I hope it stays that way for a while. I grew in NY and sadly most of these types of places have shut down. Sure, there are new spots in their place, but they are what I call "hipster food"; overpriced small portions and no sense of community.

@@TheOriginalArchie Part of me dislikes the fact that NYC overshadows Philly as a native to the area but also it's a blessing. I love the fact that the Italian Roast Pork Sandwich here is still less known than the Cheesesteak or that my favorite Cheesesteak places aren't too overrun by tourists.

I think Italian American food, much like Jewish Deli was meant to say, “we are prosperous” here. We are making it. The huge pasta servings, the cheese, the over-the-top dishes which are very un-Italian, represented prosperity in America. The reason why they remain popular is because those meals recognize our grandparents and great grandparents struggles.

Oh my lord. I grew up in Camden, across the Delaware from Philly. Many of my family lived in Philly, and I did as well when I reached my twenties. None of us were Italian but we grew up with this food and I miss it now that I haven't been living in the area for over three decades. Maybe I should retire there.

As an Italian, I was grateful to see the emphasis placed on Italian AMERICAN food which seems to mostly have the “ flavor” of the southern Italian cooking of a 100 years ago. It all looks delicious, and made with lots of love. Although very appetizing, I don’t think I would be able to eat a kilo of pasta by myself which seems to be the individual portions in Italian American restaurants! 😂
