Philharmonia Sessions: Beethoven's Prometheus

Stephen Fry tells the story of Beethoven's ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, with animation by Hillary Leben.
An ancient Greek creation story tells of Prometheus stealing fire from Mount Olympus, to bring lumps of clay to life. Prometheus then calls on Apollo, god of music and dance, the Muses, and a host of other deities to teach his Creatures what it is to be fully human. Our former Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen guides us through this timeless but also timely story.

In a long life of music I’ve never experienced the whole work, just the overture. It’s a fantastic performance. I don’t fully go along with the critics - let’s just say that there’s a little of the Haydnesque among the Beethoven. And it’s delightful to get the background story too, how the gods go home, and leave humans to run the world. (Look where that’s got us!) Stephen is only slightly too precious, and to top it all off, I fell for 1st bassoon!

Thank you for a wonderful evening. I enjoyed the story and the music. One of the few silver linings of this terrible disease. It enables me sitting in Cairo to enjoy this beautiful music and performance

Brilliant performance!!! Beethoven's glorious and lively music paired with loving humour of Stephen Fry's storytelling, orchestra's perfect crystal sound and sprinkled with vivid animation! This is probably my favourite Philharmonia Session to date :)

The Creatures of Prometheus, wonderfully narrated by Stephen Fry and brilliantly conducted by Esa Pekka Salonen. And special kudos to Hillary Leben. I absolutely loved the animation! Thank you for sharing this production. I will certainly watch and listen to this again!

This and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf narrated by David Bowie are two pieces I like to share with people who are just getting in to orchestral music or ballet/opera. The Philharmonia gives a brilliant performance (as always), and Stephen Fry was an excellent choice as narrator... the animation and even the camera work capturing the performance was wonderful!

Much applause! I've heard the overture played to open a few concerts, but the whole piece should be played more often. I would also love to see an historical reproduction of the full original ballet. Great performance from all. I miss the Philharmonia so much! Stephen Fry was the perfect pick for narrator.

For the record, we're quite fond of the fangs. Sheila, we're sorry you found the animations distracting. They are actually conceived for a general audience, not just for kids. Thank you, Hillary Leben, for your hard work on this, and for your humour!
