Prof. Matthew David Segall (@Footnotes2Plato) explains how nature needs to be reframed as being alive and organic. Drawing from the metaphysical frameworks of Whitehead and Schelling, this perspective stands in stark contrast to the lifeless, mechanistic outlook imbued by Descartes, Newton, and modernity.

I think you’d really enjoy the book “The Spell of the Sensuous” by David Abram. He’s an ecologist, philosopher, and slight-of-hand magician whose work draws from indigenous magicians and the phenomenology of perception in relationship to the external world. It’s very much about taking apart the conventional “nature as opposed to humanity” binary, but from a VERY different angle than most other work that I’ve seen. Like, he he uses Merleau-Ponty to argue for a sort of animism (not a woo-woo hippie kind haha). It’s kind of insane and wonderful. David might even be worth interviewing if you’re interested, I think he’s still actively talking about his work online. Also, on the topic of Gaia, Žižek really openly hates that metaphor. In a lot of his lectures he inevitably breaks out his same old joke, something like “well if the earth is our mother, than our mother is a stinking b*tch” or whatever. It’s a little much, but that’s Žižek for you lol
