Fully Charged is an online show hosted by Robert Llewellyn (Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge, Carpool), which looks at why we need to change how we think about energy consumption now. From looking behind the myths of renewable energy, to seeking the truth about electric cars, Robert Llewellyn demonstrates what the future could have in store for us all.

I have one of these... love it Low revolution Diesel Electric drive at in-town speeds Really smooth gear change Particulate filter Lovely driving height and position (looking down on Prius drivers) 200 BHP (Combined) Lovely cabin environment Low CO2 and no road tax avg 50mpg

Plugin-diesel-hybrid seems to be the ultimate solution for now, run on battery in towns and on diesel on long journeys across the country. Relatively small (cheep) battery, no NOx in town and low CO2 on long journeys.

Something I'd be interested in is how long the DPF would hold up if they engine isn't being used much. There are already reports of them failing due to not being recharged enough via 'italian tune up' and I can only imagine it would be worse in a hybrid.

I always thought the 308 hybrid looked a lot sexier, but it is good to see them get the drive-train working well. The plug-in version sounds fantastic, I hope they don't make GM's mistake and oversize the range extender.

@adric22 I reckon the main incentive is the flexibility, the range and the relative ease of use. All of which should not be underestimated.

The points you make about the 'solution' being a blend of different technology and techniques is a good one. As Fully Charged's strap-line is now 'The Future of Energy', perhaps an occasional feature on other energy topics would be good. One of interest to me is why car companies don't want to support the use of high % biofuels in their cars, not even when commercially produced to high standards (and I'm really thinking from WVO sources here).

@grungerman Offcourse, what you are are propably thinking of is using the waste heat from the powerplant to heat houses with, by heating oil and then send it out to houses where it goes trough a heat exchanger and the warmed water from the heat exchanger is then cycles trough the radiators. Yeah, I've lived with that, it works, but you also loose a lot of heat in the hot oil pipes - Still, it's a nice way to make a powerplant more effective.

Nice review of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 4, any chance of actually testing a RHD version for a week or so, to see what it's like to actually live with etc ?? !!
@Grumpy_old_Boot

@grungerman You can also use regular water to hold heat. I've seen a house which used the sunshine to heat up a large water tank inside the house, and then it would shed heat in the night as the house cooled down. Pretty ingenious way to do it. Offcourse, it required some huge highlight windows, which lets out more heat than a normal roof would, so it wasn't perfect. But, maybe you could make the heating apparatus outside, and then cycle the water inside the radiators, during night.

As a primary source of energy, Hydrogen does not make much sense, since it takes more energy to produce than it gives off. But if you have a nice and windy day and a big windmill farm makes more electricity than is being consumed, make hydrogen ! Use it as a battery. Then you can use it in a powerplant to help weather times when there's no wind, or in peak consumtion hours when more is consumed than produced. The Peugeot looked nice, and will probably serve well as a transition period vehicle.

I do enjoy your reviews and generally agree with your perspective. I understand that hydrogen may come from the big gas companies, but with zero emissions on our end? Doesn't that balance out somehow?

Interesting development and even more interesting tidbit about hydrogen coming from oil companies. It makes the hype over it make more sense, though your uses for it would be immediately viable outside of cars and I hope they are doing something to develop the batteries for those industries and uses until it can become viable for cars. In the mean time, electric cars are coming out much faster to market and I believe more and more people are looking to them for their next car. I am.

@grungerman I was thinking long term storage ... such as saving energy from autmn storms for the winter heating ... that's several months of storage at least, and once you get into such durations, ordinary batteries start to loose power. But yes, for short term, deep cycle batteries are probably still the best.

@XitUp Biodiesel is not VO. Pure VO, yes of course that can't be used in modern CR diesels, but WVO biodiesel is fully reacted oil and has a viscosity to traditional diesel.

Batteries have the inherent problem of RANGE and CHARGING time. Fuel is dirty & expensive, But it does have Range & Quick refueling in it's favor. The only way I can see batteries good for range is if the freeways and motorways were built with an electromagnetic field so electrics could recharge as they go. The ICE does have one thing in it's favor. They can be engineered to spin a generator and do it very well for a smaller footprint on the environment. I think we'll stuck with them awhile.

For over ten years I have absolutely loved my diesel VW. But here in the US the options are few and that Peugeot is unobtainium. The basic problem is cost. If my TDI where a hybrid I wonder what a new battery pack would be for an 11 yr old automobile. You can't make a good argument for conservation of hydrocarbon output without cost conservation as well. I would love to go off the grid some day...

Replace the battery with HHO unit and integrate solar panels on it to run the diesel engine with diesel and hydrogen, when you look at all the stuff including emissions what goes to making batteries, simply running the generator more cleanly gives much better effect environmentally than batteries, with proper setup it could go way under 3 liters per 100km and emissions would be even cleaner than they are already now.

@VideoTimChannel Agreed, or at least not much cheaper. Though at least with WVO biodiesel at least it is true recycling and carbon neutral. Of course the energy and land demands of producing crops JUST for biofuel really don't stack up, especially with the increasing need to use viable land for food production. Until I can afford a true hybrid, I'm just focusing on he improvements driving style can make to fuel economy.

The diesel-powered Lupo hybrid )Germany-only car) scored 88 mpg highway (80 combined). No gasoline powered car, including your prius, will ever reach that high. It is why diesel hybrids are preferred..... the engines are simply more efficient (due to more-thorough combustion) .

I'm just getting interested in different ways to power cars so I admit I'm still a bit ignorant about some of the specifics, but can somebody tell me how non-plug-in hybrids are more helpful for the environment? if the engine needs to be turned on in order to charge the battery, doesn't that use fuel and pollute just as it would if it were driving?

Just because Mercedes put a high quality Bosh generator in a car doesn´t mean that Bosh cant make cheaper generators for those car brands that want to cut costs. I know from experience that Peugeot is loaded with crappy cheap parts. And so are many other brands, it´s not only the name you pay for in a premium car.

So the big benefit of this over a traditional hybrid is that you have the benefits of diesel economy and AWD? And yet no mention of the downsides: The clunky and unreliable PSA automated gearbox with its fragile clutch and dual mass flywheel, the diesel particulate filter and all the other diesel bits, e.g. turbo, high pressure fuel injection etc. Thanks, but not thanks. I'll keep the Prius and do without the dubious benefit of four wheel drive and diesel.
