The stuff at the end was VERY historically accurate. The concubine pavilions were populated almost entirely by unmarried women, women who were exclusive to the emperor, and eunuchs, so nobody in them had ANY experience in bed outside of whenever the Emperor showed up. There are plenty of stories of emperors spending a lot of time at brothels because their concubines had no idea how to please a man.

But that's kind of small-brained, though?? Couldn't the emperor (since he has the money and power) invite over some prostitutes to teach his concubines how to do it? He gets a 3-way, and the wife learns some new tricks. It's a win-win.

One can not show their face, mouth, lips to the emperor when speaking. Nor can a commoner engage in direct eye contact. A lot of those traditions come from observing nature in the region. Predators in like bears and felines will consider eye contact as a sing of defiance, thus a person lower than the emperor was not allowed to engage in direct eye contact. However, more westernized/modern cultures that didn't necessarily grow with close relationships to predators and prey might consider avoidance of eye contact as a disrespectful action. As if the person is trying to hide their intentions.

The Emperor ordered Maomao to cure Lady Lihua in front of Lady Gyokuyou as a political move. It's been mentioned a couple of times now that Lady Gyokuyou is the emperor's current favored concubine. Especially since Gyokuyou's child is the only baby alive. Lady Lihua is also very sick and unable to serve the emperor with nightly duties. So obviously the entire rear palace and all political factions can feel that Lady Gyokuyou has monopoly of the emperor's affections right now. By appearing that he cares for Lady Lihua right in front of Lady Gyokuyou, the emperor is subtly giving Lady Gyokuyou a message that she is still a mere concubine, and the emperor has not decided to make her empress yet. "So stay in line, don't let the current situation rush to your head." Using Maomao, Lady Gyokuyou's servant, is also another political move. For sure, the emperor has other imperial doctors, and yet he chose someone from Lady Gyokuyou's faction to save her political rival. If Maomao succeeds, Lady Gyokuyou might be rewarded, but not much. But if Maomao fails, it could be spun that Lady Gyokuyou ordered Maomao to let Lady Lihua die. Thus, Lady Gyokuyou, her family, and her homeland/vassal state's power would suffer consequences.

only one thing, the inner palace had only one doctor bcz of lacking trustworthy doctors. There is a big spoiler here so I'll avoid talking about that but yeah, even if the emperor himself had other doctors(which isn't confirmed yet) the innerpalace never had that many doctors

Lady gyokuyou's child isnt the only one. There was one years before that, between Aho-duo and the other concubine that Maomao's father birthed. In the most recent epsiode it states that lady aho-duo's baby was switched at birth, and it gives the details of who it is. Maomao figrued it out at the end of the episode. ((edit, i read the manga and im not 100 % sure that jinshi was the switched baby but ik who he is))

Another reason is Lady Lihua is actually..SPOILERS Related to the emperor through Empress Dowager(I believe, need to recheck) meaning not only she's a cousin of his, and holds a strong noble blood/family connection her family also holds significant political influence in the empire and could rebel if anything happens to Lady Lihua whereas Lady Gyokuyou is hinted to be a consort of foreign blood(still noble blood but no strong connection to the country as hers is an important vassal crucial for trade) from a region located west of Li

this was clear in the moment he showed up. he told all the woman, that maumau is here on the emporers personal orders. so whatever she does, is in the emporers will. question is, if maumau realy knew that or if her morales let her act on reflex

@@pigcatapult I don't think she is humble but she knows VERY well what her place in the world is. whenever something catches her interest, she is prone to do almost anything to solve this, as long as she can get away with that. but she is also a good person. so in this moment, we have a maumau, who was already concerned about her own wellbeing because the other maids didn't let her do the job the emporer wanted her to do. now she has jinshi as support AND just found out what was happening here. striking down the lady in waiting here not only let her vent some steam, this also makes sure, that maumau has the best chance to survive this encounter, if the concubine would still die from the poisoning by making perfectly clear who was at vault and that maumau did everything in her power to prevent this

Not quite. You're right she enjoys her JOB as a food tester because she might get poisoned. However, she also does love good food on its own, because she doesn't get the chance in general.

I think it's a mix of both. The excitement of possible poison, but also the fact that she also gets the chance to eat the food of a high class concubine which she doesn't get the chance to otherwise as a perosn of low status originally.

