@@Jay23445 DiCaprio was great as a kid, but he never changed or evolved. He was lucky to work with great directors and writers, but it's been ages since he surprised with his actual acting. Hoffman's caliber is very rare. We're lucky though. There have been a good handful of masters at work over the last decades.

My generations Anthony Hopkins. This man brought more emotions to the screen than just about anyone ive ever seen. He was the kind of actor that could pull you so far into the scene that you forgot it was him for a moment, and he made you truly question who he was with his ability to create personality traits seemingly at will. Very few will ever attain that level of acting.

I believe Mr. Hoffman, as he states in this interview , has no need to fear that he is pretentious at all. He was great, perhaps to much so...maybe a victim of perfectionism, maybe, I can't say, but I believe he was a genius at his craft. "Thus in the execution of a work of art the painter has his colors, his canvass, and his brushes; the sculptor has his clay, his chisel, and his modeling tools; the poet has his words, rhythm, harmony and rhyme. Every art has its different instruments; but the instrument of the actor is himsel." Actors On Acting."

You can hear it when he talks, he absolutely loved what he did, but he also sounds like he just needed a break. He talks about wanting to take a year sometimes, slow it down and do a play, but then he also implies that that would mean passing up good opportunities. Once you slow down in that industry it can mean you're out of the loop of consistent, good roles, sometimes permanently. It's not an ironclad rule, but think about how many actors are popular for a few years, then totally disappear. Sadly, it looks like the pressure to constantly perform or quit may have led him to seek such a dangerous release.

As an artist, who is left handed with a High IQ (double edged sword, all of them) and started out at 14, I can say that really creative people have a tendency to do drugs or drink to make the noise go away. It’s not a bad noise, not all “Artists” are haunted, but the best ones usually have voices that they need to keep quiet. I don’t think that being rich and famous makes them do drugs, just makes it easier. Him, Ledger, Robin Williams are great examples. It is really sad and it is a shame

I hate the term character actor. It’s often used when they try to say he is not a leading man. Hoffman was a leading man in every single sense of the word.
@djstarsign
@djstarsign 3 жыл бұрын
Character actor is a compliment. Many A-listers wish they had the talent of character actors. Some character actors have charm, charisma and looks and end up becoming leading men. Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy, and Oscar Isaac are all character actors who have leading man qualities. Jude Law and Ben Affleck are more digestible matinee types (for lack of a better term) but don’t have the same level of talent as a character actor. Actually, I take it back, Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy, Dazed and Confused, and Good Will Hunting was a great character actor. He lost something when he became a movie star. Matt Damon still has strong character actor vibes. So does Leo DiCaprio. Best character actor transitioning to A-list star is Daniel Day-Lewis. Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Vince Vaughn, Tom Hanks, and Chris Evans are all safe bet actors with star power but not much range. PSH was one of the greatest. His role in Charlie Wilson’s War is the best thing about that movie.
