I'm glad that someone came out with this. I've always wanted to make a kit from the compressor portion of a turbo kit but couldn't find a motor that is powerful or reliable enough to keep it spinning. Too bad this is only on demand and it not full time force induction.

Saw one of these on a BRZ today. A buddy of mine took a ride in it and said he could definitely feel the torque increase low-mid and midrange. His opinion was that its definitely a viable boost option for someone not looking for not a lot of boost and that its more of an every day useable mod. At the very least, it made the car feel like it should have out of the factory instead of what we actually got.

I had a thought (I am an apprentice mechanic so I do not know much but am applying some ideas and theory) Run a 180+amp alternator with a higher ampere and cca battery with a 250-300cca battery in series (Increasing amps but not voltage) with a switch to open or close the circuit in the interior of the car to activate or deacticate the electric supercharger. You could also run a split pipe, one end running through the supercharger and the other directly to the engine which they converge into one

Hey Steve, you mentioned having an aftermarket tablet install and that others were using aftermarket decks as well. I'm on the waiting list for the system, but as I'm currently doing a complete audio system overhaul, speakers, deck and amp + sub, I was wondering what your thoughts are on how it will work with the required battery setup. I could ask phantom themselves, but I know they're busy and don't always get back immediately so I thought I'd ask you as well. My biggest concern is the charge cycles they would go through. I would think constantly discharging and charging the batteries could wear them out faster than intended with all that draw on the electrical system.
@sojhinn9 жыл бұрын
Actually I just setup a complete audio system in the car with an amp and sub. Since the main battery is separate of the charge pack it doesn't effect the audio system. It's been working great. If you want message me on the forums (sojhinn) and I can help with the install or ideas.

ok. ive watched the entire vid. just to see if there was gonna be a tune for more fuel. and nope. just because u forced more air doesn't increase horsepower. the more air the more fuel. that is where u get more hp. i do like being able to run it without drawing power from the crank with a belt. parasitic loss. but just adding more air is not doing anything. but im just an ase certified tech. so dont take my advice.

the reason electric superchargers don't work is because generally it's just a fan that tries to blow air into the intake. The problem is they don't actually create pressure. Theoretically, if you have an actual turbo charger and use an electric motor to spool up the turbo you can get a device that's actually designed to create pressure to do its thing. that's the theory anyway
@ohiogeorgiangaming10167 жыл бұрын
andrewesquivel i dont look for the small remakes of turbos i usualy look for thin 5 hp preassure blowers that are electric and i have a feeling those would be better its a 400$ system still cheaper than a normal turbo but i never tried it. check out a Dayton high pressure blower

you would need a boost guage and see if it makes boost. Then you need an ECU that you can program for bost. Or stand alone ecu and laptop you can tune. The current ecu will not make the adjustments on it's own. Even if it only made 3lbs of boost. If you have the right fuel curve it would make optimal gains for that boost. I am wondering how many it would take in a line to make 15 lbs of boost lol. What does each one make? I guess it's possible if the intake is set up for boost. Check valves in place on PCV system so boost don't leak to the internal engine via valve covers. The intake has to hold pressure. Cap off the intake and pressurize it. Make sure it holds at least 1 minute. I could see how it might make 2-3 lbs. But can it keep up at high rpms? Normal turbo's speed up with exhaust speed. Super chargers speed up on RPM speed. These are just a constant flow. So boost will start high and taper off as rpm's go up. Might provide a little low and mid range improvement with an ecu mapped right and air tight intake system.

