Full highlights from the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay Final in which Michael Phelps win's his record breaking 19th Olympic Medal as the USA secure Gold at the Aquatics Centre in London.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

I was curious, so I did some digging. Phelps reaches a top speed of 15 MPH, about the average running speed.

I think people need to swimm competitively to understand how fast Olympic swimmers are! I swam in meets in souther and central California during high school and I was not fast, but the swimmers in heat 12(last) were swimming Olympic times (Olympic qualifying times not Olympic records) and it look like they were running on water. I was amazed how fast people can swimm.

Guys the first person from team USA was almost as fast. Check the swimmer wise splits -- 1:45.15, 1:85.23, 1:85.27, 1:44.05 So don't just say that Phelps did this. He got a big lead to start with. And yes, he is still one of the best Olympians ever and will always remain so.

MP's final 50 was amazing, Agnel closed to within 2.5 seconds but MP just rocketed out to 3 seconds. It's like an old-timer saying "sorry son, gotta go!" Phelps will always be the greatest.

What great turnovers by Lochte, in the 1st 50 he was hardly even breathing, & he left consistently breathing to the subsequent 50's. He ripped it & killed it so hard, it just goes to show how much more of a beast Phelps is compared to that rest

To even to participate in the Olympics is a huge achievement and then winning a gold is beyond words. He achieved that a record amount of times. It's the biggest achievement in mankind sports history and just the history of human endurance in general. Imagine being that person.

I love how unbiased the Aussie commentators are. Maybe it was a given that USA would win but if this was the BBC commentating, my goodness, they'd not shut up about Great Britain like in the Athletics Championships 2017 when in Bolt's last professional race, he pulled up injured and they shamelessly celebrated for 10 minutes because GB got Gold while a truly historical man's career ended in true sadness.

when Phelps was swimming i could relate you got to give it all at the moment... i believe swimming is one of the sports where you have to give the full of your capacity when you jump in water.. while its exhausting and gasping for breath.. you still have to give your complete self.. i was a university swimmer and i know the effort to put in.. on a Olympic stage.. these guys are phenomenal.. their bodies and practice etc are on a different level.. but one thing that swimmers are the most brutal in stamina.. i compare with many athletes but swimmers stamina is on next level on ground.. they have huge capacity lungs and muscles hardened like crazy..
