Andy Phillips shows how to remove air from a power steering system on a vehicle without a bleeder valve. Trapped air can cause the power steering to make a whining noise, and potentially cause damage.

After pulling the power steering pump out to replace the a/c compressor on my 2003 Tacoma and installing the power steering pump back on it just would not work like it was suppose to, but after watching your video and you mention that it took you at least 20 minutes I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. Other videos did not mention it could take that long, so that part helped a lot.

Thank you so much! I took my ford Taurus into shop to replace serpentine belt. The shop did not put any flyids back in my car, let alone bleed. They were so ugly to me and told me they didn't do engine work and i was looking at at least $500 just for labor. My car has just been sitting because they got $2,000 almost for the belt and back brakes. I was so discouraged that i couldn't even drive my car and now i was going to save up more money for a new ps pump, hoses, etc. im going to tey this this week and pray it works. My mind has hust been baffled. I didn't know what i was going to do. So......thank you so much for posting and all of the replys!!!!!

THANK YOU! I just replaced my power steering pump but it's hard to steer. I wasn't sure about the bubbles coming up from the reservoir. The two videos I watched that helped me do the replacement for my particular make and model did not cover this little detail. They just showed hooking everything up and topping up the fluid. This video tops off those two and shows me what I need to do. Thanks again! Good job!

I see movement on the reservoir when car is idle and steering ir hard when parking only, maybe those are bubbles and is the oil movement to be expected? I thought it was because oil was circulating

Thanks. Fluid dropped down on the belts, so after I tightened the screw on the power steering upper tube line, I just had to get the air out from the system. It worked great the way you recommended it - moving the steering from left to right ✅ Thanks so much.

Thanks for the education ! I started hearing the sound and the smell a little bit ago. I had an estimate for the air conditioning. It has not been working from day one. The price was too high. I knew something was wrong because of the sound. They indicated the power steering fluid was low. I was not going to take my car to have someone fix it. So I found your video. Followed your instructions. Now my car is running perfectly. When I bought my car I decided to take care of more issues by myself . I am having a tremendously fun time. I am grateful for your help! Also I found someone who is fixing the air conditioning for one third of the cost. Proactive!

Great vid showing a simple technique that works. One thing I would suggest... when doing this, jack the front up a little, just enough to get the tyres off the ground by only an inch, and maybe put a block or bricks underneath, this way going back and forward turning the steering wont tear the crap out of your tyres, and it lessons the strain on the power steering pump too !! 👍

Very Good suggestion i did this once with my car and i was not aware that I had a silence but deadly ball joint and the excess strain on my suspension from doing this on the asphalt caused my ballpoint to break when i moved the car 10 ft after bleeding the power steering and my axel fell out. Good thing i was in my driveway

Worked great on my 2003 Chevy, I tried factory method, 5 other methods, none worked. Your method worked because of doing it with the truck running and the cap off and the length of time, you mentioned that it could take 20-30 minutes which is exactly what it took mine to finally bleed all air out. I did however, raise the front off the ground which is important to help save your suspension, tires and steering components if doing it for 20-30 minutes.

I did similar except that I had my front wheels off the ground with jacks, better than getting flat spots on my front tires from sitting in one spot turning and turning right to left while not moving. From time to time I used to remove cap and in an empty parking lot I would find a spot to turn all the way one way and then all the way the other way before I came up with the simply jack it up idea. If you're ever going to blow a power steering hose it will be when you're turning the wheels while not moving.

Just an FYI if you’re getting air in your power steering lines just getting the air out is usually only a temporary fix. The most common reason for air in the line is bad o rings. If you want to solve the problem those bad o rings will need to be replaced, or it will just continue to happen.

Can someone please let me know if it's normal when doing this for the whining to get louder at first? Changed the pump on my 03 audi a6 and it was still whining really bad. I know it's air in the lines but I'm turning the wheel and checking fluid and it is foaming and really big air pockets coming out so I know for sure air is coming out but it gets louder and louder at like 5 full turns and I get nervous and stop. I just bought jack stands to get the wheels off the ground and am going home to try again but hope to get advice on this first! I would hate to blow a brand new pump! Audi is expensive and SO hard to fix at home on my own. I'm a woman and I get it done but I'm very nervous over this. A quart of the required fluid for an audi is 60 bucks a quart. I don't wanna be throwing away money!