I do believe that that will create some boost however i didnt get to see the compressor wheel so i know if it does have the turbo ability because normal fan will not create boost. But even if it does create boost that doesnt mean its creating more power. Since that does not have an intercooler the heated air (because of compression) is not very efficient.
@TheHAMR11118 жыл бұрын
Plus that electric motor does not have the ability to spin the compressor wheel as fast as the exhaust gas can turn the turbine wheel

Wow, big flame war in the comments. I think everybody should be more open minded. Steve, not everybody understands new technology, and people with strong biases rather stay in the dark than learn about how the Phantom ESC works. I think the ESC has its advantages; its cheaper than super/turbo chargers, and it won't cause the heat issues of a turbo that is KNOWN to be a problem in these cars (see ft86club forums). Will it out-perform super/turbo chargers? Of course not, but that's not what this video is about. Steve was nice enough to make an installation video for those looking to buy the Phantom, but the internet trolls have come to flame him because saying "electric" and "supercharger" in the same sentence is a crime /s.

+geheimschriver Because physics doesn't allow for compressed air, okay.
@tomb98188 жыл бұрын
This might be a valid point if the electric turbo actually drew its power directly from the alternator - but that's not how it works. The turbo is powered from a separate battery bank that is trickle charged during normal driving, thus only sapping a negligible amount of power. Manufacturers don't use it because it is yet to be developed properly, and if you do some research you'll see that some manufacturers are already successfully trialling such technology. The Phantom electric supercharger is a proof of concept, really, and if you look into the results it does actually work very well for what it is. I am no physicist, but the evidence is there, and is says you are wrong. This shit works.
@tomb98188 жыл бұрын
Again, I don't know the math behind it, I just know that the evidence says the product works.
@atrippy51988 жыл бұрын
+geheimschriver Wow. There are pro and cons to all of these chargers kits (do not add the fan blowers that are advertised on eBay). The most major flaw of the esupercharger is that it can't run constantly because the reliant on the provided battery. It is an interesting setup and worth prototyping but its not for the feeble minded, eg geheimschriver. and people who think this is a turbo replacement. Cost wise it is great but I wouldn't take this over a turbo.

in fact it bothers passing air. why because the engine needs a lot more air. This blower bothered to properly set up the factory intake and a good passage of air. it has been proven that the transfer of the wheels gets less force for 6-8 hp. tested the car has 145 hp -148 on the first measurement. After installation, the second measuring car has 135 hp. at high engine speed 4500-5000 rpm power starts to fall because the car needs more air

