One of my orchids has drooping green leaves and the stem is starting to lose its green color. The roots look okay, and I want to make sure everything is okay. Can you help please? All my other orchids are fine and I have an orchid that is older than this one but the stem is a healthy dark green

9:46 Hello! My orchid finally started growing a new stem after 1.5 years. It was my greatest moment when I saw it start to shoot up! I just noticed this morning, after several weeks of it growing rapidly up to about 14 inches that I have even been able to curve with rotating towards light, that the tho is now turning brown. The first node below where it is turning brown looks like it is leaking some type of fluid. I am not sure if I should give up on this stem completely? It would tear me up to cut it all the way back after several years for me attempting to get new stems on my orchids! It has 2 nodes that look healthy still below the leaking one. I cannot find anything in your videos about this issue specifically. Any help would be so appreciated!

All of my Phals are from people who had them only while in bloom. They then pass them to me, and I cut the spike. I have one that had no spike for 2 years and then last August 4 th it bloomed from a newly grown spike. It is still in bloom now on March 10 th. There were 28 huge flowers and it still has 6 big and gorgeous blooms. I do not understand this, but love it.

How did you make it to bloom for so many months? Did you use fertilizer when it was in bloom? Do you use rain water or tap water? Did you soak it once a week?

Orchids can be surprising as you said. I had one blooming from under the roots!! I saw something that looked like a new root, but it was turning purple, till I realized it was not one, but 2 flowers together growing from under the old roots. Amazing.

I used to cut my spikes all the time and then I realized some of them wouldn’t bloom back again for a while, so I switched to leaving the spikes and it’s given me better results. 😊 out of my 24 phals, 15 re-bloomed from their old spikes and also grew new ones. I think this is more common as they mature though. Younger plants seemed to skip a blooming season for me.

I just cut my flower spike this week, because I made several mistakes since first repotting it at the end of December. A couple weeks ago, having grasped my compounding errors, essentially stepped back to say you either live or die now, I won't mess with you anymore. But, seeing the roots green and thicken again, the leaves firming back up, I cut the spike, and finding the spike in the first place is what started me messing with it to try and give it better. I regret that I put the orchid through rounds of stress, but I have been appreciating this journey, and fingers crossed we've struck a balance, and your videos have been plant-life saving, thank you.

Hello Ms. Orchid. Can you believe that I have had an orchid for 11 years? It bloomed for three years and had a keiki, which I still have alive. Then, it stopped blooming for a few years. I guess it was because I moved and she did not like the new environment. But, 3 years ago, I moved again to a cooler apartment and it bloomed again and the flowers were so pretty and so many and lasted for 6 months. I moved back again to my old apartment, which is warmer and doesn't have too much sunlight, but in March of this year, I noticed that it was shooting a new flower spike and it bloomed again in May. It has only a few flowers, and I hope they last for a little longer. It is really hot in NYC right now. But, I love my orchid so much. It's been 11 years together and I will never give up on her and on her keiki. Thank you for all your videos. I always come back to them to make sure I am trying my babies the right way. Thank you!!

Hi, my experience is that all my phals benefited from repotting and the flowers indeed looked stronger and more vigorous after a few days (my boyfriend told me a bit jealously). All orchids I've purchased so far still had their coco fiber plug on the butt. I don't want to risk rotting in any case so I free it from it and give good new medium. I experienced some bud blast but this mostly was explained by too much hair flow while transporting, too low temperatures during transporting (these were gifted ones and I couldn't influence it) or a too cold window where the tip of the flower spike had contact to. Almost every mini phal branched out so far. That's why I love them so much. I also have one that blooms fur 5 month now and now produces a completely new spike befor the old one dried down. My phals usually bloom for 4 to 6 month. It's amazing 😍

I have an orchid that dropped its flowers like it should have and in the summer I finally decided to cut the spikes about 2 months ago, it was a gift that had two and looked amazing. After cutting the spikes, it seems the roots have taken over. new roots are growing like crazy and a new spike has grown a couple of inches just within the last month or so. I wasn't planning on repotting just yet. I fertilized it for the first time at the end of July. That's when I noticed the growth increased. the latest set of leaves also grew pretty fast after removing the spikes. The plant is thriving. I just want to know if a flower spike showing now is normal. Roots are growing so fast I'll need to repot it. I'll review some more of the videos because they have been some of the best educational videos on the subject I've seen. I thought I had seen one on pruning leaves and roots maybe.

My one orchid was given to me last Valentines Day (2021). The blooms fell off when I re-potted it. The flower spikes then turned brown, so I cut them down. It’s (only) been over a year and no new flower spikes have grown. But, the orchid is currently growing a third leaf since I’ve had it. I figure that a flower spike will grow in its own time since the leaves are healthy.

I didn't cute the spikes and now I have a rebloom on both spikes and in one of them even with a secondary branch. And from another phal that is more recently bought and still has its flowers, I noticed that the tip of the flower spike is elongating with more blooms. So cool. And I'm really happy cause in some of my phals I'm noticing new leaves and new roots. Yes! I'm doing smth right!

