Phil was a beauty in T.O. he was never the problem. He did his thing, score. He'd be welcomed back in T.O. now but sadly we don't have the cap space. Great guy. Always appreciated him. Some media individuals here created drama with him, but no one really disliked him here in T.O.. He did well winning two cups and I'm happy for him.

It deserves some good sports journalism to produce a proper essay on how he managed to endure taking the heat for a poor team (though he was still outstanding individually), then go over to a great team and become an instant fan favourite. Players, team support staff, fans, all loved him in no time. (Or at least it seemed instant to me who never followed the Pens).

he had great potential in toronto, too bad it never worked out. leafs media was so toxic during that period it was pretty insane, that combined with a sub-par team was pretty hopeless for any success but phil still had pretty good seasons

Phil was and will always be one of my favorite leafs. I was so pissed when they traded him.... No one cared though, the majority hated him in Toronto, and I still don't understand why.

s3Mezith He was a floater, a whiner, not a team leader, and had a really negative attitude. He is an amazing hockey player, but his personality just wasn't going to fit through the rebuild.
@s3Mezith
@s3Mezith 5 жыл бұрын
He would have fit fine, I think the fans just wouldn't have been fine with it. Personality should only factor into hockey in a minor way. The guy was quiet and tried to be left alone. How is that a bad personality? It's a rhetorical question, don't answer it. I respect your opinion just giving you mine.

s3Mezith the kessel trade worked out amazingly as the leafs got their number 1 goalie and kapanen from that trade and it was necessary for the rebuild
@wizardtower7696
@wizardtower7696 5 жыл бұрын
I understand why people love and hate Kessel but the leafs had to give him up to help with the rebuild. If they hadn't traded kessel they wouldn't be where they are now with the players they have now. Now I'm not saying the Kessel trade was the only contributing factor to their successful rebuild but it was certainly one of the main ones, and I personally prefer to have their young stars over kessel, JVR, Phaneuf etc.

Babu 402 "After weeks of trade rumors, on July 1, 2015, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were entering a rebuilding phase, traded Kessel, Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon, and a conditional second round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a blockbuster deal for Kasperi Kapanen, Scott Harrington, Nick Spaling, and conditional first-and third-round draft picks" From Phil Kessel Wiki page.

yeah but no doubt he was a great player would've been so cool to see him on a line with marner knowing him and marner's playmaking a healthy lupul could still put up 20-30 goals and 50-60 points but he's not working his body enough anymore I feel as if he doesn't have the same drive to play hockey anymore.

Leafs Fan this is true, but also everyone has their own favorite player and some people don't like them the same way, I myself wasn't a fan of Phaneuf, I didn't feel like he was a true leader, also not the greatest defenseman he was slow af, but I do have respect for Phil, I wished we had better chances making the playoffs when he was here, led the team in goals almost every year, go leafs go!

Too bad he took a holiday in last playoffs. Like some other Pens forwards, was intimidated from going to net or paying price along boards. Seemed to be a feeling that 2 Cups was enough, esp for Rutherford who got no real veteran backup goalie and no net-front clearing d man. Pens lack toughness to go with speed. Once other teams like Caps caught up on speed, the Pens cldnt match toughness. Only Crosby and Malkin looked serious. But other Pens fans will wail and whine that I'm dead wrong. How many of them have ever played the game or can even skate?
@stupidas9466
@stupidas9466 5 жыл бұрын
I always disliked Kessel as a player because he was lazy defensively. Everyone skates faster going for a goal than on a backcheck, but the difference in Kessel's speed was shocking and a disgrace. And then there was his whining and pouting when things weren't going well. You could visibly see the difference on the ice in his effort, even offensively. And then there was his lack of stamina from his unwillingness to get in shape and lose that spare tire from all the donuts and hot dogs he ate. And the lack of any strength on the puck and the way he would consistently do "fly byes" instead of taking another player out of the play and shying away from the slightest physical contact. I do recognize that he had tremendous speed and jump out wide and is one of the best at letting a wrister go on the move, but i could never get over his inability to do all the things that are important in a team game.
