As an artist myself, who has been practicing different types of art for years, the fact that such a minimal effort piece that’s just 2 big rectangles with a strip of white down the middle sells for $43 million is just depressing when there are so many artists out there that spend hours, days or even months on their artwork, there is nothing wrong with abstract art because that still takes skill and effort to make a well balanced abstract piece. But when someone clearly just put one strip of tape on a big canvas and then painted the whole thing blue, that shouldn’t be worth that much. And it makes me sad to see that a lot of art with such beautiful detail will most of the time go for less money than the art that looks like there was no thought or idea behind it.

I feel your pain. This sort of rubbish ticks me off as well. My mom told me a story that explains a lot as to why simple paintings or “trash” paintings sell for a lot of money. My mom is really good at drawing fictional things like zombies, elves, orcs. One day, when she was in high school, around Halloween, the bar in town was holding an art contest. She and one of her friends decided to draw three pictures. They drew one picture together and it was extremely detailed, and then each through their own style separate. The themes were Halloween based. Several other kids also participated in this contest. Anyways the day of the contest before nightfall, my mom decided to make one more quick piece of art. It was a big yellow moon with a yellow eyed owl sitting on a branch silhouette across the moon. A very simple painting. And it one 1st prize. Her friend who is now angry at this point at her, asked how a simple owl was better than his very detailed zombie apocalypse drawing. And she said, “You’re presenting art and a bar, everyone was going to be drunk, so something detailed would be hard for them to see.” Just know your audience. Also people who spend that kind of money on “art” is more so doing it because to them it’s a pissing contest.

I study art history and those high prices is a very recent phenomenon. The boom of prices began around the 60' and aver since it's been exponential. Actually Peggy Guggenheim which was a massive figure in the world of art collections and galleries said herself that all of this is dumb and that those prices are insane. It's a process of gentrification of art, which hasn't always been a thing. It's sad because the money often doesn't profit artists.

I actually covered the onement VI painting (blue with white strip) for a school project and the reason for it being absurdly expensive is not the art itself but the history of owners who have owned the painting. As someone who studied art history…for a minor so I’m not 100% a nerd….the inflated valuable of these works of art make more sense when you known the historical context of why that painting was significant. It’s not necessarily about the aesthetics, more the value of owning that piece of history. Also for a lot of these painting that were “cheaper” it’s because there’s iconic pieces that were purchased by museums a long time ago that will NEVER be put on the market again. But if for whatever reason they went for auction they’d shoot up in price ~ especially those Van Goghs.

I understand that the arts of famous, dead artists are worth a lot. Because it has collections value. It is no longer produced so the value grows, it's old and famous. But the modern art pieces with authors are still there, I don't see what's a difference between them and million other pieces produced by unknown artists, that are almost the same. I get that they are painted by someone famous, but why did they even become famous if the art does not look that different from art from other artists?

When it comes to expensive clothes I feel like there's two variants, one of the key indicators for a high price is to make it look as worn in and crap as possible, the other is to keep it as boring and clean as possible with subtle details. Where as cheap clothes they try to sell and make a name so they make it fancy and stick out, compared to a known name that could sell a white shirt with some stitching for 5-10 times+ the amount as an identical shirt with a different name stitched on.

As an artist the whole concept of deciding how much art pieces will cost really ticks me off I'm an art major in college and we have to study a lot of principles and elements like composition, proportion, value, contrast, texture, negative space, patterns, and different materials we can use for mediums. But you get sculptures and paintings with so little effort that it looks like something a freaking toddler could make, yet somehow they're worth nearly half a billion dollars And the works that actually look like effort has been put into them for some reason is way less It just so insulting, like they're spitting into the faces of the artists that are actually passionate about their work

People would purchases "pieces of nothin" and receive a certificate that they had bought some "Void". The most expensive piece of nothing sold at the time was I think around $1600 or thereabouts, in 1958. On the opposite side, there was a rival painter, Arman, who made an exposition called "Le Plein" (The fullness) in 1960, which was a gallery so packed with crap crammed inside that it was too full to even step inside. Unsure if there were any purchases made then.

There are ppl who took art history and have the appreciation for those “scribbles” and “doodles” that are actually expressionist and post modernism. And there are ppl like felix, who want ‘pretty’ art and expect pieces from someone who’s good at drawing 💀 Like boi you said yourself art is subjective, always has been. These movements are about the artists emotions and experiences, or how they perceive the world around them. That is still art and requires skill to create that perception. Jackson pollocks work in particular was all about his technique, random yet controlled lines of watered down paint that he would drip onto the canvas on the floor. He was inspired by a number of things, such as the grand canyon where his dad worked, and how the rock and cliffs would fill the space below. These are the kinds of paintings that you gotta just sit with and look into them deeper than face value to connect to them.

there has to be some sort of money laundering involved with some paintings, because I can't believe that there are this many billionaires in these auctions to outbid each other until the price skyrockets that high. with 200m they could buy literally anything including whole companies, cities, skyscrapers, stocks, biggest diamonds, which would also increase in worth over time and aren't useless if you drop them once
@Matuterocks

Art pieces also increase in worth over time, there is a market and they are the commodities. So if you can launder money on an investment, why not?

Yes. I don't know the specifics, but in Art Class, we learned about the high prices being this way so that billionaires can buy/donate the pieces and then be able to write it off of their taxes.

yep. Pretty much, which is why Felix had me laughing the whole time he was freaking out ;w; but tbh that blue one deserves the criticism. I'm still unsure about that piece since it got sold. I guess the name and the artist who made it really had a lot of significance to its creation, but I still dont know if it deserved that much money. Literally more expensive than van Gogh's irises thouhg I'm just biased, too.

To be fair to "The Card Players" tho, Paul Cezanne is one of the most iconic artists ever. I can *sorta* see a price tag for that when it's basically buying a piece of history as an investment. Definitely depressing tho that even after the fame following his death, the Van Gogh (Irises) is still one of the cheapest ones on here lmao

I should say *so much money* for art, instead of *helping a country*. It's obvious why they aren't "spending" their $100M on a country, there is less money to be laundered doing that, if at all, and the tax cuts wouldn't be adequate enough to do what they are attempting.
