The day after the Flyers finished off the Islanders, the Inquirer's sports section headline was, "Lindbergh Sends the Isles Packing". Boy, that was a keeper.

I’m convinced they win the Cup in 1986 if Pelle lives. Edmonton lost early in playoffs as that was the best Flyers team of those 3 years. Mark Howe was a +85 and McCrimmon was +83 that year as a defensive duo!

@Chris I think so too. Pelle was only getting better with every game, he was more experienced that year too. Edmonton for some reason couldn't get it together and beat Calgary so nothing was going to stand in their way that year but alas....it never was and Pelle died. The season was in the toilet right there, Froese wasn't ready to take the team deep into the playoffs. Mike Keenan knew it too. When Pelle died he told people it was at that moment he knew the Stanley Cup was out of reach.

I still remember finding out about Pelle's accident. My brother picked me up at a friends house (I was in 7th grade) as we were going to the Eagles game that day. I still remember his exact words, "Did you hear about Pelle? He got in a car accident!" Now this was before the internet so nobody had any idea of how serious it was and I said to my brother, "He probably broke his arm or leg as should be back for the playoffs."

@@chrisolivo6591 Yeah it was big big news up here in Canada too. I remember when it happened. The kids at school, it was all we talked about and then his hockey card became very valuable and suddenly very hard to come by. It was all over the TV and newspapers. Anything hockey as you can imagine is big news up here in Canada.

Jason Voorhees I do remember the Oilers asked the Flyers to delay their first game back after Pelle’s death as that was the first meeting since the Finals. That’s how much respect they had, but the Flyers knew they had to play a game just to get through the grieving process. Sometimes I wish I grew up in Canada as the NHL is virtually ignored by the National media. If you watched ESPN, you wouldn’t even know hockey existed as you maybe get 2 highlights of Crosby and Ovechkin at the end of the show. I get the Hockey Night In Canada Feed on NHL Network so it’s nice to get a in-depth perspective of the sport once a week. Luckily the Flyers are beloved in our town and as they’ve sold out since the 70’s, so the local media gives them their due compared to non-hockey markets like Florida or California.

It is absolutely remarkable that from 1982-84 the Flyers had Clarke, Barber and Sittler to provide veteran leadership and playoff experience. Yet, they choked bad in the playoffs, losing 9 straight playoff games, to make it one and done each year. But when those players are gone the next year, the Flyers suddenly make the finals. This might have been the greatest example of addition by subtraction in the entire history of professional sports!

those cooperalls were unwearable and were a huge factor in the team underachieving. (You flew 20-50 feet when you fell down in those things.) Plus Clarke's decline was steep beginning as early as 1977. Meanwhile Sittler was shot by the time he got to the Flyers. Barber was still all right but the rest of the team wasn't ready for prime time yet.

I think this was the year they had a different Home Game schedule in the playoffs. It was a 2-3-2 schedule. Once the Flyers lost game two, they never got back from Edmonton. So much for a Home Ice advantage.

So glad I was born in 72 and watched this team in the 80s. They were awesome. That franchise does not exist anymore. Nothing but a shell of its former self, embarrassing themselves, the fans and the city for a decade. Move them to houston

It's too bad Flyers had some Major Injuries to some of their best players, MARK HOWE (HOF'amer), TIM KERR (Teams Top Goal Scorer almost every season), They had a Rookie Goaltender which didn't help , Brian Propp and Peter Zezel was hurting too. Who knows, had Pelle not die and got more experience he might have been the guy they needed to beat em in 1987 as it went to Game 7.

The Isles had won the Wales Conference 5x in a row. So to beat the Isles was a big deal.
@DNSKansas

Actually, the Isles won the Wales Conference three times in a row. In 1980 and 1981, the playoffs were not segregated by division or conference, meaning teams from the same division could meet in any round of the playoffs, like the Flyers and Islanders did in the '80 finals.

Anybody know WHY Quebec had Home Ice Advantage in the Conference finals? Flyers had a WAY better regular season record! I have never understood that!
@ckendall67
@ckendall67 11 ай бұрын
For two seasons( 1984 & '85 ), the division that owned the better overall record in the regular season held home-ice in the conference final. As such, the Adams Division had the better record overall than the Patrick Division & thus whomever won the Adams Division final( the Nordiques in this case )had home-ice against the Patrick Division winner( the Flyers ). It was an odd format, but it was done away with following the '85 playoffs.

The first part was true. In his early years, he could be a great motivator and an extremely effective head coach. Unfortunately, too often he would allow his emotions to get the better of him and make irrational and self-defeating decisions.

Pelle Lindbergh wasn't known to be a big drinker and remember these were young guys pretty much all in their early to mid twenties. It was quite common to meet up after hours or games to celebrate and unfortunately these young guys were treated like celebrities even by the cops so they weren't deterred in any way not to drink and drive. Pelles love of driving really fast with the fact he was out drinking made for a horrible situation that could have happened to any of us at that age.