One of my rescued Phalaenopsis started to produce new buds on the spike I left, but then dropped them. Then, I noticed the leaves looked dehydrated even though I was watering sufficiently. I remembered you said that usually means a root problem. Sure enough, most of the original roots died off except for two very small roots. However, It has 3 bright, green root buds at the base. I removed it from the bark/moss mix and placed it in straight sphagnum moss. The leaf wrinkles have smoothed out with one leaf still a bit droopy, but I am still hesitant to cut he spike even though I know I should. After watching this video (again) I will cut the spike tonight.

I have a question. Let's say you are looking at two orchids at the flower shop: one with 2 primary spikes, one with 3 spikes. How much do genetics influence how many primary spikes an orchid will have when reblooming? In other words, is it worth paying more at the shop for an orchid with more primary spikes? TIA! Love the channel. I'm listening to the videos as a pass time. I've just recently got into orchids, tropicals are more of my thing, and I absolutely love how diverse your videos are.

I kept most of my phals’ spikes over the last year if they didn’t dry out. Now that they’re reblooming, most of them are throwing out new branching spikes right from the old ones. I have a big white phal that had three spikes last year. This winter it threw out two branches from each of the old spikes, plus a new fourth (seventh?) spike from the base.

I'm growing some out of different phal. Stems. Fingers crossed they work out. 2 stems from the same plants are getting keikis. The others unfortunately died.. So maybe it depends on the kind of phal. Or the ones I'm growing now, will eventually die too :( it's very tricky but exciting. It was a video show from a German plant "doctor" he build a mini terrarium (plastic bottle, etc) spagnum moss with aspirin +c(as a fertilizer) it's been 4 weeks now, around 12 weeks it should be ready to repot. Wish me luck😊

@carriem7790
@carriem7790 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of orchid but most common phals are ok into the 50s or high 40s F as long as it’s not for long periods of time. As for high temps, into the 80s F is fine. They do need temperature fluctuations to bloom, the nighttime drop in temp in the Fall/Winter triggers them to start blooming.

Hi Danny, can't thank you enough for your videos, I have learned so much! I'd like your advice for my orchid. Two years ago I had to go away for a long time and left my plants to the care of family. When I was back the orchid had most of its aerial roots broken, root rot and a keiki! I set to help mom (repotting etc) and give the keiki time to grow. Keiki has only 2 roots 1 and 2 inches respectively, 4 leaves and a spike with coiple of flowers!. The mother also has a flower spike that is forming buds. I don't know if I should cut the keiki at this stage, because mother seems weak, dehydrated although I watered and fertilized her yesterday and I know her roots are not many. I am also struggling with humidity in my house despite running humidifier and pebble trays. Will cutting the keiki now help them both? Thank you for taking the time, a "yes" or "no" would be enough. This is a Just Add Ice orchid but she was my first one who started me learning about orchids and she is trying her best to survive. Thank you once more!

I purchased a Bellina seedling and 1 of the leaves were affected by pest, so it has 2 little holes where it was eaten away by pests.. Will it recover or continue to grow like that until I get a new leaf? I haven't been able to find much information anywhere else. Over the years we had numerous plants die on us. So this last one we had started to die or maybe just lose its flowers. I saw a video over a year ago and decided to try what I saw. Basically I removed all of the pot medium, cut away the dead roots and simply put the orchid back in the pot with just water filled roughly 1/4 up from the bottom. Holy moly, I got new leaves bloomed, a secondary flower spike and after a few months we have had 8 beautiful flowers that have lasted probably going on 6 months now. Lol whatever works I guess

One is ok, and the other 3 are well I don’t know?? I think the problem started because, I never checked the roots when I purchased them. I’ve tried everything and nothing has worked.. Hoping you can help. I don’t know if you could do a video to help me. My problem is this. I do really well with dendrobium, catlleya, vanda and oncidium. I’m actually pretty good at getting them to grow roots profusely. Problem is I cannot do that with Phalaenopsis no matter what I do. I live in LA so my climate is a bit on the dry side. To counter this my setup and care is this. I put small pebble river rock on the bottom of the slotted cup. This helps keep them down during soaking and allows the bottom layer to remain dry because I had a lot of problems with root rot at the lower layer and it never drying. Than through the cup I mix sphagnum moss and orchiata bark. I usually water once a week heavily with half strength fertilizer (ie I let them soak a couple hours). By the way all the orchids have this setup except for the Vandas which are bare root and soaked two to three times a day. Because my climate is dry and my media dries fast the top of the orchid media gets misted about every other day (without that I found the upper roots would dry out). I get plentiful root growth and new stalks on all my orchids except phals. They just deteriorate and become more and more limp over time. Hoping you have some ideas or that this could inspire a video for “phals in a dry climate care”. Thanks. By the way, all except Miltionopsis but I’ve heard they are a pain for everybody. Lol

Thank you for this video. It has answered the question about when to cut flower spike. However, I have a question. I cut a flower spike in order to allow the plant to concentrate on its growth stage. I wanted the roots to grow, and the leaves to grow. I have just noticed it’s growing a new flower spike again. From your video it says it’s not good for an orchid to repeatedly produce flower spikes so. What do I do? What is your recommendation ? And finally, I heard that you were starting a question and answer forum how can I get in on that?

