What a great car! I love all the different sounds older diesels made. Thanks for the excellent audio-it really took me back to my childhood. In the USA we never had many diesels, so it was always unique to ride in my granny’s car which was an oddity in our town.

Van 1975 tot 1978 een 404 Diesel gehad, bouwjaar 1972. Deze had de 1e versnelling omhoog en een tuimelschakelaar voor gloeien en starten. Ongeveer 90000km mee gereden.

the 404 & 504 were over engineered car that could easily do at least 1 million miles before rebuilt.

Some really good camera work. Was it from a scooter? Helps to give a good feel for the sight & sound of a diesel 404. I noticed no soot from the exhaust. Has a urea kit been installed?

Lovely video. From the dashboard with circular dials, this would be a later model, post 1967, but it retains the older dog leg gear shift where second and 4th are up. Maybe diesels didn’t get the H pattern shift with first and third up till even later?

you are correct. This is a in between model when they did the change of things. Its from march 1967

Hello. My Diesel 404 was 1973 model with XD 88 engine. Your 404 seems to be older, it's the old gear box...From what year is your 404 ? Your first gear is down...

I noticed that this 404 has the old gear box used in the 203 & 403 but the later 404 dashboard with circular dials.

My father did over 30000 kilometers in his black 1966 Diesel, it just would not die, back in the day these were better then Mercedes 190 Diesel 'heckflosse' I guess this is a '67 model, orange front indicators, 'new'dash with the 3 round dials but still the old gearbox with first gear down. I had a mint petrol XC 6 with the same gear pattern. the wheels are not original, Diesels had no cooling holes in the wheels and drum brakes all around.

It does have original holes in the wheels because it needs cooling for the thermostable brakes. which means: 2 brake cylinders each wheel front. So 4 pistons. will do a video of it someday for you.

@@koenedens8979 I had a mint '67 404 petrol XC 6 with the thermostables & hydrovac assistance, a lousy system as these Scania brakes grab very hard ! The 404 has been so long in production that when I was `19 years old you'd pick 'em up for around 500 to a 1000 rock hard guilders, with friends we bought a maroon 74 Diesel in poor condition to go on holiday to Greece, we fixed the car up technically the body was surpisingly good, oil, cooling system, filters, wipers and a new battery a few new glow plugs , the thing lasted with a friend for over 4 years !

Your car still has the lovely old starting panel, the maroon 74 Diesel had the super-modern ignition key with an amber light on the dash panel when you could start the car.

Mijn god, ik was vergeten hoeveel herrie de diesels uit die tijd maakten. Maar mooi dat je er één bewaard. Merendeel van alle diesels is opgereden.

La boite de vitesses avec la 1ere en bas ne correspond pas au tableau de bord à compteurs ronds, clignotants oranges. Le bruit du moteur est anormal, il y a un problème de calage.
