Welcome to Phil Collins appreciation week here on Listography. Despite Kramzer's ghoulish album ratings, we've decided to let him participate in this top 10 Phil Collins songs video.
One of the most popular solo artists of our time, Phil Collins had 7 songs hit #1 on the Billboard charts (Sussidio, Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now), One More Night, Another Day in Paradise, Two Hearts, Separate Lives, Groovy Kind of Love), 14 top 10s and 27 total.
He had the most top 40 hits in the 1980s of any artist.
And you dare criticize his albums?

I can’t believe I watched 50 minutes of Phil Collins album reviews, but it was entertaining. “Against All Odds” still gets the dramatic win for me. Totally forgot about The Postal Service cover. The only album anybody needs is Serious Hits… Live! 😁 Cheers, fellas! ✌🏻

The ricochet synth sound on that track really is bad ass.

You can tell I prefer the early stuff: 10 - Take me home 9 - Don't let him steal your heart away 8 - Hand in Hand 7 - If leaving me is easy 6 - You know what I mean 5 - Do you know, do you care? 4 - Against all Odds 3 - The Roof is Leaking 2 - In the Air Tonight 1 - Like China Didn't think to consider Easy Lover (a UK number 1) but I think it would have made about number 8. I still have the Philip Bailey album on vinyl from whence it came, which I believe I bought just before Easy Lover was released.

Great worst to best albums list yesterday & my top 10 PC songs are... 10 - I'm Not Moving 9 - We Fly So Close 8 - Don't Let Him Steal Your Hear Away 7 - There's A Place For Us 6 - Thunder & Lightning 5 - In The Air Tonight (Single Mix) 4 - Take Me With You 3 - Inside Out 2 - I Don't Care Anymore 1 - Do You Know, Do You Care... Phil isn't everyone's cup of tea but in my book the man is a total legend!

One More Night's a sweet song. It's got the simple kind of style as a lullabye. Soothing but I feel emotion there too. Another song in that laid back but still melodic style, and also from that time, is maybe Dire Straits - So Far Away.

I think the differences in your lists is a testament to the fact that Phil means different things for different people...and yet there are certain songs we can all somewhat agree on. I’d like to thank Joe personally, for saving this one by not only putting Against All Odds at the top of his list .. but also, by namechecking Peter Cetera, and Glory of Love!! Still my favorite love song, of the ‘80s and in fact was my favorite 45 when growing up as a kid!! So, thanks Joe.

"Separate Lives" was the sacrifice hit Phil made just so people would feel cooler about liking "Against All Odds." So they can tell hipper friends 'I'm not that soft that I like SL, but AAO is okay.'

I Don't Care Anymore 10. I'm Not Moving Honorable mention/Guilty pleasure: I've always really liked 'Seperate Lives', with Marilyn Martin, a lot. I like the movie it came from too. Also, lest we forget, Phil was a terrific session drummer once upon a time.. He even played on some of my hero Brian Eno's early solo albums, namely "Another Green World", "Before And After Science", and "Music For Films". I've enjoyed this week, revisiting these old albums (well, the first 3, anyway, which are all great). Thanks!!

I too have been surprised by how much I like the first two albums after not listening to them for decades. He's an outstanding drummer but also has a knack for writing great melodies.

Listo should go back to the 60s again and review the best singles of popular band or even obscure songs or Psychedelia Nuggets. Maybe revist or review Smokey Robinson; if you can tolerate Gene Pitney's voice he wrote and sang many good songs; The Temptations, The Animals top 10, and the best of Mary Wells (I know noone will know of her so you need to play her songs) who sang songs written for her by Smokey Robinson so with a love like that you know she can't be bad.

I give Phil credit for Producing & playing drums on a wicked Frida track " There's Something Going On " that was pure 80's pop perfection. Russ Ballard ✍ it but Frida & Phil own it. I guess I'm cheating 🤷

Good on you for mentioning Russ Ballard but he deserves a bit more than a hand and a pen symbol. The man is a genius, many of his songs giving hits to many established artists(Santana, Rainbow, Roger Daltrey, Kiss, America, Elkie Brooks, Hot Chocolate , Frida, Agnetha Faltskog etc. etc.) through the years. One of the greatest singer songwriters that nobody seems to be aware of. Not only that but also a fantastic live performer.