To induce the growth of flower spikes on phals, find a place in your home where the temperature is lower than your usual "ambient" temperature for several weeks. A temperature drop at nighttime can be sufficient. So, maybe you have access to a cooler stairwell or a generally not heated room, or the temp in your bedroom is lower than in your livingroom. Or, during spring, summer, autumn, your plants can stay outdoors but still as per their needs (light but no direct sun, never any temps below 10 deg C / 50 deg F), meaning during spring and autumn a stay outdoors during daytime and during the summer months during nighttime. Bear in mind that some phals bloom more towards winter&spring, whilst others may bloom towards summer&autumn, and even though you may have successfully induced the growth of a flower stalk, a bloom may be held off until the right time. And remember to (very lightly) fertilise your plant as per the instruction on the packaging of an appropriate orchid fertiliser so it actually has enough strength to grow and maintain its buds. I hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Do I need to cut one? Or are they ok to have as many as they grow? Three of my orchids bloomed twice in less than a year. I didn't do anything to encourage it. Should moss be placed on top of the orchid potting soil? I received two as a gift a few years ago, and just had to repot them. I notice that I don’t see moss on yours. Thank you.

Do you have any suggestion for a very fragrant beginner friendly lower humidity orchid? I know I’m asking a lot but I would like to try growing an orchid. Thank you ❄️💚🙃

How would you go obout phal. 'Liodoro' flower spikes? They seem to never dry out. I get secondary branches but the old ones get new buds as well, it seems. But it is more like few flowers at once, not more (one of my plants is like that already all year). In a way i like it because then there is almost all the time some smell (which is adorable!).

In may, I will be away from home for 13 days and I’d rather not have anyone water them. Can I leave 1/2 inch of water at the bottom of the decorative pot to keep them hydrated

I have an orchid that is in bloom; however, within a day, the blooms drooped and fell off. The stem appears healthy and is a vibrant pick color and subtle. The question I have is, do I have to cut the stem to promote new growth or will this orchid find a way to bloom again>?

Danny I bought an orchid last year and it had 2 long beautiful spikes with many many impressive flowers. This year only one stake and it barely grew more than 4 inches and only has about five flowers. What did I do wrong? Too much light? Little to no fertilizing? Could these be the culprit?

I have a stunning orchid with multiple flower spikes on the same branch but the plant itself looks like its suffering.. It has healthy roots and the flowers are incredible but some lower leaves are going yellow.. Can blooming take too much energy to sustain the whole plant?

I had two spikes when the blooming was complete. I clipped them. Now they are brown..and don't look like yours. Should I clip that dark part off.

Hi Dani, I was given a dead orchid to try to revive. The mother was gone😑, but she had a keiki on each flower spike. The spikes were dead as well and poor babies severely dehydrated. I misted them daily fir a week, then I potted them and continued to water a little each day. They are getting more and more hydrated, but I noticed that where the roots joined the stem( oh yeah each had 4 roots) is dried, but the tips of the roots are green. Should I just continue as I am or is there something else I could be doing. Thanks

I don't know if you still read your comments, but I wanted to tell you that I almost killed one of my orchids when I watered it with African violet food. By accident. I had both bottles of the food, which were similar in color, in the same place, and I didn't realize the mistake till I had watered all my orchids and nearly killed most of them. Can you tell me what to do if I should make the same mistake in the future?

Hi, it’s quite strange that an African Violet fert would do that, since they have very similar nutrient quantity needs. I’m thinking it might have been either an organic fert containing urea, which is organic.. or a synthetic one using urea as a nitrogen source. Can’t really think of any other reason other than maybe it’s expired? Any way, if you ever have issues with something similar, flushing the pots with plain water can help as it will remove most of the fertiliser in the potting mix. Hope this helps! :)

I was repotting my orchids and SADLY I broke a brand new spike of about 3 inches in hight. My orchids ALWAYS reward me each springtime. I am devastated. I have a spike of about one inch. What can I do? If I cut it just after the nodule will it shoot another spike or have I lost it flowering this year?

My Phal has sent out a bizarre flower spike. It comes out from below all of the aerials where I can't even see and extends horizontally instead of vertically. Typically she blooms two times a year. I have not changed location or light. The first flower on the spike is not fully formed, missing the peddles, but all other flowers on the spike are fully formed. Any ideas about what she is up to?

What causes the leaves to turn yellow? I cut them off near base when they turn brown. Instructions on orchid said 3 ice cubes once per week.?? I have my in indirect light near a window. Never in direct sunlight. I do have 3 on one stem and 2 on the other stem with bud nodes I did cut back on the main stem when it lost color and looked to be drying out.

They really don’t like cold. Warm water right on the surface. Don’t get the leaves/crown wet.
