Turned out very nice Phil. I just came in from my shop for a break, Since I have Fridays off it’s my entertainment to watch other turners. At 7 am was 82 degrees now at 10 it’s 90, ugg, will head back out until it hits 100+. 👍🇺🇸

Thank You Phil...Thank You Peter...Phil your humble style of turning is admirable. You say you do not know what you are doing BUT you always pull out a beautiful end product from ugly duckling wood. I enjoy the adventure of it all. I like how you are experimenting with new camera angles. Phil I do have ONE complaint...You only have ONE show per week !!! I look forward to next week....tm

Phil, you have done it again, your intuition about the bead shoulders were right on it stands out nicely. Really a definition point for the bowl area. Your video's make me want to get back to the lathe, I've been doing a long term flat work job that is getting old and I am not even half done with it. Need to get back to turning to rekindle myself. Thanks again for inspiration.

Thank you so much, Steve! I've been a woodworker for 50 years and what you describe with your flat work is probably why I decided to become a turner. It just makes for a simpler lifestyle, I guess. I too used to spend days or weeks on projects. Now, at my age, I realize life is just too short and I want to create a collection of work instead of a couple really nice pieces. Instant gratification falls in there somewhere, too, I suppose. Thank you for watching and commenting! Phil

Phil NOT ABOUT THIS PIECE 0 I couldn't get at the comments section for your "I did it all wrong" video. Hoping you see this one here. Biggest thing you did wrong? Dissed yourself and the bowl. I'd be proud to have that piece - seriously. Please let me know if you are willing to part with it. GREAT video. Lots of good learning. I don't know how to send you a picture but I did a salad bowl recently of a magnificent piece of curly ambrosia maple. The wood is just breathtaking. Even after I turned the bottom paper thin in the middle. I couldn't bear to let it go without trying a repair. So I DID put a very pretty walnut insert in the bottom of the bowl. The bowl was actually a gift - hard to let go of it once I saw how beautiful it was. Everyone who has seen it thinks it's beautiful and no-one has every asked why I put that stupid walnut plug in the bottom. Very pleased to be one of your subscribers. Tom

Wow! Phil does classic. Who knew? Just teasing. Bowl looks great. Sometimes dampening the wood with water will soften the fibers, making it easier to turn with less tear out. Spray bottle by the lathe works great.

Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop Bad habit of remembering little things I pick up here and there. Tried the wet wood when working a really dry piece with frustrating chip out from everything including a scraper! And it worked!! So, of course, had to share it with you if it makes your crafting a little easier. Ready for more wood yet? Or are you still working down the gift pile? I have a nice piece of walnut with your name on it!

@@lauriecremore5601 I've been there, Laurie, I understand. I think this lathe is what made me decide to start my channel. I just couldn't imagine fiddling around with belts and no reverse. That's me, others would probably excel at it but I need the ease of use to allow me to concentrate on what I'm doing without making a fool of myself. I've had a few lathes and this is the first one with all the bells and whistles and yes, it makes a huge difference. I'm glad you are having a go, that's what really matters!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Hi Phil, First of all, you are a " real genuine person" . I really appreciate your reply, and your totally right as when I think back at my having a go at Pottery.... I then.... year's ago bought myself a Kick wheel ( I'm sure you know what a Kick wheel is ) but here goes....yes it's one that to keep the clay turning, you had to keep kicking the foot lever all the time, and in doing that just took my concentration away in trying to produce a pot. Yes.. then I wished that I bought an Electric wheel, to have saved all that. The old phrase... Live and Learn. It's as as you say.... Bell's and whistles. Too right Phil.

@@lauriecremore5601 Yes, I know exactly what a kick wheel is and that is a great comparison to what I was trying to describe. It also reminds me of the treadle lathe that our predecessors used to create beautiful, one of a kind pieces. That makes me feel just a little spoiled!

Phil that wood sounded and looked harder than the Locust end grain I turned. I thought I saw sparks coming off your bowl gouge a couple of times. No wonder your hand was burning....lol But you sure turned it into a very pretty bowl. The bead really looks great on it. WOW that's beautiful Phil I love the bead and yes I agree that it's Birch wood even looks like yellow birch definitely not oak ! Nice piece Phil !!! Happy wood turnings to you and all !👍if you are on messager I have a great story for you when I was 18 give me a shout back it's funny and if you want to post it that's fine with me it involves me turning a 6 foot piece on my grandfather's lathe on the outboard side!

Sometimes I feel like the words beautiful, or awesome, or gorgeous etc. seem over used, but how else do you convey how wonderful a piece of turned art is? I really, really like this bowl. Simple yet very lovely! 💗 (Even if it wasn’t simple to turn.) The more I look at it, the more I like it! BTW, you forgot the “Ki Yay!” at the end of your “Yippee” for sanding! 😂😂 🤠 🤠🐴🐴🦟 (P.S. Home Sweet Home) 😉 Very Big Virtual 🤗🤗🤗 to you! 💫💜 ~ Me

Somehow, I knew you would like this one, Roma. It just seems to me to be your style, though I don't know how I would know that. Yippee is sarcasm, Ki Yay indicates a desire to proceed. We'll go with the Yippee! LOL! Enjoy your free time and hugs to you, too! Phil

Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop : LOL!! I guess since I use the whole phrase, Yippee Ki Yay, sarcastically, that’s what I was thinking. 😆😆 Actually when I use it, I say in an extremely sarcastic tone, “Well, Yippee Ki Yay”! and I leave it up to who ever I say it to to finish the phrase, if they choose. 😉😉 😂😂 ~ 🦋💜

Hi Phil, That is beautiful. I have a piece of Eucalyptus I'm currently turning. The grain looks very similar but the checking is far greater on my piece. I'll be filling the checks with 2 part epoxy glue and coffee grounds as they are quite deep and about 3/16" wide. Cheers, Huw

it looks like birch or maple very beautiful piece shape is never an accident. I know this from carving wood just when I think I am going to carve a one shape it turns out to be something else. I enjoy carving and have come to the place where I just pick up a piece of wood and start to whittle away at it and sure enough it it not very long and it starts to take shape.

One thing for sure Phil whatever it is ( reminds me of white Oak), the finished bowl/dish is a really nice piece & would look great displayed vertically on a wooden dresser. The bead is just the right amount of detail (imho), very handsome 👍🏻. Enjoy your weekend and catch you next time. All the best from the U.K. Geof

Howdy Phil Looks like white oak to me ....Birch is light in color like maple and softer than oak... . at less in my part of the world . could you smell anything when turning ? Does look so nice Phil ...nice platter what ever type of wood . Very nice grain . End grain is harder then straight gain to turn and very dusty too . Still like working with it ....I have a bunch of oak to turn when dry ...all end grain . very nice piece Phil ..... like that beed keep on turnin'

Howdy Bruce! I miss a lot of the smells because of the mask I wear. The reason I thought this to be Birch is because I could see the coloring and grain after I got done with the bandsaw. I should have shown that part. Thank you, Bruce, for watching and your support! Phil