@@jesuschambers He wrote most songs for Argent (Rod Argent's post-Zombies band) and they were covered by e.g. Kiss or Jason's favourites Three Dog Night. I have to admit that I even listened to some of his 70s solo albums - it is clear why he wrote so many hits...Generic is his middle name, he writes stuff that fits for everyone.

@@roxannewalshYes, I'm a big fan of his work. The brilliant track: Voices, was also featured in an episode of Miami Vice. Saw him and his band live about 5 years ago and he did a medley of some of his songs made famous by others(Great stuff!). Fun fact: We share the same birthday but 12 years apart.

My favorite think of more later 1. Against All Odds (excellent power ballad displaying a surprising range of emotion grounded in an old timey style long past by rich with reminiscence and wide dynamic range) one of the only eighties power ballads for movies that stands the test of time in my mind. 2. You Can't Hurry Love one of the best Motown remakes I have heard, though I love the original, really like the video too 3. Another Day In Paradise 4. In the Air Tonight 5. I Wish It Would Rain . Including Phil Collins vocal songs for Genesis around the same time in the 80s: Turn It On, That's All, Home By the Sea, Takin it all Too Hard, Mama, and Just a Job to finish out the top 10 or I guess that makes 11

I love these channels. I liked Phil Collins' hit singles, but I wasn't too familiar with his work. I'm a little surprised (TBH) that his solo songs are still being played on the radio. I remember that did a lot of early Disney stuff in the early 2000s. He was hitting his "legend" status at that time. I preferred Peter Gabriel's first two solo albums. They were really good + experimental for their time. I remember that when I worked at a sports marketing office, my manager said the same thing about preferring Peter Gabriel over Phil Collins. It was a good time! I'll have to check out his full list of albums. Overall, I think it's great that Phil Collins expanded his musical offerings toward dance and electronic sound for the 80s! Good discussion. (TRUST ME- THE COMMENTARY BELOW, YOU'LL GET ADDICTED TO THESE CHANNELS! They're really fun).

Thank you for mentioning that Phil is an underrated singer. I always thought he was a terrific singer. Though he had to take steroids a lot before concerts to avoid cancelling because of throat problems. My favorite Phil song is "Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away" at the moment.

Yes! Love for "I'm Not Moving"! ... As an active radio listener between 1981-85, my theory is Phil Collins wasn't overplayed until "Easy Lover". It ruined my enjoyment of the song. Inside Out is an instant portal for me back to 1985 and me learning the whole album on my drums that summer. Phil Collins IS a major piece of the soundtrack of my youth. 1982-94. Hands down.

My list comes entirely from the first three albums, and while I have mixed feelings about No Jacket Required (what would it sound like with production that sounds more like his first two albums?) those first two albums are aces in my book. Good songs and great playing. He's so smooth on the drums, especially on those numbers with the Phenix Horns. Never overplays, just serves the song but still demonstrates his chops. So sad that he can't play anymore. This listen through his first three albums reminded me of what a great drummer he was and how he could really work a groove. My favorite songs: HM: The Roof is Leaking, If Leaving Me is Easy, Inside Out, Like China, Sussudio, Easy Lover, (No Reply at All and Paperlate, which are both Genesis songs but clearly could have fit on either of his first two albums--I'm cheating, I know). 10. It Don't Matter To Me 9. Only You Know and I Know 8. Droned/Hand in Hand (they run into one another and seem of a piece to me, so I count them as one song--cheating again, I know, but I like 'em both) 7. This Must Be Love 6. I Don't Care Anymore 5. Take Me Home 4. Behind the Lines 3. In the Air Tonight 2. I'm Not Moving 1. I Missed Again (can we get a shout out for the Phenix Horns as backup singers too? Hot damn! They were on fire.)

My problem w/Phil Collins is similar to my problem w/The Rolling Stones. I think Phil Collins makes some really great songs but, his albums, not so much. I still own a copy of No Jacket Required but I don't listen to it often because I like less than half the songs. I also had Face Value but, I traded it for the same reason. Dudes... Check out the movie Adventures of Power for the best use of the song In the Air Tonight in a film. Rush fans should also check it out, as it has a guest appearance by Neil Peart. The movie is a comedy about an air drummer who loves 80s melodic rock. Sounds dorky, and it is, but it's also really great! You can find it on youtube, and I'm pretty sure it's still up on netflix.

