Hello! This week I decided to do a sit down video to give you advice about how to apply for a PhD, based on my own experience applying to LSE. I cover how to find the right university & supervisor, and what to consider when writing an application. I know it's a long one, but I hope you find it useful. Please ask questions in the comments!

Hey, Very informative and great video you have made. thank you doing that. Although I have a question for you? "Whatif someone got a bad graduation grade but had a good post graduation grade, both level of education is in Anthro and also wanna apply PhD in top institution will this can be possible with low grad grade ?

Hi Keshav. I'm glad you found it informative! I'm not sure but I would guess that the postgraduate grade would be more important for a PhD application. I would recommend that you email the department(s) you're interested in to ask. Best of luck!

Hey Zoe! This was a super helpful video and it's changed the way I'm thinking about the university/s I'm going to be applying for. I'd love to hear about/you to do a video about how you came up with your initial proposal. While I understand that it shifts and evolves as the PhD goes on, at the moment I'm struggling to find the specific question I want to start with, although I know exactly the field I want to study - education videos on youtube. But I have pages and pages of questions sorted into categories about the various aspects and while I'm interested in all of them, I can't find the Big one where I can start the actual PhD. Any tips?
@Zedstergal
@Zedstergal 5 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad you found it useful! There's a possibility that you're overthinking it a bit? The project really does change a lot during the first year. I think as long as you can position your topic of study within the existing literature and what your project is doing that's different then that's great. I don't know if you've looked at the work of my supervisor Sonia Livingstone, and also David Buckingham's work on critical digital literacy? Might be useful. Good luck!

Hi Zoe! Thanks for sharing this. It’s very helpful. I have a question about reference letters. If I were to apply for a PhD in several institutions at the same time, would it be fine to ask my former professors to provide several references for these programs? I wonder whether that’s appropriate to ask former professors to provide a reference again and again.
@Zedstergal
@Zedstergal 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you found it useful! Not 100% sure but I think that's completely normal. They'd probably just use the same reference repeatedly, assuming you're applying with the same PhD project everywhere.

Hi zoe. This video is very informative for me per se because i am planning to apply for a Phd from LSE( Deptt. of International Relations). Though i am very concerned and worried about the funding issues. Can you tell me more about Academic References and Example Essay. Also would you suggest me any funding agencies to apply and kindly tell me the process of doing it. Thank you i shall be grateful to you.
@Zedstergal
@Zedstergal 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vivek. I'm glad you found it helpful! In terms of funding, you should contact the Department Manager in the Department of International Relations and ask them about this, as it varies a lot. They will be able to give you a lot of help with this. You could also contact the PhD Academy at LSE, they will be able to give you additional support. Academic references should be written by two academics who have taught you previously (undergraduate or masters level most likely), and they should say why you're a good fit for the PhD. Similarly, the example essay should be from your previous study and show that you are able to write well, preferably in the field that you're going into (International Relations). But if you haven't studies it before, then another subject will have to suffice. You can find all of the specific information for what the Department of International Relations is looking for in PhD applications here: www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/Graduate/Degree-programmes-2019/MPhilPhD-International-Relations

Hi Zoe, thanks for the great video! I’m applying to LSE for PhD in the upcoming September. Can you please advise me on securing the funding? I felt like fair number of students have to pay their tuition and research fee for a PhD, which is completely different from the auto-funded NA institutions.
@Zedstergal
@Zedstergal 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kev, thanks! What department are you applying to? Most students in my department are funded, so so their tuition or maintenance is paid for. This is split between LSE studentships, research council funding, or funding from the student's home country. You should ask the departmental research manager what options are available in your department and see if there is any additional application needed, or if the PhD application is all you need to do. I wouldn't advise changing your project to try and fit with funders desires, unless they already do fit with your own interests, because you don't want to get stuck doing a PhD that isn't flexible to change with your interests.

Hey Zoe I am planning on applying to LSE this January for a PhD. However, I haven't finished my masters program yet which will be done in August. My question is should I still apply?
@Zedstergal
@Zedstergal 3 жыл бұрын
No, you'll have to have your MA in hand to start the PhD, and you'll probably have to have a confirmed distinction grade (or whatever the equivalent is where you are)!

@@Zedstergal So you applied to LSE for a PHD after your received you're masters or did you do it while finishing your masters?

@@Sardiatae I applied whilst I was doing the MA, but could only start the PhD once I had finished the MA and had my grades, which had to be high enough for LSE.
@temikeita
@temikeita 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sardiatae it's actually incorrect what Zoe said. It's fine to apply while doing a MA, but as Zoe said you do have to have achieved the grades required to actually start. It's a conditional acceptance, but it's very common to apply while during your MA and graduate programs expect this.
