Philadelphia Derringer - Mechanical function and lock mechanism

With this video I show the mechanism of a percussion-lock-pistol.
My pistol is a Spanish replica of a copy from the famous Philadelphia Deringer which was first produced in 1835.
I wanted to demonstrate how loading and firing works. However because of legal reasons (outside of a shooting range) I had to substitute the black powder with some plastic pellets for demonstration. Therefore I cannot shoot in this video, but I can still show how the percussion caps work. The focus of this video is about the mechanics of the percussion lock.

@@Flederratte Two commenters on another Philadelphia derringer replica video said that the lead ball ricocheted and struck them. People forget that the infamous coward Booth fired the gun from almost point blank range at the back of Lincoln's head.
@Flederratte
@Flederratte Жыл бұрын
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL Yes that is how it happened. Still there was not that much energy in the shot. The lead ball which killed Lincoln can still be visited today. It is not that much deformed considering Lead is a very soft metal and can easily be flattened by just dropping it on the ground. Compared to a black powder pistol with a longer barrel there is very little kinetic energy behind the shot from a Philadelphia Deringer. It also is very dependant on the burn rate of the powder.

Nice gun, just picked one up at auction. On yours, is the trigger a little loose, and do you need to put a lot of effort into releasing the hammer? Mine seems a little clunky. Of course, that's probably how the originals were... 😅
@Flederratte
@Flederratte Жыл бұрын
Yes that is true. There was nothing to push the trigger down except gravity or when it is cocked the sear. I forged a little spring which pushes the trigger down and it was quite an improvement. Before this the trigger would make a rattling sound when the hammer was not cocked. I did not have to put in much effort to pull the trigger. You can see my finger gets barely deformed by pulling the trigger at 3:22minute. However the mechanism has to be clean and well greased for the percussion caps to fire reliably because the main spring is not very strong.

No. It is fully functional. The sparks on the outside are just a by product of the explosion from the primer. There is plenty of fire directed through the bore inside the barrel. Though the bore is quite small so that the expanding gas from black powder does not escape towards the hammer but to the muzzle instead.

@Flederratte

That is a good question. I actually do not know the answer. Maybe it is for safety reasons. The half cock is used to put the percussion cap on the nipple and also prevents the hammer from hitting the percussion cap if the pistol is dropped on the ground. Full cock is only engaged before you want to fire. Maybe you can find information on the internet about why half cock exists on percussion pistols.

Judging by your question I advise you to learn a lot more about the topic before attempting to handle guns and ammo. There is some knowledge required to be safe with hazardous things. Otherwise serious accidents may be the result. This type of gun only needs a projectile, some loose propellant and a percussion cap. The propellant (black powder or safe substitute) might be regulated depending on the laws in your region. Lead balls for projectiles can easily be cast from molten lead or bought. The percussion caps are available to buy.

I would assume that loading a musket takes more time. A musket is more bulky and not as easy to hold for capping and to put on the ground for reaching the muzzle. Also ramming the charge and projektile down a longer barrel takes more time. However a musket has way better accuracy and gives the projectile much more kinetic energy.

"The term "derringer" has become a genericized misspelling of the last name of Henry Deringer. *Many copies of the original Philadelphia Deringer pistol were made by other gun makers worldwide* and the name was often misspelled; this misspelling soon became an alternative generic term for any pocket pistol..."

You can find some muzzle loaders in cal. .38 or .36 but they are mainly revolvers and pepperboxes. Pistols and rifles tend to have larger bores from .45 to .50 or .69.

The name of the inventor is Henry Deringer (with only one "r") that is true. However the style of gun and similar designs became popular under the name "Derringer". This gun is a replica of the Philadelphia Derringer.
