More years ago than I want to remember I had a small sound and lighting company in Sydney and ended up renting out to Digger Revell and doing FOH for him. Tommy was dating Karen Johns who sang with Digger at the time and would come to shows sometimes and sit at the desk with me. People would come over and start on with the Tommy you are the greatest you are amazing better than Clapton etc etc routine. His favorite answer was always, I'm not even the best guitar player in my house.

I first saw him playing in proserpine entertainment hall when i was 8 i used to own the kakadu sunrise cds, he was playing with his daughter and her boyfriend i think at the time, he may have not been a big name world wide but i believe the way he could express himself in his guitar playing could tell a story on its own without any lyrics, any instrumments playing along could only accompany his style of playing, now in my late 20s i saw him in airlie beach music festival which is the last time i saw him before he died, me now a pretty good guitar player myself learnt a few of his songs but that are mere immitations to what this great legend has acheived, australia has lost its best ever guitar player he will be missed by many.

I popped over to Phil’s place one night to drop off a demo he was putting some guitar tracks down for in the studio the next day. He put the CD on poured a couple of jacks and Pepsi max and sat down to listen to a G3 video he was jamming along with. A couple of hours later I said I’ve got to bail and I’d pick him up at 11 the next morning, after scaring the shit out of me with his snake collection once again, he got a kick out of seeing the terror on my face every time he tried handing me his beloved reptiles, he said hang on I’ll get that cd for you. I said, no that’s for you to learn the songs for tomorrow. He said, I have, I said bullshit, the CD was played once in the kitchen while we were in the lounge with G3 blaring, chatting, jamming, drinking Jack, you’re deaf as a post and you’ve learned those four song. He picked up his guitar played the four song plus the outline out the parts he was going to play the next day. I then remembered something his brother Tommy said, Phil could be could be watching tv or something hear a dog bark 6 blocks away and tell you what key the dog was barking in. I thought that statement was hyperbolic until that night but Tommy was not exaggerating in the slightest. Needless to say he nailed the four songs in the studio the next day and the engineer offered him a couple of hundred bucks to put some tracks down to another 2 songs he was working on. He listen to the two songs while drinking Jack and telling us a story that had us pissing ourselves laughing, went in and put amazing tracks down to both songs first take. Phil was a genius, a beautiful man and hilarious. RIP Phil you’re missed by many my friend.

This man is a wonderful wonderful and true musician. Music out today is about a casual sit down with music. Music to pass the time or dance to. The reason musicians like this are not famous is because people have lost the interest for music that makes you sit down face to face with music, which is a shame. The men that acknowledge this and continue into real music none the less are the lead guitarists of their time.

I have followed Tommy for many years, been to more of his shows than I can count, and have been to one of his teaching workshops, but what completely blew me away was when Phil and his band played with Tommy. That show completely blew me away. IT WAS THE VERY BEST SHOW I'VE EVER BEEN TO!!!!! NO BAND has matched that show since. I got to meet Phil after the show. What a fantastic and down to Earth guy. He was very patient in answering ALL of my technical questions. No big ego. Just a very giving, and all around great guy. I really wished he were coming back to my area sometime soon, but he's not.

I got to sit at his feet, literally, as he played impromptu to in one of the exhibition rooms at a music convention. He asked to borrow a guitar and there were many to choose from. Did he pick the $5000 Martin or boutique that was offered ? Nope, he just grabbed the closest that was offered to his outstretched hand which happened to be a $250 Epiphone acoustic. He made a sly joke about the fretboard action and made a quick adjustment to the tuning - then proceeded to put on a performance of bluegrass, rockabilly, and fiddle tunes at a level of mastery greater than most artists that make a living performing those genres. Amazing talent and salt of the earth guy