I got a small old Fiesta with a 999cc 8v Zetec Rocam with small Eaton M24 blower. The stock engine produced 66hp @ 5800~6000 RPM with 87 octane gas on my first measures on dyno and after setup the blower, Mini MS1 ECU, changing fuel to ethanol and intercooler, I managed to extract the maximum power possible from that M24 Eaton the engine output was 114,8hp @ 7000 RPM with a boost around 0.63 bar (~9.13 psi). After some study on top of the ECU logs, we notice that the engine was actually producing 133hp. This means... a tiny M24 Eaton power consumption is around 18hp... this is around 13kW of power... If my power source to spin the blower was at 28volts, that would means at least 460 amps... which is quite unfeasible without thick wiring and really high standards electronics (usually too expensive for fun or hobby purposes). It would be possible to run the blower... maybe with a lower 'kv' (it's a RPM/volt constant commonly used on RC cars, planes, drones...) with a very high voltage pack could do the job. The most powerful electric RC plane motor that I saw was able produce 7 kW of power, which is not bad to begin with. I would like to know more technical stuff about it... Like... put the car on dyno with and without the electric blower... measure the current draw and voltage during a full boost. Right now, look like there are couple things that simple don't "click" right with this blower. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see a true functional "e-blower" working right in front of me with all the numbers and data proving that it is real. And I do a lot of search about better electric motors to do this kind of job... but so far, the only thing that I saw was big powerful fans that produce very little or next to zero boost when the engine reach higher revs. Anyway, what you feel after putting this blower on the car is very subjective and questionable. Show us more numbers and results, because people can't do anything when it about facts. ;D Thanks for the video!
@jontanneguy49608 жыл бұрын
+T “Sukyake Akido” Mathias You can try to compare kW consumed by the eaton supercharger vs an electric motor, but depending on the motor used, it is probably incomparable. One thing that needs to be mentioned is the parasitic losses from the belt and other attachments, as well as the parasitic loss at high rpm. The supercharger is designed to produce a certain flow at a certain RPM and, if a smaller pulley was used, more boost would be gained. So for electric motors, we must take into account the winding style, number of poles, wire gauge, and number of turns per stator (assuming this is a very efficient BLDC). A high voltage BLDC motor would be perfect; low amp draw, low heat, maximum efficiency. Consider the Turnigy RotoMax 150cc Size Brushless Outrunner Motor. The dimensions are 4.3" wide and 3.6" long. It would be nice to have the actual HP figures, but the HP on a 150cc gas engine could be quite high... the max RPM is probably around 8000 or so. Out of box this thing would probably have no problem turning the eaton supercharger; and with a gear drive system, it could probably make the desired boost pressure.
@BlackCatRedScarf8 жыл бұрын
+Jon Tanneguy Yep. I'm pretty sure the power loss due the belt is there, but looking into some Eaton data, in theory it should should be drawing 17hp at it's maximum boost (pressure ratio reaching 1.7) and maximum speed (18000 RPM ). It's probably higher due the very small pulley and the very well bended 6pk rubber belt, besides the fact that the blower is actually running a little bit... overspeed.. around 19000 RPM, but on the graphs... look like I could got even further on the maximum revs with this 1.0 Rocam (I used to run at 7500 RPM with a bigger pulley on the blower), but I choose to take it easy to ensure that the car could run safely during a 6 hours track day. But... yeah! A 8000 RPM electric with the proper transmission ratio could make a desire boost, but the only problem still... how to make a proper recharging system to feed a high voltage pack (I suppose, I'll be running a 74~96,2V LiPo or something close to that with LiFePO4) automatically? This will require a little bit more study time with electronics here for me. Besides that... I'm not really sure if the root blower would be really beneficial to the electric blower project, since... the good deal of root compressor is the fact it have a nice early boost at lower revs that keeps growing when it reach higher revs, but the efficiency still not so good as the centrifugal compressor and with a electric motor and seems to be quite easy to have a feedback system with a manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor to kill the "turbo lag". In other words, sustain a constant pressure or programmed pressure by RPM (and even throttle position) while the the compressor speed is controlled by the feedback system attached to the MAP... something similar to what is done on a ECU with boost controller trimming the turbo speed with the waste gate. At same time, a centrifugal compressor requires very high speeds (just to give an idea... something between 150k and 230k RPM depending on the design of compressor) to actually work, which can be quite tricky if you are going to need to put a gearbox with large ratios... I wonder if there is a nice high speed electric motor, just like the ones used on the EDF (electric ducted fan) planes that got enough power and speed to make efficient direct drive setup, just like the one shown in this video. And I still wonder how much power it's needed to create fairly high boosts (when the pressure ratio is around 2) for a 1 liter engine @ 7000 RPM... it's very curious information that I never found on the turbo charts, since they use the exhaust power (and creates a bit of back pressure... still not completely free energy! hahaha ;D) to work. This is why I'm interested on more numbers and concrete results from this phantom electric blower. :D Even if I don't know exactly what kind of compressor dimensions are being used, at least I could have few numbers to begin with. And... I don't plan to spend money without being really sure of what am I doing... you know... turbos, roots blowers, batteries and high power brushless motor setups are not exactly cheap and making new parts and designing, making new parts and adaptations requires a lot of time. In short terms, it's a project that requires cash and time. I already know what happens when you try to do something unusual but known on the car... it's already very demanding, but very rewarding when you manage to do it right. hahaha ;D But... it's very nice to see more people interested in a serious concept of the electric blower. It will be pretty cool when we have properly tested and functional electric blower that can be attached to any engine without any need to make major modifications on the engine... like... pulley and belt management of the blowers or the exhaust pipe, oil ducts and even water cooling modifications of the turbos.
@jontanneguy49608 жыл бұрын
For electric scavenging, the best thought is to use a set of super caps for quick drain/quick charge. Sustained boost for more than 10 seconds would probably be out of the question. One thing to look at on modern cars is the alternator. The ratio is about 3:1 so when your engine is spinning at 7k rpm you have an alternator with a decent sized iron core mass spinning at around 21k rpm. To reduce the alternator to a 1:1 ratio, thinner gauge wire should be used, and a more powerful bifilar wound magnet for the exciter. Multiple thinner gauge wire could be wound up in parallel to try and increase the output. However the wires need to be isolated by diodes and can't just be soldered together (just at one end). It's said an alternator consumes a considerable amount of horsepower and I'll believe it; especially at high RPM. 150k rpm for an electric motor is definitely possible. The best operating voltage would be around 5kv to 10kv and run at radio frequency. Special wire must be used to avoid arc over. The amps would also be very low so it should be extremely efficient. The pulse circuitry would be on the low end and then to a highly efficient transformer setup. Professor Gennady Markov has a nice patent on the type of transformer needed for such a setup. I wish I had the time and money to experiment!

