It’s hard to overstate the influence of New York City composer Philip Glass. Along with Steve Reich, his minimalist compositions transformed the world of classical music and, eventually, popular music in general.
Glass’ early epiphanies occurred in Paris during his time in the mid-’60s studying under Nadia Boulanger and in New York when he heard Steve Reich’s “Piano Phase.” These events helped set Glass on a course toward the repetitive, dramatic, and conceptually rigorous style that has become his trademark.
Throughout the ’70s Glass refined his work, resulting in career-defining compositions like Music In Twelve Parts and Einstein On The Beach. In the process, he became a popular sensation, a serious composer who wasn’t willfully obscure or too difficult to understand. Glass’ stunning soundtrack work for films like The Thin Blue Line and The Hours, and a symphony based on David Bowie’s album Heroes, has only elevated his standing as one of America’s most popular living composers.

I don’t understand Phillip Glass’ music, either, and yet I’m intrigued every time I hear it. Aphex Twin is easy to like. Put them together and you’ve got something INTERESTING 🧐

aphex isn't easy to like at all if you don't like harsh timbres. his 80s/90s stuff is easy. after that not so much.

I'm probably in the minority in that I came to the collaboration as a Glass fan first but I came out of it a fan of both. Philip Glass did a similar thing with Ravi Shankar - where each would compose a piece and present it to the other and the other would have their ensemble play it how it fit their style and instrumentation. It's truly a wonderful experiment to take the music of someone else and translate it into your own musical language - especially if that language is very different than your own. I'm not sure that Icct Hedral is one of my very favorite AFX II tracks, but I think it most definitely adds something very worthwhile to Richard's catalog.

Saw Glass in Bristol many years ago.. absolutely amazing… the audience was made up of the classical folk in dinner attire.. and weirdo electronica people, Philip played beautifully and both sets of the audience loved it. So glad I got to be there.

I had a chance several years back to hear Mr. Glass live with full orchestra playing his Heroes composition (among many others). Richard James' remix of Glass' version, basically combining elements of himself, Glass, and Bowie remains one of my favorite go to tracks. Of course my best friend decided to get married and make me his best man on the exact day of the concert. I'm still bitter about it. 😅

There were some sounds that I had to warm up to with Richard's music. It didn't make sense. I couldn't congeal the sound.. But then I started hearing it and I could see. It became less like noise and became organic. There still are certain sounds/noises that I don't like, i.e. highpitched tones sustaining through a track, but those are designed to irritate to a degree. I've been listening to Aphex since '96.

He sequences pretty much everything. If you watch his shows he rarely actually actively is playing the keyboard. He’s a drum machine guy through and through, and that’s why he’s so good.

Like how he "tryed" to explain his "musical" training. With richard...you never ask questions. He knows his path and where it will go. Essentially Phil was an "experiment" to him. And it worked beautifully

Iccthedral - but his version is not on the LP, it's on the Donkey Rhubarb EP. RDJ also leaked a previous version of it in his "Soundcloud dump" days. He notoriously said he really didn't like Glass's first version and made him redo it.

I can’t be the only one who never wants to see something like an RBMA or Fact: Against the Clock with Aphex as the focus. Please nobody spoil that mysterious layer for me, it adds to the experience of enjoyment! I like little hints, like the video he put out of Vordhosbn being played on a tracker, or the Tuss rotary speaker video. But no need for complete exposition.

I actually feel quite the opposite way. I'd love to take a closer look at the original tracker files of tracks like Ziggomatic 17 or whatever...Just to learn from them. I used to have dreams of Squarepusher showing me his way around the Yamaha QY 700 (nerdy as hell). But it might not be that interesting to people who don't make music themselves.

@@guruleinii oh man I would really love to see the tracker files as well. Pretty sure RDJ, Squarepusher and Venetian Snares have all used trackers 💙

@@21stCenturyDub Totally. Squarepusher uses a mode on the QY that's quite tracker-ish (but he's only mentioned trackers once, afaik). I'm pretty sure that Richard started using trackers in the mid-nineties already as he went on to influence the demo-scene quite a bit (people such as Bogdan Raczynski) up until the early 2000s. Venetian Snares has been using trackers forever, but I think he's more hardware-oriented these days (lots of Elektron machines). Autechre also used Renoise for a while and actually worked with Snares a little bit. I wish both would release some of those files, the results must have been mental!
