The mother was hurt that her baby wasn't settling down quick enough, and the supposed therapists were mad at her for their "treatment" not immediately working wonders. It's truly one of the most upsetting stories I've ever heard to this day.

Hey, CSA survivor here, that calendar gave me chills. Since this game is very obviously pointing towards child abuse, the calendar starting with some green, and increasing until it's completely green could imply the abuse started gradually and then turned into a daily affair. @Piiiiiiiiit3 ай бұрын
that’s a really interesting interpretation. I’m personally in the camp of thinking it’s maybe a split child custody calendar, where all the green day’s representing marvin’s custody over care, with the calendar turning all green after he kidnapped her. That’s just what stood out to me as a kid of a split custody divorce, the schedule flip flopped around pretty often before eventually i just started living with my mom full time, so seeing similar shifts reflected in the patterns on the calendar is part of what drew me towards that conclusion.

If it can replace someone’s identity with another’s, it *could* be possible that their gender is perceived differently in their minds. After watching this again, I noticed something potentially chilling in Rainer's note. At the very end of the note he says: "Fuck you all, and fuck me as well. Merry Christmas. Check your bathroom now." We all seem to assume he means the bathroom in game, because that's what Paul does. But this could have a double meaning. Rainer could be asking them to check the house's real bathroom, that Christmas day...to check the bathroom for him. I think Rainer killed himself in that bathroom. With other references to Rainer being dead in the note to Tiara/Belle, and with some of his implied guilt/complicitness in Marvin's shenanigans, this would not surprise me very much. That being said, the threads I have given are unfortunately rather tenous evidence-wise, and this is just speculation. Let me know if you find anything else interesting related to this potential plot thread!

Tbh there is a bit more of evidence regarding the idea that Rainer actually DID kill himself inside that bathroom since in "Petscop Soundtrack" there is an "unused" track called "Bathroom Tomb" with the image representing it being the Ever Care's version of Marvin's House, to be exact it shows where the bathroom would be in Marvin's House

The meta of the entire Petscop series is pretty insane when you think about it, an entire game created by "Paul." and everything in it was purposeful, the glitches, the "random" events and way in which the game is talked about is all done to sell the idea that this game is real, truly masterful work. A small correction at 8:33 - Paul doesn't collect Amber just by glitching through a wall. He opens both gates, then closes one, and gets in before it closes - thus locking himself in Amber's cage - before escaping through a secret passage in the side, leading to the other gate. It's a small detail, but it's relevant to the context of Amber as a character, and what "catching" her means.

I think at its core, this is the story of family secrets. What happens when “keeping it in the family,” “us vs them,” “don’t let anyone see we’re not perfect” morphs into being complicit to something truly evil. There’s no way the family didn’t know to some degree or capacity. I refuse to believe that *no one* had an inkling that something was off about Marvin and how he treated his daughter and wife. They saw it but they kept it quiet because that’s what you do. You keep family problems in the family. Don’t involve police, don’t show your dirty laundry, don’t show anyone outside of the family the truth. It sounds so ridiculous like if they thought for a moment that he could hurt his daughter of *course* they’d do something! But no. Family’s like this are the reason we have the “creepy uncle” stereotype that was so prevalent in pop culture in the past (thankfully were moving past it in the last decade but this is still a thing that happens and that some families just accept, putting the responsibility on the young kids to not wear “provocative” clothes and shit like that). The level of delusion that’s possible when you refuse to accept that there are serious issues in your family, is truly hard to fathom. These are the people who stand by their relatives when their accused of rape or murder or kidnapping etc. despite the evidence, the witnesses, the verdict. Care and Michael and Bella never had a goddamn chance.

My take on the whole thing with Care's father, or at least his obsession with her, is that he originally wanted to be with the sister that 'vanished' but settled on his current wife. They had a daughter that looked somewhat like the vanished sister and the dad's fucked mind believed it was his 'second chance' to be with the woman he actually wanted. So he thought about her in the bath, he got excited over something that was perhaps similar to the sister's behavior, and kidnapped Care to groom her into being the person he wanted and do whatever monsterous things to her.

