Professor Dan Robinson gives the first in a series of 8 lectures on Thomas Reid's critique of David Hume at Oxford in 2014. Hume defends the thesis according to which “ALL THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE HUMAN MIND RESOLVE THEMSELVES INTO…IMPRESSIONS AND IDEAS”. Accordingly, “We may prosecute this enquiry to what length we please; where we shall always find, that every idea which we examine is copied from a similar impression”.
Under “David Hume”, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins with, “The most important philosopher ever to write in English”. His most formidable contemporary critic was the fellow Scot, Thomas Reid, the major architect of so-called Scottish Common Sense Philosophy. The most significant features of Hume’s work, as understood by Reid, are the representive theory of perception, the nature of causation and causal concepts, the nature of personal identity and the foundations of morality. Each of these topics is presented in a pair of lectures, the first summarizing Hume’s position and the second Reid’s critique of that position.

Direct experience or subject experience/ knowledge would seem to be a winning formula. The modern equivalent would appear to be thomas campbell author of my big toe.

Reflections path In the realm of self-discovery, I shall embark, To fathom the depths of consciousness, so stark. As campbell wandered through nature's grace, I too shall explore the innermost space. Behold! The path that leads to truth untold, Where the self unfolds, a story yet bold. With every step, the layers peel away, Revealing insights, casting shadows at bay. In solitude's embrace, I delve within, To fathom the essence that lies therein. The whispering winds guide my introspection, As I seek unity, the ultimate connection. I delve into the recesses of my soul, Where hidden gems of wisdom find their role. Through introspection's lens, I gaze and ponder, Unearthing truths, the universe to wander. The self, a prism, reflects the cosmic dance, I merge with the cosmos, in a cosmic trance. With open eyes, I perceive the interplay, Between self and world, in harmony's sway. As campbell spoke of the vast and the minute, I too explore the cosmic fabric, resolute. The self as a vessel, a portal to comprehend, The tapestry of existence, from end to end. Through self-discovery's voyage, I am led, To realms unexplored, where truth lies widespread. With each revelation, my spirit expands, Embracing the universe in my humble hands. So let us wander, seekers on this earthly plane, In self-discovery's quest, never in vain. For in understanding the self, we find the key, To unravel the mysteries of reality's decree. In thamas Campbells spirit, I explore and roam, Self-discovery as the path to call my own. With every step, a new horizon unfolds, And the broader aspects of life, my soul beholds.

I hope the audio dropouts aren't a staple for such a valuable series, I fear in future even comprehension let alone enjoyment won't be possible.

Well hold on, you say that the intellect is present to the senses due to its perceived influence upon opinion and discourse. You have a starting point RIGHT THERE!

Fun to watch, but could you expand on the manner by which, the love of a mother for her newborn is mediated by a sub atomic corpuscle?