I don't think the show is _that_ horny, sex is merely a part of every day life considering why the Emperor has gathered the concubines. Might as well treat it the same as eating and sleeping methinks. I dunno, to me how the show portrays the stuff is not exactly fan service-y, but to serve a purpose in the setting. If someone is horny, it's us :^)

@@VI_VA. Considering what was "ok" at the time, it really comes off as more playful teasing most of the time. Later on, he does something, that is very close to crossing a line, but I think that is less who he is and more an outburst, from a combination of several contributing factors, one of which being MaoMao basically mocking him, where it hurts the most.

I feel like it's worth adding that the Lihua we met at the beginning of the series likely wasn't the real Lihua. Not that it was a fake person but that heavy lead poisoning can cause extreme personality changes (including becoming paranoid and short tempered), much like Lihua did in episode 1. It's nice to see Lihua's true personality shine once those toxins are flushed out of her system

Exactly. Lihua was a sweet and gentle lady . And the chronic lead poisoning hampered her intelligence and perception, she was showing signs of paranoid delusion, saying things like " You are using black magic to harm my child " , " everyone is trying to kill my baby boy and me" , became super psychotic : yelling, hitting, throwing tantrums etc ... Heavy metal poisoning is known to cause such symptoms. Once she recovered , she reverted back to her own personality " Damn , y'all were right about the powder ; what was I thinking!" It was really sad to see women suffer because beauty was of utmost importance and they were suffering from insecurities.

Seriously though, Maomao has some serious strength. The force required to actually knock someone to the ground with a slap and to effortlessly drag a larger person than you by the hair is nothing to sneeze at. She's built different.

Considering she wasn't expecting a slap it would be easier to put her on the floor. Keep in mind she likely has spent years carrying a basket that she could fit into full of plants and it's unlikely she grew up without quite a bit of necessary strength building with apothecary work and working around the red light district would carry it's own necessaries

I wonder if the bit about the ladies-in-waiting using incense has anything to do with miasma theory, one of the pre-bacterial theories of illness that had to do with "bad air". Not sure if China had anything similar though, I'm only familiar with it as a European thing. EDIT: Looked it up, China absolutely had miasma theory. So yeah, that's probably why they thought the incense was important, common knowledge of the day would have been that "good air" and fragrances would have health benefits of some sort.

Concubine Lihua (Princess Blue when I can't remember her name) is voiced by Yui Ishikawa, the same VA behind Mikasa Ackerman and Violet Evergarden. This show spent some bucks on the cast and it's great!

I read an insightful comment somewhere that it was most likely arsenic not lead. Lead was supposedly used in victorian era face paints. But chinese face powders tended to contain arsenic instead.

Ordinarily I wouldn't like scenes like when Maomao drags the servant lady, because in fiction it's often used to show one female character is superior to an 'idiot, frivolous, feminine' one. But context truly helps. Maomao grew up in a brothel, she appreciates that sex workers have to survive, and are good at their job (and she appreciates beauty herself) so we know she isn't looking down on this woman for wanting Lihua to be _pretty_ so much as she is for knowingly _ignoring_ a health ban for the sake of it, and not even for herself, but poisoning someone else. It's still a _little_ 'I'm better than you' in terms of writing, since it is meant to be an admirable moment within the story. But the character herself probably isn't proud of it, and the fact she otherwise helps the ladies in their work and interests really helps. The ladies in waiting really didn't know how to care for a sick person. Maomao was a bit harsh. They're probably from aristocratic houses and wouldn't have a clue, but they want to help. (And Maomao responding appropriately to Jinshi's anime boy shenanigans will never not be hilarious.)

I think it's more like how Chef Ramsay goes ballistic whenever someone undercooks chicken because it could lead to hospitalizations and death. Because of her handmaidens ignorance Lihua is on her deathbed. While Lihua dying from her handmaidens ignorance is already a horrible outcome it doesn't stop there. If Lihua dies and it comes out that it was the handmaidens fault for using the banned powder the handmaiden will be executed. And since they've been ignoring Maomao but Maomao has been required by the Emperor to help, Maomao could also be executed. Not to mention all the other handmaiden would be punished or fired. So not only is it affecting Lihua's life which is bad enough but it's extremely bad for everyone involved not just Lihua. Maomao may have felt she overdid it in the moment but it was important to make everyone understand the seriousness of the situation. Possibly there was a less violent way to do it but really it was life or death for all of them

@@jonr3198 Certainly! I was just pointing out that often in the context of a story, such scenes are often used by the author to show why the scolding character is superior to the one being scolded. And sometimes it's actually unreasonable, and sometimes when the scolded character is more traditionally feminine than the protagonist it can come off as punishment for being flighty or whatever. Given this is about beauty and makeup it would be easy to write this scene in such a way, but the context saves it. We know Maomao doesn't look down on women who care about beauty and sex and stuff.

