Phil Kelsall MBE (Principal Organist at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool) performs a medley of music for the Sindy Swing. This was recorded live at the Astoria Centre, Barnsley during our "Blackpool Tower Tea Dance" on 12th September 2021.
The organ featured in this video is the 3/18 Compton theatre organ at the Astoria Centre, Barnsley.
Phil Kelsall will be returning to the Astoria Centre to perform another concert and dance weekend in September 2022. For further details visit astoriacentre....

This is splendid, I so enjoy I Wonder Where My Baby is Tonight, and having the Charleston in the medley made it even better. Just cracking, and plenty of horn usage that was interesting to hear.

I've 'test-fired' so many WurliTzer artists and Compton artists - Phil is the cleanest, most accurate of them all....and the swell usage and timing....he gets it right. Not naming....but some others drown the main line under the bass or with NO bass and scribble the score....one even makes a simple presentation sound like a wasps nest - not good. I so dislike the bouncy method of playing, he might as well be sitting on a spring.

Whilst I am sorry to hear you do not like this style of music, it is understandable, and happily for you there are many more organists that play in a more sedate fashion compared to ones such as Mr Kelsall that play with the Blackpool Bounce. It has been quite popular however and if that’s what keeps the Wurlitzers at Blackpool in use, that’s the goal. Cheers.

The Blackpool style is not everybody's cup of tea but he is playing for dancing which does require a clear concise rhythm and a certain amount of "bounce" to give the music a lift which then inspires the dancers.

As an organist of over 40 years I can say that certain styles and tempos can create a natural bounce when playing - it is a very physically demanding instrument to play. Phil Kelsey is the maestro imho. Also note that unlike a lot of organists who play for dancing he does not use a metronome on the music stand to keep time!

In some ways it is similar to the Roller skating dance music. There are different styles and rhythm times to skate to ,but no bouncy bouncy music , because you would fall down if on roller skates.
