The starter stopped working on my 406 recently, some things were overlooked such as it getting weaker and weaker to start. One day it stopped working altogether.
Its an easy enough job to remove the starter on a 406, three bolts secure it in place, two nuts are used to hold on the various connectors. Removing the air filter housing and fuel filter housing seems to make it easier to gain access to the starter.
A spare starter from the 406 i stripped for parts back a few years ago was used as the replacement.

Great video! I found that you do not need to pull out all the fuel lines from fuel filter, just flip the fuel filter housing upwards and you have the access to starter

Excellent video -- one which proved very helpful to me yesterday morning! Had been meaning to change the starter on my HDi 90 for a while as cranking on cold mornings was taking anywhere between 4 and 8 seconds. After changing the motor this weekend the car starts and sounds like a different machine. Very happy. Thank you. The only difference I noticed between your engine bay and mine is that access to the bottom bolt (at 3:17 in this video) was greatly impeded by part of (what I believe was) the braking system. I had to remove a plastic housing unit and move it out of the way in order to get proper access to the bolt. I also removed the air filter housing tray to improve visibility -- may not be necessary but helped me.

Hola que tal muy buenos los vídeos ayudan bastante te felicito. Una pregunta tengo un 406 hdi me empezó a fallar a tirar humo blanco cuando se desarma la tapa se ve el pistón lado correa como fundido o quemado que será esto a que se debe gracias

I have a 2.0 HDi 90 Estate (2001) which I love. I've spent some time repairing/replacing trim and parts and it looks good but unfortunately it's difficult to start on cold morning. The car will always start but the cranking is long and slow. I've decided it's either down to the battery or starter (or both). Following your brilliant guide, would I be okay to just remove the fuel filter and pipes? I've always steered away from doing it on 'newer' cars given the pressure of the fuel system.

With regards the starter, the best course of action would be to get a battery analyser to see what state of healt the battery is in. Most motor factors keep these machines and can tell you what condition your battery is in. Although at the moment with the Covid-19 issue it may be a while before most motor factors are open again. If you have a battery charger try it first, charge the battery overnight and then put it back into the car, see if the cranking speed improves at all. The fuel filter and pipes, the fuel doesnt really become high pressure until it gets to the high pressure pump at the engine, the line from the tank to the high pressure pump at the engine, a bit of diesel may leak out if the pipe is removed but it is at a relativley low pressure.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Hello and thanks for such a helpful reply. In the time since I last posted I managed to source a new battery before the garages closed and this has cured the slow starting. It took a while but I managed to date the old battery as 2010. I also followed the guidance for changing batteries while protecting the ECU but now the EML illuminates for around 2 seconds after starting. When civilisation has recovered I'll check for codes. In the meantime keep safe and thanks for your excellent videos.

As they say here about diesels "no smoke no poke". All i know about them is they sound absolutely horrible, don't worry C5 V6 videos will be coming soon.

Should, i did with the Xsara and 305 when they arrived its just knowing what to say. Still think for fixing videos the subtitles is much easier and gets to the point faster.

Do I need to disconnect "cables on the other side of the starter"? Isn't it enough to disconnect the battery? As always, great content! Cheers!

Hi The battery disconnecting is just a precaution to prevent sparks flying, when you go to undo the nuts on the starter they are positive wires, there is always a chance the wires, ratchet spanner etc may short against something that is grounded to the negative side of the battery. A safety precaution. Nonetheless you do need to undo the cables/wires on the other end as they are held onto the starter.

Hi there, unfortunately i have only owned one petrol 406 a V6 which is now sold. The best thing to do would be to ask on the 406 owners club Facebook page about the location of this part I dont think they are particularly hard to change done one on a clio once

On EW10J4 engine you have to remove fuel lines, cables and air intake manifold to remove starter. I did it 2 times. Starter motor works well on the desk but when you install in its place some time can not lock to freewheel easily. Do you know any trick exist on petrol engines. Before tighten the bolts starter moves about 5 mm on the mounting surface . There is no guide pin to fit tightly and no accurately defined guide.

Hello, I would say the EW10 is a different arrangement to the DW10 diesel engine, the diesel essentially has the intake and exhaust on the back side of the engine giving much more access to the front where the starter as a result. When you say the starter works well on the desk is it rotating ok, but is the gear moving outwards to engage with the flywheel ok? Perhaps the arm that moves the gear has some play causing it to not properly engage, Also what condition is the teeth on the starter gear, and on the flywheel. The starter should slide into alignment dowels towards the end of their travel, that avoids the need for you to set its position, is there any chance these dowels have fell out. How does the starter sound when it tries to turn over the engine?

@@BarisSOZUAK Emanuals online do repair manuals for the 406 they are basically what the dealer has. It might be worth getting one of those manuals, it should cover the petrol engine in more depth. However also ask on the 406 owners club facebook page or the forum. More chance of finding someone that has worked on that particular engine.

I cant remember 100% i think it was a T50 or T55, i use this set www.ebay.co.uk/p/Teng-Tools-23-Piece-TX-Bit-Socket-Set-TTTX23/26016617493?iid=131759078129&chn=ps A very useful set if working around a 406, pricey but it is good quality. Damn I hate my car so much right now...!!! My 406 is having a starter problem and I really can't stand this hell of a design!!!! I am just looking forward to replace it as soon as I will be able to!!! Damn!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the design it is easy to get at and replace, i have worked on my fair share of cars now and know the 406 is one of the easier ones to work on. The starter itself is not expensive to get a replacement, or even less to have it refurbished.

BestBuildPC Power of imagination What tool is this? This job went quite safely and all parts went back where they came from, just have a free space and some plastic trays to keep a track of where the nuts&bolts go
