Hearing Phil play the drums for the old Genesis songs is truly magical. He probably wouldn't have played The Musical Box in it's entirety since 1982 for the Six Of The Best reunion show

Phil was never the stuck up perfectioninst that so many would have you believe, he was just so good at what he did and he cared alot about the way things sounded. A true all around class-act. He never sold his soul for fame... but he did give his heart away to all who needed it... we will miss you Phil. Thank you.

Collins is probably the greatest living drummer. This is all opinion, of course. Phil has great technique, but that's not what makes him the best. Simply put, he brings a musical "voice" to the drums that is absolutely breathtaking. If you are a drummer, or have any friends that are drummers and play this for them, I urge you to check out the studio version of "Cinema Show." He brings such beauty to the song, very light shuffling, incredible control/constraint, and then those fills in an absolute flash. My dad, himself a fine drummer, argued with me for months about that song:"Son, that's two Gdmn drummers!!!" Thirty-odd years later, he still thinks Collins is one of the greatest of all time.

Always liked his drumming. When he hits the skins on that stage next to Bruford in the 75 film, you hear that it's him without having to look. Brand X was a great showcase for his drumming.

I really love how Phil hit this delayed accent at 1:25 out of his memory, because they played it this way in 1992. The original version doesn't have this musical hit, that's why the musical box never played it.

How can he still have the same voice he had when he was 20? So beautiful... One of the many, many reasons why I adore The Musical Box (the song) is because of Phil's vocals, while playing. I'm just drooling here...

The original is sung by Peter Gabriel. Both vocalists have similar voices, so I get the confusion.
@semajttam

Phil didn't have the rasp in his voice he developed about the time of Duke, hence why his own live shows and that of Genesis have songs with the keys dropped down a little. Whereas this delicate gentle voice is easier to recreate even 29 years later.

+Brian Peters - I read an interview with Phil in which he said he wasn't happy with his performance here - he said it was entirely his own fault because he thought he could get away without really rehearsing it and just getting up there. Odds-on the bits cut out are the mistakes he says he made...

And as a drummer, it's so difficult to simply get up on someone else's kit. It's such a personal thing and affects so many other things. I do know, the one thing Phil insisted on was his own pedal.

How good of a guy is Phil Collins? I mean, for one, he is so good spirited about Martin and his group playing all of his songs AND he’s a good sport and agrees to go up and play drums on the Musical Box. It is baffles me that this multi millionaire mega star is so chill and so cool that he’s like, “hell yeah I’ll go up there and play with you guys”.

This is great to see Phil drumming. Although ages ago and an early Genesis song at that, something that the band would never play now (or at that time when Phil was still drumming.) These little tidbits are all we can live for to see now. Or find Steve's Genesis Revisited concerts. No one can drum like Phil in my eyes. A genius.

I agree with you that after Hackett left, they took a complete turn into pop-world. Yet there are some great underrated songs that take then right back to the 70s. I wouldn't say "mama", but I would the Duke medley, Domino medley, as well as many of the songs that Banks/Rutherford did in Calling all Stations. Phil's voice would have sounded great on that particular cd. I'm still hoping to have Gabriel and Hackett make an album with the other three guys - now past 36 years ago.could you imagine?

@jmellopinheiro I can partially agree on that. I think they made the big step into pop land after "Duke". ATTWT and Duke are mostly prog, but have some pop-tunes on Duke ("Misunderstanding, Turn It On Again), and on ...And Then There Were Three:("Follow You, Follow Me"), but those songs aren't that bad. ATTWT is one of my favourite albums by Genesis. I can also agree that after Duke, they became almost like Phil's backing band. like Abacab and some songs of the later period, like Brazilian.
