Hi, nice video. I used to own the bigger version of this one, (N4506), and I loved that deck. I was an audiophile from about 1980 to 1990, and built a pretty large, expensive, component system. I all but gave it all away via pawn shops as a result of a divorce in 1991. The only thing I kept and somehow managed to take especially good care of, (even when I wasn't taking good care of myself), was the collection of (12) - 7" Reel to Reel tapes that I created in many hours worth of recording sessions. They're truly one of a kind and I almost still can't believe I kept them all in an AC environment no matter where I was. About 1-1/2 years ago, I bought a descent Akai 4000DS MK II deck on eBay. It was in beautiful condition but I still knew I would need to clean up all the interior electronics and replace the belts. Of course, cleaning and demagnetizing the heads is a given, (I do that with every record/play session or every 4 hours, which ever comes first). Anyway, when I put one of the reels on it and played it, I was instantly transported to 1982, (I was 26 then), and I'm now carefully digitizing each tape. It'll take some time and I'm thinking about buying a better deck. I know there's just about no way to get another Philips N4506, they just aren't out there. So I'm looking at Teac or a higher end Akai, maybe a Pioneer RT909, etc. I'd love to get a Tanberg but if I can find one, I'd have to get a second mortgage on the house. If you happen on a descent Reel to Reel deck that you want to sell, let me know! I have your email address from the video, (I don't know if it still good, but I'll try it). and I'll probably send a copy of this post to you that way as well. Thanks, Rich

Yes, it was a good video. I did the same job but on my 4506 back when I had it. I never did send an email because I forgot. I was searching for a deck and last Thursday or Friday, I happened to open eBay 5 minutes after a seller posted an ad to sell his pristine Tascam 32. He put it up for auction but had a "Buy Now" price which was only $70.00 more than the auction's starting bid. The deck was in such great shape and he made 3 videos that showed the heads very clearly and up close, (they were perfect). The sound of the deck and its mechanisms were super quiet and I knew that it would never make it through the auction. Someone would buy it way before then. The starting bid was $290. and the Buy now was $360. He wasn't very familiar with eBay selling as you can tell by the way he posted the auction and buy-now prices so close to the same. The Tascam 42 would have been my preference but the two I could find had a $1400. minimum price tag. This 32 looks like it came right off the store shelf and I couldn't pass it up. He shipped it yesterday including some new tape and two 10.5" metal reels. I hope to have it by Friday. Thanks, Rich

Enjoyed your recollections and feel the same about the old reel to reel machines. I sold the Sony 630 and the 377, but perhaps should have had them restored. The N4422 I have now needs servicing, but dont want to take it too far away from Birmingham UK to get done. Any ideas?

Excellent video. You made it look easy, but expect it doesn't always go so well, particularly if more work is needed on old greased parts. I have the Philips N4422 that I am offering for sale now, but it does need new belts and a good service. I bought it new with a 'Sprocketmaster' attached in my old fil making days. Have loads of tapes with some great music, but nothing to play them on. It crossed my mind to restore the machine (not me but through a good service engineer) but may be put off by the cost of that. It was a great machine but may cost more than I would want to pay. I also dont know of a service engineer in the Midlands of the UK (unless you do?) Thanks again. Malcolm

Hey Malcom, its hard to tell the cost some shops are super expensive and charge by the hour plus parts so even a 5 minute job gets billed as a full hour. I would try to search local classifieds to see if there is someone out there or post on a facebook group possibly a local one looking for someone to repair it someone might know someone near you that can help with it. Since I am in Canada its a bit hard to tell who would be good tho as I don't recommend anyone for jobs like that unless I personally know them and know their work. Help is out there just toss up a few ads around on local sites and see what comes of it lots of guys doing it for hobby as well. Best of luck and hope you get it going again.

Hi gamer. Really liked your videos and they are helping us fit our player. Found loads of sticky belts what's the best product to use to clean the reels please? Do you have any tips on how to clean the heads any other tips you have will be appreciated.

I have one of these decks... the problem is that the tape slides off the transport near the pressure pad constantly. If I add pressure with my finger up towards the tape, it stays in place, but the pressure I apply is way too much to have it playback properly anyway. Any idea what the problem may be? Is there a place to get a replacement pressure pad? thanks in advance.

I would probably at this point make sure power is properly getting to the motor with a multi-meter to see if it is the motor or if something down the line. is it completely seized up? no manual rotation?

Not sure I would just run a string around them and then measure the distance around them and then get a belt that is smaller but close to it the belt I used was just one I had laying around from a jukebox that stretched to the right size 4 years later its still working great.
