Philips Hue Outdoor Lightstrip unboxing.
My DIY installation of the Philips Hue outdoor lightstrips in railway sleepers. Creates a useful border light for our newly gravelled driveway. Hope you find this video useful and inspirational.

Great video. Love the groove idea. Do you think this set up would look ok on a lean to garden pergola ? Joiners are coming next week to build. Only problem is the width of pergola is 3.8 meters so would have slight overhang down the 2 posts

I'm looking at installing an LED strip light like these in my monoblock to light up either side of my drive way. I am guessing that there's absolutely no way these would withstand the weight of a car going over them which I need them to be able to do. Do you have any suggestions as to where I could find a casing they could go in?

This is a cool setup and it looks awesome! I want to do something similar along my driveway, except I think I don't want the cut-out notch to be as deep. I think I want a little of the Lightstrip to stick out of the wood (just the part of the strip that lights up) and I'll keep the white part tucked inside to hold the strip in place. Did you use any adhesives or the mounts to keep the Lightstrips in place? Also, where did you get that weatherproof outlet?
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kosta, thank you for your kind comments. Originally I wanted to use the clips, but it meant that the groove would have been slightly wider, potentially letting water and dust to settle in the gap. No adhesive was used either, it just sits inside. The weatherproof outlet you can get from any good DIY store, rated IP66 (In the UK). Hope this helps.

@@andrewtang7216 Do you think that letting a little water/dust settle in the gap would be a problem? Considering that they're supposed to be weatherproof, I would like to hope that they could withstand a little. Also, in my situation, the position of the wood that will be going down my driveway will allow people to see both sides of the sleepers anytime they're in front of my home. Because of this, I'm considering having the notch cut out on all sides of the wood, but I'm not sure what I'll do with the power cables for all the Lightstrips (I'll probably need 3-4 of the 5-meter Lightstrips to do both sides for my setup). I'm considering cutting the notch even deeper into the wood and running the power cables behind the Lightstrips. One issue I see with this is that I don't know how I'll be able to secure the Lightstrip to the wood if the power cables are behind them. Do you think this would be a bad idea? Philips Hue will be releasing the 100W PSU very soon here in the US, (I'm not sure if it's available in the UK) so I'm planning to buy that and only run 2 PSU, instead of 4.

Dust & water won’t affect the strips as they are sealed. You can still use the clips, but you’ll have to make the groove as wide as the clips Alternatively If the strips are recessed in (more than mine) with a snug fit, you’ll be ok without clips. How you run your power cable depends on where your outlet is going to be located as well as the length of the power cable. It’s not a bad idea running the cable behind, but I would try and keep it as simple as possible for maintenance, especially if you’re considering 3-4 lightstrips. Depending on your driveway, I would use cable trunking and bury the cabling / PSU boxes for a neat, discreet finish. Hope this helps and good luck with your project :)

Andrew - great video - is your Hue bridge inside your home and, if so, do you ever have connection issues? Thanks!
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for viewing the video. Fortunately I don’t have any connectivity issues and turning them on and off is pretty much instant like any other light. Granted the distance from the home to the lights isn’t that far and having quite a few Philips hue products enhances wireless connectivity.

Looks great, I'm very tempted to make some raised beds in the garden with a strip light reseed in a groove. Did you have to cut the groove yourself? If so what did you use to cut it?
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, as you can seen in the video, I actually took the sleepers to a timber merchants. For this particular job, unless you have all the tools at home, I would highly recommend using a local timber merchant due to cost, speed and safety. Gave them the dimensions of the groove, where I wanted it so they could set up their bench and they cut it literally in a minute. Plus it guaranteed that they groove was completely straight. Hope that helps

Nice work. Question, are you using two power packs [transformer] or just one with the lights connected in series? I note the two controller packs are hardwired to the lightstrip.
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I am using the power packs that came with each light hence I have two power supplies. You can change the power unit to the 100w version which allows you to plug both lights into one supply. You cannot daisy chain the light strips like the Philips Hue Lily lights. Hope that answers your question.

How is your dust / moisture connection holding up? I noticed that is the weak point of these Hue lights and am trying to think of a cover or buried waterproofing type of something to keep it from corrosion. Did you ever come up with an additional precaution for this?
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, great question. I haven't moved the power supplies or the light strips, so they've been exposed to the elements for 16 months. We've had a lot of rain and a few cold snaps this winter and surprisingly the lights are holding up really well. Almost like new if I'm honest. I am considering getting the 100w power supply to tidy up the cabling and burying it in the gravel to make it look cleaner. Might do another video to show that and the condition of the existing installation in the near future.

Did both lightstrips have 1-2 inches on the ends that did not light up? Did you replace them? If so, did the replacement(s) have the same issue?
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, unfortunately I didn’t replace it due to the hassle of dismantling the sleepers plus there was the risk of changing it and having an issue with the replacement. Plus the rest of the leds seem to work perfectly especially when changing colours and brightness🤞

@@andrewtang7216I had the same problem with mine not lighting up to the end. Having spoken to the company it’s because the LED string moves inside the silicone housing and the way it’s coiled in the box makes the housing longer than the LED. If you coil it tightly the opposite direction to how it was packed and leave it for an hour or so it will stretch it the other way and it will illuminate to the end.

Just ordered 10 metres {2x 5m) of this flex cable for around my garden. My problem is wiring it all up from the outside socket. . Do i need an extension or extended electric cable for the led plug from the socket. and is it ok bein outside along with the receiver? Or is best put it all in a box? Thanks
@andrewtang7216
@andrewtang7216 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, the led plug itself should be put into an ip66 weatherproof outdoor socket housing for safety. Whether you need to extend it depends on how far you want the lights to be from your home. I’m (un)fortunate to have a socket close enough to keep my project relatively simple. But Like most things, it’s all about preparation. Plan ahead and see what’s required and take it from there. Apart from that, the receiver and power brick are ip67, so they can be uncovered and stay out in the elements. I hope that helps
@Mike-tm2tx
@Mike-tm2tx 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewtang7216 yeah. I'm not sure if my receiver is waterproof. So I'm gonna get an outdoor electric box for it all to go in and use extend electric cable from the outdoor socket. As where I'm placing the strip is 3 metres away from the outdoor socket :/ lol

hi, could you see if those lights work with the sync app with video function? you can do it from a pc by downloading the application. I want to buy one for the tv. I found a 6.6 feet perfect size for my tv. but I don't know if it has that function with the hue sync app from the pc (you must create an entertainment area from the phone). there is no video. no information about that on the internet. could you help me trying? I know there are some strips of this type for tv, but they are very expensive and are sold out everywhere. there are only resellers
@andrewtang7216

Thank you for you for this great question. From briefly setting it up Hue Sync on MacOS (you do need the mobile version of Hue App too for linking and setup as well as access to the Philips Hue Bridge 2.0) it works and response time looks pretty good (from what I can tell). But remember, it only changes colour to whatever is on the screen that the sync app is running on. In a nutshell, it’s works. The Lightstrip can only change one colour at a time , so if you want a more immersive experience, perhaps have some of the Philips Hue Colour bulbs in the room as well for added affect. Hope this helps.
