The original Gibson Les Paul Standard ceased production at the end of 1960 after just 3 years of manufacture. With only around 1700 instruments sold, what makes them the most sort after guitar on the planet?

I love these guitars! I probably will never own one but am grateful to at least own a 2018 True historic R9 which is incredible. Since the old 59's are even better i can only imagine!😱

He played a mid 60's Burst to do the Bad company song? Well that is some backwards logic considering Mick Ralphs played a 58 on that song with Bad company! Still am grateful he plays the guitars and they are not locked up in a glass case where no one would hear or see them.

I love these guitars. But one thing that boggles my mind (especially about the 59s) is the quantity of them out there. I know that there aren't very many off them floating around out there, but it seems as if every 'famous' guitar player and vintage dealer has at 59 Les Paul. Is everyone that owns one making videos with their guitar..or are there a lot of fakes and reproductions (not reissues..but 'homemade' ones) being presented as authentic Les Pauls? ...It just seems like there are too many out there and that everyone has one. ...I'm a Left Handed player, so I doubt that I will ever come across one of these bad boys!

Michael R. Yep! tons of fakes out there. With help of the internet now, people don't get ripped off as much as they used to. I've built a few replicas myself. never to device, but I have fooled a few people, only to tell them it was a replica. I do lots of fender stuff too. So I know I can do it, I'm sure there are a ton of people doing too. it's one thing to have a tribute but a counterfeit meant to device is not Good. A fine line between the two. Shady stuff. But for those who can't afford the real ones, the fakes are almost as Nice.

Jerrod Morgan - Thanks for the reply, brother. I totally agree with you on the tribute vs counterfeit issue. Deception is awful. That is amazing that your have made your own guitars! Incredible man! What is the hardest aspect to reproduce..other than the classic sound? hehe I'm sure that the pickups are difficult to make and have them sound the same. Hey, since you are a 'burst lover', do you know if Gibson made any left handed Bursts or Goldtops back in the classic days? Like in 58,59 or 60..? I once saw a picture of Paul McCartney playing a Lefty one time and the picture caption said it was a 59. But the picture source wasn't from a guitar expert. So they could have been confused. I don't recall hearing about any old, left handed LPs.

Michael R. The hardest thing to replicate for me was the finish believe it or Not. lots of trial and error. But i have a serect formula for gettimg the lacqer to weather Check and the red to fade like the real ones. I don't wind my own pickups, but there are lots of good clones out there. Im not a veteran builder by no means but im getting there. People try to replicate that burst sound, but it's hard since they all sound different. I think there's 4 know lefty bursts. not sure about gold tops. if you ever want a custom build, hit me up on Instagram @jerrymorganmusic

Hi Michael, There were only 1700 original Les Paul Standards made from 1958 to 1960 when Gibson discontinued them. So that is why they are so rare. At the time no one was buying them because they were to heavy and people just did not like how they sounded. Once Eric Clapton made the Beano Album everything changed and they became very sort after. Many gutarists could not afford the early 70's £1k price tag and tried to copy the look by customising 68 /69 and early 70's standard Gold Top & other Delux's. We recently interviewed Dan Hawkins from the Darkness that collects Reissue Year 2000 Les Paul Standards, and really rates the months of September and October. Be even he say that the instruments can vary from guitar to guitar.! You can currently buy a left handed 58 reissue from the custom shop from around 4k! Or reissues on ebay for 3k! like this one - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gibson-Les-Paul-1958-Reissue-Left-Handed-guitar/222892006739?hash=item33e5661d53:g:R10AAOSwaVRasX4l Thanks for watching - more to come.

Cork sniffer art dealer b.s. Get a degaussed pickups in a nice resonant Les Paul and it will sing and honk just the same. I have played 57 to 60 Les Paul’s, some sound great, some don’t, some play great, some don’t. This is the same for any Les Paul. Best eras since were early to mid 90s Les Pauls

Idk, people who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an 'investment' might want to care if other people are willing to pay that kind of money, and hopefully more when you want to sell this 'investment'.

SGspecial84 I inherited mine. I have respect for the guy's who buy them and actually play them. Like Joe B!
@SGspecial84
@SGspecial84 6 жыл бұрын
Joe B is a millionaire. Of course he'll go out and play a 59' burst without blinking an eye. Not only that, but the wear he creates adds more value to the guitar because he's a guitar hero. It makes zero sense for guys like us to compare our situation to his. If you inherited yours its a totally different story as well. You didn't shell out the money to purchase an 'investment'. You just landed in gold. Thing is, most of them were very well made instruments, and the good ones have absolutely wonderful tone, but there's no reason to buy one of these to capture that tone anymore. New guitars are that good these days! If you buy one as an 'investment', well good luck, because no one cares.
