As a former meth addict who smoked it on a daily basis, the hardest part was the first couple of months when I quit. You have to get rid of people in your life who enable you, completely shut down from that world, but most of all YOU have to want to quit. Nobody else can force someone because it won’t work. I’m proud to say I’m 14 years sober & I don’t plan on going back. I avoid any movies that involve it because when I see it I get that ache in my knees I use to get when I wouldn’t have any to smoke. Stay away from the stuff if you can because you’ll never get that first high. It’s a vicious circle of lying, cheating & stealing while chasing it. A slow and painful death. I hope someone sees this that needs it. Stay strong & know you are not alone in the fight.

I am going to be honest, this guy is arguably the greatest actor ever. The range of roles he has played. He was never the same person in any movie. He could be extremely menacing, extremely hilarious and simultaneously extremely intense. His delivery was just top notch. The range of emotions that this guy had, the subtlety like My God!! So many people come up with different names for title of "best actor ever", some for extreme overacted outbursts without anything else to offer, some for the sole reason of "accents and voices" and showmanship, some for their weight losses and transformation, some who are heavily mainstreamed names, but if you pay a closer attention, there has never been a better actor than Philip Seymour Hoffman in my opinion.

Paul what a great story! Thank you for sharing! It’s nice to hear what a humble guy he was he was so talented! But I will share a small story of my own of meeting famous people during college I had a job as a bellman at the Hyatt Regency downtown Chicago and every day sports teams actors and comedians I would see walking through the halls or checking in. So I met some of my childhood idols Larry Bird Magic Johnson race car drivers Jerry Seinfeld and Richard Lewis Todd Rundgren. But two in particular beautiful women back in the 80s was an actress by the name of Emma Sams I believe she was on like Dynasty or falcon crest I think General Hospital for years? But I checked her in and she was so so down to earth and normal it wasn’t even funny but at the time she was probably rated as one of the top 10 most beautiful woman in the world at the time? So I checked her and gave her the lay of the land she told me she was going to be there for a few days and up close with hardly any make up on she was truly one of the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen she had a china doll porcelain face skin so perfect you can’t even describe it but she would come down and look for me we were all at the bell station because she smokes cigarettes which I couldn’t believe because her skin was so perfect and she would grab me and say come on Larry I want to have a drag LOL so I would go outside with her to keep her company and just talk with her while she smoked her cigarette she did this probably three or four times a day I was a hero to the rest of the Bellman! But truly a beautiful person! And pretty much the same story with The other actress I met Vanessa Williams she also was so unbelievably down to earth I checked her and hung out all of her clothes and we just talked for about 15 minutes very very down to earth and sweet! Oh also Mike Tyson with his bride had just gotten married to his first wife I believe that actress her name escapes me right now? Sorry for being so long-winded I just went down memory lane! But it’s nice meeting superstars that are so down to earth by the way Magic Johnson was probably the nicest superstar ever met

@@DGarica the problem with being addicted to heroin is it make people unreasonable, and dangerous if they don't have money. they are dangerous to their family first. i had to get a restraning order against my brother who relapsed. if he threatens me or harm me financially when i am suffering so much financially, he is a bad person. it is not his faulth asperbergs makes him a bad person but he is dangerous just the same with the combined effect of a personality disorder and drug abuse it makes him dangerous and that is a bad person. the whole thing is crazy. philip seymore hoffman was successful and rich. he did not need to victimize anyone to do drugs. but what he did to his children is so unforgivable.

These drugs are called "mind-altering" for a reason. When the addict is using it, the drug has control over the person, and then you could say that it is a bad person. But if the person inside wrestles control over himself, and quits the drug, then that's a different matter.

But before then, I would quit multiple times for a week or two, tops, before relapsing.) That nervous laughter, the hesitant responses, the "I don't want to make it sound more than it was" (in other words, "nothing to see here, let's move along.") I still remember that awful feeling of lying and being sure I'd be found out -- which, eventually, I was. It never fails. You will never remove drugs. They are a fact of life. They have been around thousands of years. From the first sip of wine, the first cup of mead, the first glass of ale or various herb ground and smoked. Mind altering substances are a part of every culture. The problem is not the substance, the problem is figuring out what it is that drives people to depend on vices because they feel it's all that brings them happiness. I've had clinical depression since I can remember. Some people just aren't happy with life sober. Others haven't found that delicate balance of moderation.

Here’s my humble speculation lol: He was clean on and off but being wealthy and connected as him has advantages and disadvantages when it comes to staying clean. Pros: Access to premium health care and professionals. Cons: Access to premium drugs and connections. Also fame comes with little privacy and much public “worship”. Bad publicity can limit opportunities in acting, which was his passion. Impossible to judge him w/o knowing him. And like with everybody, hard to understand someone fully, even those in your circle. been married (mostly happily) for almost 20 years and still struggle to understand my wife completely and her me.