2:22:40 I have a thought about what that censor could’ve been. Firstly, I think it was a text box. Secondly, this connects back to the other “caskets”(the censored items). One of the caskets was related to a chalkboard. It’s description is… “Five words. Written on a chalkboard, in the dirty building you inhabit.” (We later see that in petscop 23, this refers to a chalkboard in the school). I believe that those five words written on the chalkboard was a question central to petscop. *Do You Remember Being Born?* And I believe that that is what the censor was at the end of Petscop 14. The game asked him “Do you remember being born?”. and I think the reason why it unnerved him so much was because it was the moment he realized that Care was meant to represent him in the game. I believe this because we’ve seen this question in the Quitter’s room, more than likely being for Belle. And Belle, as we have assumed, is a victim of Marvin (and possibly Rainer) trying to rebirth her into Tiara. So, hear me out, according to Nexpo’s explanation, Care was never a real person. Care was meant to represent Paul. And that when Marvin and Anna had a child, it was a boy, who they named Paul. Marvin couldn’t stand this, and he tried to essentially force Paul to be like Lina, doing things like showing Paul his reflection in a flower vase and describing his “grisly deformities”, and possibly plucking his eyebrows. Now, the connection between Paul and Belle is that Belle was a victim of attempted rebirthing because she fought back against, and in Marvin’s eyes, she was a quitter. So like her, Paul was not what Marvin wanted him to be and thus, would also be seen as a quitter by Marvin. And So the censor in Petscop 14 asking Paul “Do You Remember Being Born?” unnerved him so much because it was the moment when everything clicked. The flower vase, the conversation care had with her mom paralleling a conversation he had with his mom, and finally, this question, first directed at Belle, is now directed at him, almost like the game is asking him if he remembers the abuse he suffered as a child. “Do you remember being born?”. Sorry for the long comment!

The quitter part is actually crazy. The programming required to make the mirror image copy you but not quite get it right would have to be extremely complicated.
@rsh903210 ай бұрын
Considering that it isn’t a real game that part could just be a cutscene entirely. Or it could just have a follow player/don’t follow player movement mode
@MidRankedDeity10 ай бұрын
@@rsh9032 who says it isn't a real game exactly?
@rsh903210 ай бұрын
@@MidRankedDeity From what I understand, it isn't. No playable version has been released despite it being several years since the videos were uploaded. Excluding fan made games of course. It would be much easier to make a basic walking sim in some free engine and have certain triggers set up for basic events, while also having cutscenes or animations for more complex movements. Sure, it could all be coded, but that would be a large time investment alongside recording, scripting, and editing these videos.

Mirroring in that era was also done on Bomberman Hero N64 But Lore wise the lettering is correct on left and reversed on players side
@dntbther929810 ай бұрын
It's quite easy actually. Here's one way that it could be done : The mirrored characters is a second player object with a different sprite. Store the player movement in an array and reverse it by adding a *(-1) in the player input and add a delay when a trigger hit. The array allow to still mimic Paul movement 1:1 but with 1 step delay so you see the two synchronize when paul stop moving. Edit : it seems that the movement is only reversed for left-right. Fun fact : in old 3d games, mirrors were expensive to render so they duplicated and mirrored the room ( usually a bathroom ) and the mirror is just a window to that other room. I think silent hill did it.

About your final point: Compare it to Black Mirror's "White Christmas" episode. That punishment of being stuck alive in the virtual world for thousands and thousands of years would be torment, yes, but that's because it's powered on. If we look at Simon in SOMA, all of that time passed without him even perceiving it because he simply wasn't connected to something that was powered on. Like sleeping without dreaming, Simon could elect to just crush/deactivate his new body, and he wouldn't be trapped forever, he'd just stop being. For Petscop, if you melt down the memory card and the disc, nobody would be trapped, right?

1:45:42 "I'll come out in a minute. Keep playing" and then later when Paul checks the description for Care A, which presumably was the big moment the game was leading up to, it says "Check your bathroom now". Idk if you'll ever get back to this, but it's strongly implied that Rainer offed himself in that bathroom after showing the game to the family.

@avalancherelapse9 ай бұрын
@@fiend-ish1090 exactly. Rainer prevents them from checking on him prematurely by saying that he’ll come out soon. Then at the crescendo moment he pretty much orders them to check on him, because he won’t be able to come out himself since he’s dead. It’s the tone of the message and the sequence of calls to action that Rainer makes that made me think this, plus the importance of the in game moment of catching Care A and shining light on Marvin’s crimes.

I find it interesting that the main events of the game are apart in 20 year gaps, Lina’s death in 1977, Care’s kidnapping in 1997, the creation of the channel and Paul’s playthrough in 2017. For it to be consistent and this precise has to mean something, knowing petscop, but I honestly can’t pinpoint to what exactly.
@finn_in_the_bin52639 ай бұрын
Idk if it's this but the average generational gap is around 20 years.. maybe symbolism around intergenerational trauma, made more precise to 20 years like that to fit the themes of time repetition?

@@finn_in_the_bin5263 yep, I think the time gaps being 20 years represents that a generation has come and gone. If we’re to assume that the characters are at least 10-12 while the events happened, the characters that were alive in 1977 would be around 50 in 2017, those alive in 1997 would be at least 30 in 2017, which should mean that a generation has passed. But each generation doesn’t heal from it because of petscop, aka the story being retold, either through verbal recounts or active abuse which are like the abuse of Marvin

I know this is just an elaborate and genius gourmet creepy pasta, but this just makes me yearn for a sandbox game that just progressively gets weirder and weirder the more you discover and peel back each layer. You could happily play the base sandbox game filled with hundreds or thousands of different activities from tons of different genres. But with with each activity, the longer you stay the weirder things start to get, and it leads you down a rabbit hole. And as everyone starts to discover all of them they just keep stacking up and leading to crazier and crazier stuff. So fun.