Summit X The turbo wasnt added from factory. this is an 05 Mustang GT.with a 4.7L V8 modular 3 valve. mine made a little over 512 horsepower. and i was looking to add a little bit of other boost without cranking mine up to 36 PSI

hey steve, several of the guys from my forum are trying to get ahold of phantom with both phone calls and emails with no reply, how do we get ahold of them?
@sojhinn9 жыл бұрын
Best way to get a hold of him is through the ft85 forums. As a heads up there's about 40 people waiting for the system. So expect a 6-8 month wait time.

I have no comment on this unit because I am not familiar with it but I think it is funny how so many people in the comments think they know everything because they saw something on mighty cars mods. Actually Valeo I believe builds electric superchargers and they are being tested and may be released on 2016 Audio and Volvo is working with the technology as well. Is this unit the quality of the Valeo doubtful but remember that at one point in time people thought the earth was flat also.

trust me you're adding more weight than you can gain in power if that makes sense so basically you're making power to weight ratio worse by doing this.

I'm not sure there worth it because it looks great. Granted, but they cost 1800 dollars and that's about the same as a real turbo. Not sure if to get one plz help
@atrippy51988 жыл бұрын
+James Holland Once you go the turbo route, money just doesn't seem to keep falling out of your pocket. Fix this fix that and some odd reason the shop will always have you coming back to them for stuff. This kit doesn't run all day long so I wonder if you'll end up paying less money because it'll cause less strain on your engine.

Ok. Lets say this does work. Why cant it be done with the regular car battery. Now to me it looks like it does work but im sure its about half the power that you would get from a full on turbo system. But if it give you a minimum 15% hp increase than maybe it is worth it but only if this phantom system is less than $1000.
@firefox75309 жыл бұрын
Jose Olvera Does your car batterly deliver 28V? ;-) Ok, if you drive a Scania Truck with a 24V system then maybe but normal cars just deliver 12V. The electric motor needs a 24V system to run.... Audi actually uses in one of their studies a 48V system to drive an electric charger.... You can leave your starter Battery where it is and just find an other place for the 24V battery pack..... Of course you have to rewire everything.....
@robertmarkham65587 жыл бұрын
Isn't it plastic? can't someone put a stupidly powerful electric motor onto a normal turbo and just blank off the exhaust side and huck up a motor?

Julian Saiz that's the same fucking thing I was thinking lmao
@MsSomeonenew7 жыл бұрын
If the charger was fully off it would create intake restriction, so to at least keep up with engine air demand they have a vacuum tube so the electronics spool up that charger to not create drag.

Honestly a lot of people thought it was a joke at first. But there are about 50 of us running the system now, and they have been proven time and time again. Its hard to shake the skepticism but its the real deal.
