Don Coscarelli's Phantasm (1979) is an amazing feature film debut and a firm reminder of just how magical '70s horror cinema could be.
The film is a tapestry woven of nightmares, a dark and foreboding place where logic has no sway as Mike (Michael Baldwin, his brother Jody (Bill Thornbury), and their pal Reggie (Reggie Bannister) try to stay a step ahead of the villainous Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).
Featuring an evocative score, striking visuals, and enough weirdness to to keep you guessing until the very end, this one earns every bit of its cult classic reputation.

I saw a trailer for Phantasm at the drive-in (I was four at the time), and had nightmares about the drill-balls until I finally saw the film 10 years later...my English teacher, Mr. Jones, said it was his favorite movie, alongside Robocop...this video reminds of great times in my youth, discussing the non-linear story for Phantasm and why it seemed disjointed...I read that the original cut was around three hours long...the exploding funeral home scene in Phantasm II is one of my all time favorite shots in any film...Scrimm had nerves of steel!
@TheHorrorGeek
@TheHorrorGeek 4 жыл бұрын
@@stinkypinkeee5085 I've heard about the original cut being 3 hours. I'd kinda like to see it, honestly. I remember seeing the balls for the first time at a young age (although definitely not 4) and being fascinated by them. Jaws was the film that terrified me at 4. I'd look at the book cover and soundtrack cover but I was scared to death of the shark. My parents said that I wouldn't even listen to the shark theme. :p Funniest part is, Jaws is basically my all-time favorite movie now. :-)

@@TheHorrorGeek The book "Jaws" was intense...the finalé is different from the movie, and would have been a better ending, IMHO...but, it was the 70's, so explosions must happen, according to my Pops...I swear, this channel REALLY makes me miss my Tall Man (Dad)...
@TheHorrorGeek

@@stinkypinkeee5085 Yeah, I really love the ending of the book. I mean Spielberg gave us spectacle and all that, but the book ending always felt more visceral and real to me. Sorry to make you miss your dad. This is the downside of my channel for me a lot of days. I go back to stuff I loved when I was younger and life was better. My dad introduced me to this series when VHS rental stores were still alive and well. I never caught the Third installment, and from what I remember reading it sounded like their plans on where the series was going was going to be EPIC. I swear if I ever get rich I'm doing everything I can to get these films reproduced into something that can do them justice properly. This film series would blow Stranger Things out of the water if more people would just give it a chance.

Despite "Phantasm II" actually being my personal favorite in the series, the first Phantasm is an absolute classic! A very original concept. Creepy atmosphere and sick score. Tall man becoming one of the best horror icons up there with Michael, Freddy, and Jason; and Reggie Bannister would later throughout the series go on to be one of my top 5 horror movie "final guys" up with Ash Williams (Evil dead), Tommy Jarvis (Friday the 13th part 4-6), Jesse Walsh (A nightmare on Elm street 2: Freddy's revenge), and Andy Barcley (Child's play series). Whoever said that guys can't be good screamers too? The Phantasm series has had a good five movie run. If they were to make one more entry like a Phantasm 6 or a reboot/remake, sure I'd be down for one.

I have to rewatch Phantasm 2. I remember absolutely hating it when it was in the theaters. I could've had my hopes up way too high or had some specific thing I was hoping for because it was my favourite movie in those days I think. I always thought the second Nightmare movie was great too. Nice to see that final guy getting some credit. Roger Avary apparently had a pHantasm script that never got made that I was once looking forward to. I think maybe the next Phantasm movie should really be outside of the talent already there. Another mind should be at the helm. Maybe this is wrong but generations have now grown up with the movie and someone will do a continuation or some sort or reboot with artistic intentions. I'd nominate the director of Mandy for the imaginary reboot.

Phantasm is one of my favorite horror films of all time. Coscarelli did a great job & I love how the cast pretty much keeps coming back for every sequel. Angus Scrimm is great in this role. Another great Coscarelli is "John Dies at the End". Also the opening "suicide" scene, maybe it just me but if the lady I'm doing turns into Angus. Ahh, good ol' Phantasm. The first movie that comes to mind when I think of badass low budget horror. Raise a glass to the late Angus Scrimm... what a beast. The sequels may have diminishing returns, but they do have a quadruple-barreled shotgun... so... definitely not all bad. Ever wonder if Timothy Balme got his inspiration for flinging the mutant rat monkey around from the fly scene in Phantasm? Oh, and "But has to hide when Torgo shows up!" LOL. I love a good Manos reference. Actually, you had a ton of lines that were just cracking me up this time around. Ah, this is one the films from 1979, known as Hollywood's scary summer. We got Prophecy, Alien, Dawn of the Dead, Nightwing, and of course, Phantasm. I'm happy to say I saw every one these in the theater. It's interesting to note these are all very different films, yet most are now considered classics. This is one of them. Its creepy, dreamlike atmosphere has never been duplicated. I'm a fan of the whole series, and I might like the second one best. I also saw that in the theater, but the rest on video or streaming because I don't think they were released theatrically. And you're right about the music; I bought the soundtrack for it too. Props to the late Angus Scrimm, who's one pf the creepiest horror icons of all time. You've got balls to review this one... BOY! Always one of my favourite horror films... :-) It absolutely scared the crap out of a friend of mine who had been raised a Catholic, when we went to see it when it first came out, and claimed it was as evil as The Exorcist! Loved the sequels too, even though they never had quite same unhinged nature of the first!

when I was 13 somehow I convinced my family to watch Phantasm. We rented a video player in those days I think. Anyway, my grandfather and grandmother from Ukraine saw the movie. They never saw anything like that before. They started life off when there were no cars and ended it watching Phantasm! I'm just kidding. Tehy didn't die but I looked at them and they were in total terror. My grandfather was clutching the chair the whole time. It must've looked like wizardry to them. They never saw anything like that before. Tehy knew it was all in fun though. Did your friend think the movie itself was evil and had to be avoided? I think the exorcist is kind of faith affirming in its odd way. That was the theme of it. The atheistic priest got his faith back through the Excorcism.

