Phil and Chester are one of the best drum duos ever. They worked so well off of each other, but unfortunately they are also criminally underrated and never truly get the recognition they deserve. I have many Phil/Genesis songs to recommend with great drumming!

The remarkable thing about the duets these guys did over the years is that they are essentially songs. You can hear them using the different tones of the drums to create melody and harmony and it's truly amazing to behold.

Hey Jamal, Thanks for filling the request! I will keep it short... Chester Thompson joined Genesis after the exit of Peter Gabriel and just after Phil Collins started fronting the band with his vocals. Around late 1970, early 1980, Genesis needed an incredible second drummer to add to the complexity of the band and the live performances. The rest is history. Seen many amazing Genesis concerts since 1980. Keep spinning those tunes m-Man! B)
@stevedrums16754 жыл бұрын
there were so many great duets with Phil and Chester throughout the years. While I don't think this is the best one they've done, it does highlight just how in sync and in-tune these two were. Phil remains as painfully underrated a drummer as any in history. Phil's development of sound on the drum as a recorded medium cannot be understated. And his playing in the early days of 'progressive rock' make him an innovator and in his prime, nearly untouchable.
@joeday42934 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Not only did he inspired drummers throughout the 70s, but after "In The Air Tonight" came out, that's what drums sounded like on records for the next 10 to 15 years.
@stevedrums16754 жыл бұрын
@@joeday4293 : Yup. It started on one of Peter Gabriel's solo albums ("Intruder"). He developed the sound with Producer hugh Padgham (sp.). And with rare exception, most drums in popular music to that point sounded like they had towels on them and had this dead, dull, lifeless tone to them (like the Eagles records or the early Billy Joel records). Phil made recorded drums sound like live drums and make them more of a lead sounding instrument rather than just a time-keeping one.
@JasonLevine11784 жыл бұрын
Phil gets a lot of hate for his post-Genesis Disneyfication and also some less-than-stellar life choices but you are correct that in his youth he was easily one of the best drummers in the world.
@stevedrums16754 жыл бұрын
@@JasonLevine1178: Well, he shouldn't. All he did was grow and develop into a multi-faceted musician rather than just stay in one place like Dream Theater did as an example. Not everyone is going to zone out to "Supper's Ready" or even "Los Endos". But he found a perfect formula to meld his 'pop' and R&B roots into his own style and find an audience wide enough to support his solo work. Plus, by remaining in Genesis, he was also able to maintain his rock cred. As far as his life choices go, I could care less about them. He didn't kill anyone or hurt anyone other than himself and maybe an ex-wife or two. I'm not a listener to be his buddy. I'm a listener because I adore what he does or did.

The story on how Chester Thompson joined Genesis begins in 1976 after Genesis wrapped up their "A trick of the tail" tour where they had the mighty Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes) on drums and although the band and Bruford got along really well and he fit right in, the fact that he was to play Collins' drum parts and JUST Collins' drum parts and not put his own spin on them was weighing heavy on Bruford, so after the final show, he was out. So the band reconvened on what to do at which it was brought up that they should have an studio guy, a session player whom you could tell "Here are the tracks, learn them." And Collins remembered seeing the Fusion band Weather Report and Chester was their drummer at the time and he went "I think I know who we can ask." So Chester was brought in, the band started rehearsing for their "Wind and Wuthering" tour and Chester was going "Man you guys are BAD!" which of course meant that he enjoyed playing with them very much but the band, being English didn't understand his use of slang, so they were Worried that Thompson didn't like the music since it was "Bad." Chester later said that Phil taught him how to play the "Ringo Shuffle" and in turn he taught Phil how to play the "Philly Swing."
