In this video I share the ORIGIN of both the PHILLY SHELL fighting style as well as the name. I trace the style of the "PHILLY SHELL" back to the GYM "RAT", those guys who would walk into gyms and spar with world champions and beat up on many of them. I point out that the style itself DID NOT originate from PROFESSIONAL BOXERS, rather than from GYM FIGHTERS who had little to no desire to BOX PROFESSIONALLY. I also trace the name "PHILLY SHELL" back to "SWEET" GEORGE BENTON. Benton was the true master of the style and does not get enough credit for being such.
Enjoy, S

so true, i remember seeing brothers in hartford boxing pros and winning. I use to ask how many pro fights you got they say thats not for me.They said it was fun for them and they like to let off some steam. They say boxing is dirty business. In bjj gyms u got wrestlers who learn some submissions and defense to submissions who roll with purple and brown belts and win lol but they r still whitebelts because they hate training in a gi. Some people dont care about titles just techniques it seems.

Thanks for this! It aligns exactly with the history lessons I got from Al Certo at Buffano’s gym 30 yrs ago. It is interesting to see people who don’t sit at the feet of elders to learn history assuming that everything (with a new name) is new. The 20’s and 30’s are an interesting period in combat sports. Bare knuckle transitioning to gloves.... real Catch wrestling transitioning to worked or pre-WWF. Anyways... appreciate you and the knowledge you’re dropping.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp that place was as old school as it gets. I miss that type of training environment! Don’t miss that funky bathroom though. LOL Keep up the great work, brother. It’s important to know history, especially in an age where people seem to think everything is “new”. We see this in BJJ circles where something CACC wrestlers were doing over 100 years ago, was supposedly invented in Rio 40 years ago. 😉

Osu sensei! Always love your history of boxing videos! Just a thought, have you ever considered writing a book on the history of boxing? Like a people’s history of boxing? No doubt if you would ever, it would contain all sorts of fair and objective insights and give boxers who are no longer not with us, their much deserved dues. Big up from the uk!

Maestre, Asalaam alaikum. Would you say that the Leonard vs. Sr. fight in '78 is a great way of showing how a tough " Philly " can be " cracked " ? Nuff respect to you always. Stay safe.

Wa Alaikum Musalaam, Ray did crack SR defense by being relentless. Not every one can do that though. You risk getting hit.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp , True..... Yet Senior's amateur record was 28-6-1. Leonard's: 165-5. Senior's amateur achievements: U. S. Championship Tournament in '77. Leonard's: Two time National Golden Gloves , Gold medal Pan American and Gold medalist at the Olympics on 73, 74, 75 and 76 respectively. I say all this for those on the Internet who troll and might trumpet Jr.'s accomplishments without taking in FULL account of what solid boxing truly is. Thank you for allowing me to vent. No disrespect meant if I come off as such, Maestre.

What about black code boxing? I hear there was a specific style of boxing coming from the black code boxing and that the Philly Shelly has rootes in that..

Thomas Clark: I think I know what you are talking about, but I want to be sure. Do you mean certain black fighters?
@TheUmmahFightCamp
@TheUmmahFightCamp 3 жыл бұрын
Thomas Clark: That sounds good, but some white fighters like Tony Cazoneri and Lou Ambers fought the same way. I think it is enough to know and have some of the greatest fighters in history be black. No one can deny that and no, Tyson Fury is NOT great because he beat an old Klitchko and Wilder. That said, the style of fighting I speak of was used by a few whites also.

Floyd Mayweather calls it the Mayweather defense because he says he mastered it.

Curtis Maul: Floyd is not the best modern master of it anyway. James Toney is.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp I agree with you Sayf 100% but Floyd Mayweather fanatics and not surprisingly even himself would beg to differ because they will go by the sheer fact that Floyd Mayweather is undefeated and James Toney isnt therefore Mayweathers philly Shell must be superior that's the logic they would go by. To casual fans especially teenagers they would most associate the Philly Shell defence with Floyd Mayweather because that's all they have known and seen.And I see these same teenagers in the street all the time trying to copy Floyd Mayweather trying to use the Philly Shell most if not all of them do the same thing they even shake their heads like he does when their opponent misses I cant help but laugh.lol

@@curtismaul2552 First, here are the facts: Floyd DID lose ONE fight! Castillo BEAT him in their first fight! Floyd was given that match. Next, James Toney moved up to heavyweight from Middle weight! 40 damn pounds! For Floyd to match that jump, he would have had to WIN the 168 pound title. The people saying floyd's philly shell was superior should not be allowed to comment on boxing. They do not know what it is and could not use it under real pressure. Done.