The Supremes weren't always good. Some songs suited them like Baby Love (lighter, smooth), others are overrated or just didn't reach their potential. Phil puts so much more energy into You Can't Hurry Love that he takes it to another level.

I'm not a Phil Collins solo guy at all. But I have always loved A Groovy Kind of Love. Cheesy garbage but the melody is super-memorable and it's really nostalgic from my childhood.

Years ago, I would've definitely had "In the Air Tonight" and "Take Me Home" but no longer. ITAT is firmly relegated to my Great Songs That Overexposure Has Killed List, and while TMH has a cool vibe, I think the song exposes Phil's limitations as a vocalist and feels like a symbol of how Phil is a good but never truly great solo artist. But I do really like the following songs, in ABC order. 1. Against All Odds 2. Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away 3. Easy Lover 4. Find A Way to My Heart 5. Hand in Hand 6. I Missed Again 7. It Don't Matter to Me 8. Something Happened On The Way to Heaven 9. We Said Hello Goodbye 10. The West Side A live version of the brilliant "Hand in Hand" from a bootleg recording I have called NO TICKET REQUIRED is my favorite solo Phil moment, with the epic deep groove and drum fills. My list only goes two deep. 1. Against All Odds 2. In the Air Tonight I was never a fan of Phil. I like him as a personality, but I never cared for the direction in which he took Genesis, or his solo career. He was unavoidable in the 80s, but I was happy to see him fade away. I thought I would be on an island by myself with Against All Odds. Didn't expect to find Joe there also. The song is overblown and over-produced, but I still like it.

Is it overproduced? There's some nice quiet moments with piano too. From 85 he bought into the US big stadium production sound like so many British musicians, and that turned me off some stuff like Easy Lover. It made him bigger in the US.

Not that overproduced/blown and it's just a quality song and I was surprised Phil wrote it. I just figured he sung it for the movie. Phil's voice fits it and he sings it with the right amount of urgency even if his voice is thin and smooth at times. I felt he is not trying too hard.

@@starrynight1657 Yeah the piano is good. His later stuff turned me off too but Easy Lover was ok to me. I've only seen the video and that helps, never heard it on the radio.

@@starrynight1657 Fair point. I guess I always considered it a little too much like a Diane Warren song, which generally means over-produced. But it is bombastic. Don't get me wrong, I do like it a lot.

@@markgatica12 At the time I don't think I normally liked big vocal ballads. For example I Want To Know What Love Is really turned me off, though I actually like it now partly because of the great video. But Against All Odds I always liked.

Joe's Against All Odds story is poignant and hilarious and awesome. The blank reaction from Jason tells me he either a) wasn't paying attention or b) has heard Joe tell that story too many times to count. 😂 Anyway, I know I'm not alone among the Listo faithful that more personal anecdotes from all 3 Listo boys would be tremendous. Also: Kram and I agree on the excellence of "The West Side," I agree that both "The Roof is Leaking" and "I'm Not Moving" are very cool deep cuts and suggest Phil may have been wise to experiment a bit more with his sound. And I love Jason but I think he overrates NJR. 🎶👍🍺🙏

I love In The Air Tonight just because he’s so bitter and twisted, I mean the lyrics hurt big time! We had a pop show over here in the UK called Top of the Pops which basically was the weekly chart show every Thursday evening (essential viewing back in the day!) and he performed In The Air Tonight with a pot of paint and a paintbrush placed on his piano in reference to his ex wife and her affair (allegedly) with their handyman 😆 absolutely brutal!! Yeah Air is bitter and twisted by no one really believe Phil felt that strongly at the time unless say the Alamo showing that night was canceled. A clever but good ploy to diversity his songwriting and audience. Well I could be way wrong.

Great list! I'm going to re-listen to songs you listed that I have forgotten about. One thing that got overlooked is that Phil is a great sad song writer: Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away is my favorite, but also You Know What I Mean and Why Can't It Wait Till Morning ... and of course Please Don't Ask from Duke.

Wow, OK Jason so you like, "Only You Know and I Know" and I think it's weak. I think this is largely just a question of taste regarding the (super cheesy) instrumentation and synth sounds but I don't think much of the song itself either. I agree with whoever decided it wasn't single material.

