Coming from an Applied psychologist myself, who currently works in a psychiatric hospital, I can assure you that psychiatry and psychology are two completely different fields. Psychiatry, does not deal with behaviour and cognitions in it's intervention. Psychiatrists use psychotropic medication to alleviate any mental health difficulties and symptoms. Psychologists use interventions that focus on peoples' cognitions and behaviours to alleviate mental health difficulties through talking therapies, but it is a completely different field to psychiatry. Just because it deals with behaviours and cognition, it also does not make it 'medical'. @@Uwa99

hi phil! glad to come across your channel. Just wanted to ask you regarding the career switch to be a psychologist. I am currently working as an engagement associate at The executive centre. My day to day task consist of liasing with clients and building rapport. However, things changed after i came across multiple articles about psychology , which builds the sense of interest for me to pursue psychology as my future career prospect. However i am currently caught in the midst of a social dilemma. In order for me to pursue psychology, i have to return to college since my major in college was business administration management. Knowing that i have to work the 9-5 job, i can only resort to studying as a part time student. In your opinion, is it okay to pursue part time education in psychology, what would be the tough challenges intellectually if i am juggling work and school and how do i brace through it. Do give me some advices and i believe that you are the ideal person who could save me from this conundrum. Take care and god bless you always brother!

Hello thank you for this question! Yes, I've known several people who have gone back to school and worked full time to get their psychology degree. Just so you know depending on what credits you have to take, some graduate schools will accept students regardless of if they have finished the prerequisites and work with them in the program to finish certain classes so you can also contact schools to see if that is an option depending on if you have a few classes you need to take to fulfill the prerequisites. But otherwise working and part-time classes is doable especially depending on time-management skills. I have a few videos on this if you'd like to check out that could help with time management. I hope that helps, best of luck! :)

hi phil i am a masters level psychologist in MI but relocated to NJ. Its been a journey. I wanted to ask you about the salary ranges that youre referencing - 60k $ is very low for a (sport) psychologist, and school psychologist / in any state of the US. I have heard that in the western states they pay very well upwards of 90 k ^, but here in NJ I thought 100 k was low !! so please enlighten me what states/salary ranges youre familiar with ? would you say the gross average pay in the US has vast plummeted ? I believe most psychologists should be comfortably making 90k and up after licensing - lmk what you think
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 11 ай бұрын
Hi, yes great question! I believe the article that I posted was a bit outdated, I'll be doing an update soon for the salary ranges. 90k for psychologists is more realistic, but as you mention if you live in a state like NJ, NY, California, or other west coast states it'll be more due to cost of living. The sports psychology range is a little complicated because some sport psychologists work part-time or have a consulting business so they may not be full-time seeing clients, I think that's why the range is low because it's not considering part-time sports psychologists. Full-time the range can be large. For example, I spoke with a sports psychologist who works with a professional NBA team and her salary is well above 60k, so it depends who and where you work. A sports psychologist working for a small collegiate team (div 3) may expect to make less than a sport psychologist working for a div 1 team or a professional team, or with olympic athletes. So in the end, it really just depend where you work (what state you live in) and who you work for, but typically salary ranges are increasing for psychologists because of the demand so that is something to take comfort in. Hope that was helpful!

Hello Phil I'm from India, currently pursuing bachelors in psychology from India and i wanna become a clinical psychologist.. Neuropsychology also fascinates me a lot. But I am little bit sceptical about the scope of clinical neuropsychology in future. As we all know they're specialized in brain behavior relationships and most important work they do is conducting comprehensive neuropsychological assessments... But is there any threat to this profession with the advancement of neuroimaging techniques.. I mean will neuroimaging techniques (fMRI) replace these assessments in future... And I really don't know how can these imaging techniques quantify cognitive abilities so i guess our assessments will still serve a purpose in understanding how a person is exactly functioning in his daily life.. I have one more question that are neuropsychologists trained in neuroimaging.. Because in India this field is in its infancy.
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 2 жыл бұрын
Hi great question. I’ve talked with many neuropsychologists about the advancement of technology in the field. Many of them actually are excited for the future regarding these advancements. It might cut down the amount of time that a clinician has to analyze the results which means they may be able to see more clients, also the only people qualified to use that type of technology would be neuropsychologists which could make the profession more money due to the accuracy and precision of the technology. There will always be fundamental tests and assessments that will be reserved for neuropsychologists that probably will not go away due to the strength of validity and reliability in diagnoses such as ADHD or dementia
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 2 жыл бұрын
And your other question regarding neuro imaging depends on the setting of where the neuropsychologist is trained. I personally haven’t seen training of this but I could be wrong. Hope that helps!

Hi, great question! Yes, clinical psychologists have a phd/psyd which means they are considered doctors, but they are not medical doctors, meaning, they can't prescribe medication. They can teach, do research, consult, own their own private practice, do therapy, and in some states with additional certification possibly prescribe medication but it depends on the location, the state, and the law/regulation. Opportunities for private practice are common as well. Hope that clarifies, best of luck!

Most of the time it would be physicians that would ask for mri or ct scans. The tests that neuropsychologists give don’t require that info although it may be helpful for a diagnosis like a head trauma

@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
Hi, great question! It's possible but it would def be a lot of time. 6-8 years to become a clinical psychologist after college and then another 8-10 years to become a psychiatrist. Most people become a psychologist and then do a masters in psychopharmacology, which allows them to prescribe medication. This is 2 years after the 6-8 years of the Phd/Psyd in clinical psychology. That way the psychologist can almost essentially do all the same things that the psychiatrist can do.

Yeah great question, it sounds like you might be able to obtain a lot of forensic psychology experience if you wanted to go into that specialization? I believe a lot of neuropsychology deals a lot too with mental health in the courtroom if that might also be another career field to go into. You're right though there are so many options, I know students who have also spent a lot of time in the APA specialty site looking over internships and the types of work experience that placements offered to narrow it down. Hope that helps, good luck!

Hi, I'm not sure about the international process to working here in the U.S. Sometimes they require international psychologists to take additional courses or take the licensure, EPPP to be licensed in the states. Talking with some U.S. programs about transfer of credits might help to see if you are a candidate for licensure in the U.S. Hope that's helpful, and best for luck

Yeah doing this is validation of your success and knowledge. Why on earth would you be a care giver for the money you can make by doing it. That's not care at all. A 600 an hour ER doctor is a raping of another for having knowledge gained by many existing and those who have past. It is a gift not a leverage point. All people have the same value but that can never be realized if privilege is accepted by the gifted. It is not a reality of the human condition its a manipulation for even greater injustice to be distributed in gains for small minded men of domination and control. I can see what you cannot a sweet life can only be had if the actions of those oppressed can be avoided. The odds are growing. We seem to rather buy the time of someone to not have to say thank you. We would rather the social ladder we adopted 7 million years ago when the animals were our only model. Peeing on things is not an evolved technique in social order. 7 mil is long enough to get over our beginnings. It is clear what some tolerate some fully engage some accept as our reality is detrimental to our species leave it for the animals.