I recently stumbled upon your channel here and gotta say im digging all of this you got here, sir! So, ive been going back through all your reviews, bit by bit. I happened to just sit through a Phantasm marathon this weekend to try to get my kids on board with it ( always been partial to this series ever since i was kid myself). The original here kinda blew right past them but they were totally sucked in for the 1st sequel. Ill be honest: i saw the first film here probably 25 years ago initially and I STILL cant tell you what the hell is going on exactly! Whatever it is, I love it though! Great review sir!

Glad you stumbled on the channel! I couldn't begin to tell you what this series is about either, other than maybe it's a treatise on intergalactic slave labor. Regardless, I love the first two films to death, It's a big downhill from there, though. I think part 2 is probably the most accessible, but there's just something about the first film and how weird and dreamlike it is that gets me every time. thanks for watching and commenting!

I ADORE the Phantasm series! You're right about the gore. If you're wanting to puke, this isn't the place to be. But for pure weirdness and story, the series as a whole is pretty awesome! What I liked about it was the fact that every sequel seemed to add a little more to the story. You still got plenty of jawas, shotgun blasts, Cuda racing, zombie deaths, and Death Sphere action. But every one gave you a little bit more of a larger story. I've never really been able to piece together how much Coscarelli had planned from the beginning. Or if with every sequel, he had thought up more of a larger plot. But one definitely leads into another. And they always leave you with a big cliffhanger to keep you hoping for the next one. One is good. It's very phantasmagorical. A trippy movie kind of for the sake of being trippy. But cool. Two is my favorite. It's full of butt-kicking action and it definitely is one of the quintessential 80's movies. Psychic teens meeting across time and space joining together to fight an evil madman from another dimension who is hellbent on turning out planet into a wasteland and it's inhabitants into jawa zombies to serve as cannon fodder on his own plane. 3 was pretty cool. It focused more on zombies and had way more action than the others. The plot twists were pretty wild, too! You don't expect that kind of stuff in a horror franchise. Four was a good set-up movie, although it broke my heart it took SOOOOOO long to get to five, considering the huge cliffhanger we're left on. We also got to see how One was originally supposed to play out with all of the deleted scenes they incorporated into the movie. Five was not bad for coming so far along after the other movies. It maybe asked more questions than it answered, but it had some great moments. I wasn't a fan of the ambiguous ending, but considering Angus is dead and it would be kind of weird to try to fill his shoes with someone else, I get it. I think it might have gotten a little off track because of all the time passing and the interest in the Mandela Effect at the time. Honestly, I preferred the idea of other dimensions but them being completely different rather than the parallel almost identical dimension theory. But, it was good, especially for the fact it had very little budget. And I wouldn't mind seeing Coscarelli get another one out there sans the Tall Man. It's one of those things where you crave an ending and yet don't really want to see it end.

This is what’s interesting about Phantasm to me. It feels like he knew where things were going from the start rather than the typical sequel strategy if trying to retcon things in later that don’t really fit.

Saw this under the title "The Never Dead" on VHS in the early 90's, having seen Phantasm II on HBO the year before but not realizing the connection until part way through. It's a whacky late 70's indie with horror/sci-fi touches more than a straight ahead horror flick, but is one the few films to genuinely evoke the shifting chaos-logic of a dream.

This franchise is a bizarre one for me. We had the 2nd one for the longest time and we eventually got this one. This one really freaked me out as it started the whole dream within a dream long before Inception was an idea. We eventually rented up to 5 before my dad passed and I watched the rest of them simply because I wanted to see where it would go. Most of them are way better than what comes out in theatres today. They don't make em like this anymore.

One of my favorite flicks!!!!! It's like stepping into a Clive Barker microcosm and dealing with a scenario from a Creepy or an Eerie comic book while feeling powerless against things beyond your control like you are caught inside someone else's nightmare. To hell with the sequels, I want to see the full three hour version with everything that was cut from the original film! I think the movie plays out like a fever dream and it's a wonderful flick for a night with the guys... ...Or perhaps a safe third date with an open-minded, fun-loving female. (Won't wreck your chances and won't make her think you are secretly psychotic. Will just assure her that you hate insects in the kitchen as much as everyone else.) Great review! ☆☆☆☆☆ I believe that A Nightmare On Elm Street was borne from watching this film. Homage, I suppose, but I could write a term paper of how Phantasm was as influential to horror in cinema as Forbidden Planet was to science fiction in film. I agree. Hellraiser is equally-wonderful to watch, but much, much more gory. (Only use as a third date flick if she's goth and into S&M.) Best to you-

Phantasm will always be one of my favorite horror franchises. I discovered the first movie by accident when I was 11 when I bought the VHS at a store for a cheap price. My 11 year old mind was blown by it and I fell in love with it. Shortly after that I rented the sequels up to that point (2 and 3). Its a damn entertaining series of movies. I always viewed Reggie as a kind of Ash from Evil Dead like character, the unlikely hero. Years later my wife and I got into the Supernatural tv series and I swore that Eric Kripke took a lot of inspiration for Supernatural from the Phantasm series. Its a road movie where they're traveling in a bad classic car fighting monsters. Anyway, great review as always.