@KaiseaWings I don't think the show was trying to make the rude lady in waiting seem less than Moa Moa due to being supposedly more feminine (debatable because I do not consider Mao Mao less feminine than the lady in waiting) it is because she did something genuinely harmful and ignorant. But that ignorance in not because the lady in waiting is "feminine," but because of her role as lady Lihua's attendant and how her very existence is in serving her, making her happy, and presenting her in the best way possible because that the only role she has in her life. This series really accentuates the narrow restrictive existence the female occupants in the rear palace have (the eunuchs too really) that they would act in such a way because disregarding a health ban meant they could make their mistress stand among her competition.

@@Passions5555 Oh you misunderstand me, I mean that it's common for _other stories_ to put down traditionally feminine women in this way. Maomao is 'less feminine' in that she's not interested in romance, makeup, or clothes the way the other women in the story are. That makes her less traditional. Other stories sometimes have a non-traditional tough girl heroine look down on women who care about beauty, love and status. And scenes like this are used to show how stupid such things are. But this show is actually pretty careful about showing that such things _do_ matter, it's just that it doesn't matter to Maomao personally. Thus far it's been pretty sex positive, supportive of sex workers, and non-judgemental.

@14:20 if you notice, one of the "sisters" is flicking the nostrils on Maomoa's nose is also very suggestive, as if telling her "where". You can imagine how scandalous that would be for it to be said out loud, so Lihua has probably never had an open discussion with a stranger about those acts.

I can see you like the historical facts as well as the medicinal usage in this show. I would like to suggest the anime Arte. There is no medicinal usage in Arte, but the historical part of it is really good. The show is based on the 16th century arts, and the workers. And the main character, Arte, she wants to be a official painter. But during that time, that's a mans job. Its a fun and colourful show, with funny and serious moments.

You said there is no medication for sleep walkers, but i had clients who were prescribed diazepam and clonazepam. So the doctors would only a minister these drugs in the sleep lab alongside with counseling sections.

It helps you shit, it does this by helping to bundle waste together as it passes through the colon. A larger and more solid mass is easier for the colon muscles to squeeze out.

nice...I always have this difficulty of stomachache and constipation (i think that`s what it called) ever since kid till now...especially when I eat some sorts of peanuts and spicy things,it`s always cause me instantly goes to toilet...no one tell me about how good is dietary fibers.....I need to know...what good foods or drinks that give out useful dietary fiber?@@peggedyourdad9560

If you don't have proper bowel movements the waste will cause necrosis (death) to the large intestines. In modern medicine we can fix it with an ostomy bag but in ancient China...

She did fully envelop herself in a cloud of Lead poisoning powder, while she has build up resistances shes not immune so I wonder if she could have poisoned herself and the fool with her rant.

Nah the powder dosn´t contain enough lead to poisen someone that fast. if it were like that, the women who wore it over longer times would alread be dead. Luckely it isn´t like that and u had to be exposed to it over a prolonged period of time.

With fiber it helps the bowels with enough water to push out waste and toxins in your urine and poop. As the Lady was extremely sick, she naturally be dehydrated and it be a waste in her condition to make her waste what little energy she had left to chew on anything. The change from porridge to rice water must have helped a lot as that’s similar to how some procedures and food poisonings you may need to switch to a liquid diet to help expel things out. A common side effect of lead poisoning is abdominal pain and constipation. Had it continued she would never been able to have children again and other serious side effects and she already lost a baby to it similar to Victorian era children as some toys with very bright colors had lead or Arsenic in them.

Essentially our stomachs can't break down fibers into usable energy to absorb so it will pass through us. This might seem bad but we are actually meant to have some fibers in our diet and our digestion system is tuned around there being fibers in our food. After absorbing nutrients in the small intestine the stool is dried and hardened in the large intestine to prevent dehydration through diarea. If you don't have enough fiber the large intestine can be to effective at drying the stool and give you constipation. Fiber rich food is also good for you since it takes time for the stomach and small intestine to break it down. That makes you feel fuller and releases suger into the blood slower making it take longer for you to feel hungry again. Therefore fiber is good against: 1) constipation, 2) not feeling full even after eating, 3) Getting suger rush and then crash. In this episode it helped against constipation and potentially speed it up all the way to loose stomach to hasten the poison leaving the body.

fiber is not for the stomach, it helps the intestine push the crap out better.
