Great video Colin I love these old philips N1502 vcrs I have several of them myself and the n1700 not all in working order though I get ideas on how to get them running from seeing you work on them you certainly know your stuff

Same here. The last time I ran them the mechanical transport mech was OK but the sync was out. I have a manual somewhere so I must have another go. Thanks for the video.

These green and violet bars appears in some recordings but not in all in my Grundig SVR4004. I've checked chrominance bars oscillators and looks be right. I haven't found the cause. Service manual in German, is a handycap to understand what it says. Edit: Violet and green bars problem solved in my Grundig SVR4004. It was caused by a disajustment in R1811 that caused Chroma 562,5Khz signal from Head Amp were not enough sinal for to feature chrominance properly. So, in your N1502, I think the problem must be similar, Chroma signal from Head must be attenuates or have any problem. I'm almost sure that 562,5Khz level is low, bad adjusted or any electronic failure.

Using a scrap machine to fix a scrap machine! Lucky that you have so many spares, I have an N1500 that took many hours to get working properly, but I was lucky enough to pick up another machine complete with 27 tapes!

Yet more machines were involved in part 2 of this video! I have several N1500 machines without video heads, I'll probably never work on them so if you need more spares you can have them for a very reasonable figure. Couriers are not expensive. Many thanks, I will certainly contact you if I require any parts that I do not have. I do have a couple of N1700 machines, but both require heads, I very much doubt I will be able to source any though!@@video99couk

I used to have an N1702 that I kept running in the 1990s until I emigrated from the Netherlands to the USA (nice to see your Dutch tape by the way). It was always fun to work on. Everything is so accessible! I don't think I've ever seen a 1502 but I had a 1500 with broken heads that never worked. From the looks of it, the 1502 is much more similar to the 1702 than the 1500. I'm going to guess that the vertical line has something to do with either interference or with the PAL delay line. I'm by no means an expert (I'm more into digital electronics) but it would seem pretty obvious that it can't possibly be caused by the mechanics, the heads, the FM circuitry or the color mod/demod.

Yes the N1502 is closer to the N1700, but the N1501 is closer to the N1500.

That machine was an utter basket case, so many bad parts.:-( I think you did amazingly well with it :-D The second you pressed play the typical phillips stripey ribbon appeared on the screen, i thought hmm the f.m demod and dropout detector works :-D I had a front loader vhs that had the nightmare video heads that were clamped to the shaft, (philips machine). it gave the same demod and dropout ribbon display as the n1500. I had a broken vhs too, i took the f.m demod board and turned it into a stand alone unit with r.f modulator, handy for checking the state of any f.m output. No colour as i didn't have that bit lol. Yes it was a bodge, but good fun lol.

I can tell you that I have fixed the colour fault. And then had other issues....

Brilliant video tutorial on the faults on the N1502s. Definitely a preferable model to the N1500. Illuminated my current knowledge of this model. Still more I want to know on these, plus how to put in the AV outputs, as opposed to just using the RF.. Thanks as always for your great videos. P.S: Saw the Colin Baker Dr Who tape, but was interested in the Top Of The Pops, do you still have any old Top Of The Pops 70s editions there..? Cheers, Paul

Found it amusing to see a recording of Doctor Who at 35:55 -- is it a genuine off-air from 1985? I remember using a borrowed N1x00 machine as a kid in 1984 to record Doctor Who off-air while away and the format was long in the tooth then so to see a surviving N1500 off-air from 1985 is quite fun.

Not one accurate enough to measure if the frequency was just a tiny bit out. Only the TDS3012. But a quick tweak was good enough to make sure that it wasn't the cause of the problem. The diagrams are not the best, either. I have now resolved the colour problems but other unrelated issues arose!

The VCR format never got beyond prototypes for NTSC even though some of the tapes were made in USA.

Hi many thanks i guess most of the decks are all the same despite re-badging and front panel button setups i have several different types i can look at thinking about it maybe it's the pinch roller i can swap one around good project i think i have got a rare animal all the very best many thanks for your email re itt 674 tape damage take care Rob

If you've already replaced all the belts, I would expect sticking levers underneath and on top of the deck. See my videos about a Toshiba mechanical VCR which had similar problems.

The colour noise in the picture looks like a bad RF out modulator.

hi watch the video 100% funny thing i am working on a tascam 38 -34 reel to reel deck i am doing the same as you moving parts around the deck i had the same make you are working on it takes alot of time just to find what is bad dry solder can be a right pain as it stop parts working right the older reel to reel are better no IC'S in the transport logic i wait and see what you pull out of the hat next fix

I had a Tascam 52 tape deck but had to replace it when it suffered some breakdowns which (at the time) I didn't have enough room to work on. I do miss that lovely machine.
