Hey guys! Back this week with another CCW option, this time it’s my .38 Special. I go over a little bit of my history with the J Frame platform, drawing from the front pocket, and reload options. Feel free to let me know what you think about the content, the audio, or anything that might help us improve!
Train hard, stay ready.

A couple of years ago, I bought a plain jane 642 on a whim, simply because a snubbie in .38spl is just classic. It doesn't get a lot of carry because I generally carry a Sig P365 when I need to carry a smaller gun, but there are times when it comes in handy. I sometimes carry it in a Galco Ankle Glove when I'm driving long distances because it's easy to get to from a seated position. I also carry it in my jacket pocket because I can fire it from within the pocket if need be.

I like the "driving pistol" ideology... And the ankle holster seems like a great solution to the problems it presents for location/retention/security of the firearm... For semi autos some type of large neodymium magnet (or preferably kydex) hard mouted in the ideal access spot for your particular vehicle is pretty awesome... I'd alwaways prefer to immediately exit the vehicle already armed and concealed or take an impact/rollover without losing my firearm or having to carefully reholster before being able to relocate in a very very bad scenario... Cheaper priced but still reliable semi autos are perfect for this, but buy a simple cable style keyed lockbox if you don't have a lockable console or glove box for whenever you leave your vehicle out of sight, atleast that may slow down most opportunistic felons from accessing a pistol... Im sure the amount of pistols stolen from cars every year is absurd, especially in Texas and the Southeast 🤦‍♂️(I've also made some mounts that just use the clip on a kydex holster so a locked vehicle gun could live in that vehicle locked, then positioned for driving, then used for carrying if you had to use the vehicle with a pocket carry option that day and then plans change... But an ankle holster solves alot of problems for someone with limited weapon/vehicle choices or in an area where car smash and grabs with criminals carrying more tools is common... Even if it's a full size light bearing size ankle holster 🤣 Atleast it's attached to you at all times, is accessible during a collision or quick exit, and just requires a low profile holster swap and stowing the ankle holster to continue your day without the need to worry about arming criminals... 👍

I almost always carry my P365 but I have a Smith 638 with a crimson trace grip. I live in Orlando and it’s hot n sweaty so when I have my swooshy shorts on and I’m taking the dog for a quick walk around the lake, it’s perfect to put in my pocket without the weight pulling my shorts down. Same for riding my bicycle, it’s easier to carry, or at least I find it so.

I'd only use the extra rounds in the grip as a tertiary load. Primary in the gun, secondary in a speedloader or strip and if those are all gone, last ditch, the ones in the grip. Fumbling with loose rounds in a high stress encounter is asking for trouble, IMO.

I own the safari land speed loaders and you do not have to twist the knob to release the cartridges, it has a plunger tip that makes contact with your cylinder lock and it pushes up on the plunger and you get an automatic release of your cartridges as you push down on the speed loader. They are quick and effective.

I think that of all carry methods that pocket carry is the easiest to adapt to. I've been practicing having my hand in my pocket since I was a little kid! After carrying for 30+ years I changed my routines after retirement and began pocket carrying when I walk for exercise and it was extremely easy to adapt to. If your pistol has an exposed hammer, practice covering the hammer with your thumb as you draw to prevent snagging on the pocket material. Good video.

Coch, you don't need to twist for Safariland speedloader. Just push down on the edge of the speedloader and the cartridges should fall off. The one you have to twist id the HK speedloader with the silver knob. Just got the S&W bodyguard 38 special, with hogue tamer grips. It's the oddest J-frame ever, has a center button cylinder release, polymer frame, & the cylinder turns clockwise. I chose not to get the laser for concealment. This thing looks right, feels right, & fits right. Got the Galco pocket holster, so the whole package looks tacticool. It doesn't have the ejector button on the side so it makes it easier to load the speedloader. The should make the ejector metal instead of that cheap plastic. I painted the front sight with some white nail polish. A cop friend of mine let me shoot his j-frame one time and it was like smacking your hand with a hammer every time you pulled the trigger. I put on the Hogue grips to mitigate some of the masochist pain. Going old school with the Hornady 158 gn lead semi wad cutter, & HS-6 +P load. Very light weight and easily concealable and deadly. If Colt comes back with the aluminum frame 6 shot, it would sell. You'll see one or two of these j-frames used in gun stores all the time cause so many people get rid of them after they try shooting them a couple of times and find out they hurt.