Props to all three of you in coming up with a Top Ten list for Phil Collins. From A Trick Of The Tail (5 stars) onwards, both Genesis and Phil's solo material became more unlistenable with every release.

Love the discussions they generate. I have listened to (and like) bands I'd never heard of because one of you have mentioned them - The Dawes come to mind.

I think I went off Phil aged about 8 because I found the film Buster sooooo depressing. In many ways that film also put me off checking out Genesis in later years....not good Phil ...not good🧐...but I have recently begun to rectify that oversight at least....I remember watching Top of the Pops and it felt like he was on every episode at one point....Each time he got older and bolder and more cheesy. It sounded dated then and sounds so so sooooo dated now.... I'm actually impressed with everyone's dedication to the cause this week....👏👏👏

Good singer. Great drummer. Not really a fan of much of his music. Never dug deeper than what was played on radio and MTV. Someone gifted me his first 2 albums on vinyl a few years ago, but they have yet to find their way to my turntable. On a more positive note, just listened to the world premiere of the new singles from ABBA. First new music from them in 40 years. It sounds like ABBA to me.

Greetings, but who’s the new addition you’ve got down the bottom and what have you done with Joe! “I Don’t care anymore” is hands down Phil’s best solo track. He gets a lot of stick but he made some good pop hits in the 80’s. Even though you probably have a huge itinerary already lined up, here’s some suggestions for future episodes; T Rex; Talk Talk; Elton John (I’d limit it though to just his 70’s & 80’s albums or you’ll be recording all day!) I cannot believe there has not been more love in the comments for the Phenix Horns (Earth, Wind and Fire's horn section) and their performances on the first two albums. Just outstanding stuff, especially combined with Collins' percussion skills. Proof that Phil's got some funk in him. If you can't dig that stuff then I don't know what to say.

Whether or not you dig "Only You Know and I Know," "I Don't Wanna Know," and other songs with that style, they are the reasons Phil got crapped on so much in the 80s. It's a cheesy sort of commercial sound akin to "We Built This City." One of the few exceptions to the rule on No Jacket is "Inside Out." That song has enough umph to make it good - great even.

I don’t think they sound cheesy at all. I think the sounds he used on that record have aged better than the vast majority of 80s pop records. Certainly better than We Built This City. -Jason

It's hard to rate Phil Collins; I guess I would never go out of my way to listen to any song by him but In the Air Tonight is good. And Against all Odds is a good soundtrack for a movie.

@@TastesLikeMusic I figured based on your taste in pop you wouldn’t have a problem with it. You’ve defended some of the pop punk stuff and I’ve always felt Ben Gibbard vocally was similar to a lot of those bands. It’s just that sort of pop sensibility and vocal style over electronic production.

I Missed Again, Hand In Hand, Like China. I only like his first two albums. He lost me with Sussudio!! Are you guys going to do U2 or Moody Blues?? I can't wait to see which one of you guys sits out which one. Those are two bands that I know all 3 of you can't all like. My prediction is Joe sits out Moody Blues and Jadon sits out U2. How close did I get??😂🤣.

The Moody Blues are essential. I read a funny story of how that pointless Rock and Roll Hall of Fame got potential voters to answer questions. One of those was - do you like The Moody Blues? If they said yes apparently they weren't allowed to become a voter lol. Eventually they changed their stance, but their only point is self promotion anyway. I will say DOFP is not their best album, the critics just stupidly ignored them after that.

@@starrynight1657 the RRHOF is meaningless to me anymore. the take those fan survey polls and totally disregard. the poll 2 or 3 years ago had judas priest winning easily and that was disregarded, and priest, as well as so , so many deserving bands will never get in. So many great 70s bands not getting in . My fav band alltime , deep purple[talk about deserving on so many levels] didnt get in till like 4 years ago.,and the year after yes finally got in . Sore subject lol

Agree with Joe that the earlier 80's deep cuts, especially on Hello and Face Value, are great. Do You Know, Do You Care, Thunder and Lightning, I'm Not Moving, I Cannot Believe It's True, his version of Tomorrow Never Knows, all fantastic songs. He got way too cheesy for my tastes later on, but from 80-85 with both his solo stuff and with Genesis he really was at the top of the pop-rock game.
