I met phil for the first time in the back parking lot of a club in nashville after I got kicked out of the show due to bleeding during haarp and before arson anthem, and I was drunk as a sailor. He was talking to the bass player for hank 3 at the time. I stumbled up to him and said "Phil, my favorite song of all time is 25 years". Then he started singing the song in front of me and then his body guard bandaged my head up and got me back in the show

I think I understand Phil better now. His tough-guy "I'll punch you" thing is really just his version of male-bonding. It's not meant to be taken literally. It's what he says to people he likes. If he doesn't like you and you piss him off, he won't be joking about it at all. You can tell that he's just being silly by how the interviewer responds so casually; they've likely had a private chat before the interview and the interviewer has read Phil and his mannerisms in the proper light. Cool.

Wow 😂 My Dad used to do that exact same thing and other stupid shit similar to that when I was sitting next to him, like randomly start making karate noises and start play fighting me or my brother out of nowhere hahah. I started working out religiously when I was in my teens and even in my mid 20s I never felt anywhere near as strong as he was. Hell, even a few months before cancer took him and he was just skin and bone, he could still squeeze my hand so hard it felt like he could break it. Power Metal and Cowboys from Hell are my favorite Pantera albums. Amazing how Phil's speaking voice is so low yet he did such high pitched vocals on those albums. Power Metal is underrated and I wish Phil would acknowledge it.

I think Reinventing reflects the band's closeness/ tightness while recording it. Trendkill was Pantera reaching the end of their "How heavy can we get?" journey and with nothing left to prove, they knew it was time to get back a bit more to where they came from. IMO, the songs felt fun & inspired again and the album features more of the old school, melodic and groovy Pantera that I loved so much. "Revolution" is like a medley of Pantera's range. From upbeat grooves to down and dirty chugs. Yeah, it sucks that they broke up after that but they left on a strong note and there's a completeness in the fact that they basically came full circle. Very few bands end on such a strong, final note.
@Apprentice_of_the_Leonine2 жыл бұрын
They also had a sort-of "10 years (more or less) on top and then suddenly gone" situation like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Made their mark and that was it, instead of slowly fading away for several decades afterward.

Why do people hate Phil so much? If it weren't for him Pantera would have remained a kind of heavy glam metal band. We never would have gotten Cowboys from Hell or any other kickass Pantera albums if not for Phil.
@p4fizzle9 жыл бұрын
Very true, I think it was Dime and Phil that really took Pantera to that Next Level
@Semperincalles9 жыл бұрын
Who hates?
@zumis10119 жыл бұрын
well, a lot of people blame him (somehwhat) for the death of Dimebag, including Dime's bro Vinny, the drummer. Long story short, Phil kickstarted his own band, Down, and told his band-mates he would return to make another album in about a year. He did not honor this agreement, and left his band hanging for (if I remember correctly) three years or so. Dimebag apparently became very depressed, and the remaining band-mates opted to quit, and form their own band, Damageplan. Unfortunately, someone in the audience at a show, most likely disgruntled about the break up of Pantera, shot Dimebag in the face, then immediately tried to hunt down Vinny. This is why many former fans don't like Phil, myself included, I don't know the guy, but his unapologetic attitude towards the break up of Pantera makes me think he's kind of an asshole. I don't hate him, but I will admit I do judge him a little disregarding his band.
@MetallicaKing489 жыл бұрын
That isn't because he was an asshole. He struggled with intense substance abuse and medical recovery for a part of those three years. Before you judge, please learn more facts instead of opinions. Thanks again.