Hey Yang, kung fu, I figured out the safari land speed loader after I made the video, but I don’t really carry speed loaders because they don’t fit in your pocket as well as a speed strip. I was just showing options, because my way works for me, but may not work for everyone. Your set up and ammo choices sound spot on.

Very good presentation, Coch. I have two of the original 640 .38 Specials, and yes they are rated for +P+. And they are indeed heavy. I bought a 642 a few years ago, and it’s a lifesaver for summer pocket carry. I really like the Zeta 6 j-frame ammo holders for spare ammo. I have carried revolvers for nearly 40 years, trained well by a large western LE agency, and have tried every carry option under the Sun….. shoulder rigs, ankle rigs, inside/outside waistband, you name it. The options you have outlined in this video are the ones I have settled on as well. They’re the best you can do within the limits of a lightweight revolver. Lots of training with the safariland speedloaders makes for surpringly fast reloads. I’ve also settled on the Hornady 110 grain critical defense, non +P. The +P loads are a bit much for these old, arthritic hands. Thanks for the video.

I had to reload my issued Colt DS w/a speedloader in a 1974 gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects. It got me back in the fight in seconds. In retirement my EDC is either a 340PD or 442 Pro Series backed up by a speedstrip & speedloader in the center console of my car. Not all my jeans/trousers have pockets deep enough to conceal a J Frame so that’s when my LCP comes out of the safe. The best thing about pocket carry is you can walk along w/your hand in your pocket, on the gun, and not raise anyone’s concern about what you’re doing.

For home defense, a green laser can work as both low power illumination and a targeting device on a revolver. The green laser reflected off the ceiling provides a decent amount of light AND preserves your night vision…and possibly your advantage since you shouldn’t need much light to navigate your own home. Btw, the red laser doesn’t do double duty as I’ve tried both (Crimson Trace).

I carried a 640 no-dash in .38 Special for several years as a BUG or for UC. You’re right that it’s heavy. I’ve hated to go the airweight route because light weight, lousy sights, and higher cost ammo/limited selection isn’t appealing. Coch, The method of use for the Safariland comp1 speed loader is incorrect. Unlike the SK loader, there is no need to twist anything in order to get the cartages to release from comp1 loader. There is no knob to turn, simply aligned bullets with cylinder chambers and push straight down on the loader, the cartridges will release and be seated into the cylinder. Carried these for 10 years.

If I was a company, I do not think that I would want Coch to buy my products. The ones he purchases from always seem to go out of business......

Kind of funny to see revolver carriers "upgrading" to other revolvers, and revolver accessories.

Options more than upgrades, everyone has different requirements, I just want people to be aware of what is out there so they can make the right choice for themselves.

Very interesting. Too bad no one has invented some sort of cheap cylinder swap ability so you don't have to bother with trying to get the cartridges into the cylinder under stress. Heck even an expensive cylinder swap would be worth it. I prefer my P365 for deep concealment. Twenty ounces or so loaded. Mine has twelve rounds in the mag. Plus...magazine. I know, I know....am I not worried that it will jam the first time I try to shoot it? I'm not. Sorry...flashed back to a debate I had with my brother.

Nope. The best revolver caliber is 327 mag. It hits almost as hard as 357 mag with less recoil, and more ammo capacity. And can shoot cheaper 32 cal rounds from 32 s&w long or short, 32 h&r mag or 32 acp with moon clips.
