Could you do a video about how a Master’s in Counseling before a PhD/PsyD in Clinical Psych might improve/not improve one’s chances of getting into a doctoral program?
@FREETHEGOD22

It can be a harder leap, you’re competing with Masters level clinicians with research experience. It is possible but you would have to have an impressive undergrad track. You will also have to do more hours if you skip the masters.

Hi! Thanks so much for this incredible analysis. I am coming from an Applied Behavior Analytic background and I’m trying to decide which path to follow. I’d like to continue working with the IDD population. I’d like to gain as much knowledge as possible; the more I know, the better I serve and maximize the benefits of my clients. How did you decide which path to take?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Ай бұрын
I shadowed a lot of clinicians, and did a lot of research between counseling/vs clinical. For me it came down to fit, what I wanted to do in my career, the courses given, and the type of clinician I wanted to be. After shadowing professionals I liked, I pretty much decided to go down the same path they went down because I enjoyed seeing what they did, so shadowing and "interviewing" a lot of different type of clinicians helped a lot.

Pretty good explanation, thanks! I'm from a non-psych background, could you do one on people bridging from a non-psych undergrad going either the counselling or clinical route? And could you do a visual flow chart or tree diagram that showcases different branches for each of counselling or clinical routes, ex. what leads to various specialties like neuroscience, health psych, addictions, ptsd, etc?

I did masters in counselling and have an undergrad in psychology, and is currently a licensed counsellor, but planning to apply to a neuropsychology program, what recommendations could you give to someone like me to improve my chances of getting accepted into a neuropsychology program? (become a research assistant etc.?)

Hey :) thanks for that video! Do you know what would be the best path for a masters degree if you want to become a psychotherapist? I hear different things about clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family Therapie and clinical social worker. What are the main differences and what would be the best path? Maybe you know more about that and could help me with that!

Hey great questions! I posted this video not along that might help and clarify kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8pyZal8zaeVdKM.html :) At the end of the day all those fileds do the same thing but they specialize in certain areas, for example clinical mental health counseling specialize in one-on-one therapy, marriage and family therapy has a speciality in working with couples and families, and social workers often can work in a more broad range of settings that involve for example like working in the hospital since they are trained and specialized in understanding how systems affects client's mental health so at the end of the day it just depends on what you would prefer to learn more about and specialize in but all three of those fields can see the same patients, clients, and work in the same settings even though the programs are slightly different. Hope that answers your question.

If I want to become a clinical psychologist (I want a close relationship w/ patients & to be able to do assessments & diagnose especially in autism & neurodivergence).. would it make more sense to get an MS in Psychology or an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (maybe with emphasis on MFT) if my ultimate goal is to get PsyD or PhD?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 5 ай бұрын
Either option can serve two different purposes. The first could be more tailored to research and the second more so towards clinical practice. Depending on your end goal it might depend which you favor more - research or clinical practice and what you see yourself doing after your degree. Hope that helps!

For someone who wants to specialize in psychedelic-assisted therapy, which degree would you recommend pursuing?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
Also a good question, both counseling/clinical treat similar conditions and have the same licensures so it may be more about the program than it is about choosing clinical/counseling. If you find the right doctoral program that offers therapy and maybe opportunities to engage in a type of psychedelic research/therapy/practice or a faculty member at a school that is interested in the same topic that might be helpful to look into that program. You could also look through each programs coursework to see if they offer more in-depth discussions/curriculum/seminars etc. on psychedelic-assisted therapy to help with your decision. Best of luck!

I’m graduating with a Masters in Counseling and obtaining my LPC however I have been thinking about going into counseling psychology. Am I able to work full time as an LPC while going through a doctoral counseling psychology program?
@philsguidetopsyd

I'v heard of students working part-time, but it might be difficult to work full time and be a full time student. Typically the doctoral programs are like a full-time job in its own. Hope that helps.

Thank you for this great explanation ! I just have a quick question please, does MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling means Both Clinical & Counseling psychology ? I would like to become a clinical psychologist, so do you recommend this program to me ? I will appreciate your help.
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 ай бұрын
Not quite, a MA in clinical mental health is probably a masters that helps students sit for a masters licensure as a therapist whether LPC, LPCC, or LCC depending on the state. In other words its a masters to become a licensed professional counselor/therapist. While the clinical/counseling psychology masters typically is geared for future clinical and counseling psychologists in the Phd/PsyD level. This depends on the program so I would ask the schools specifically what their degree is for. If wanting to become a clinical psychologists you could look into APA accredited clinical psychology programs PhD or PsyD and if they are accredited there is a good chance they will have what you are looking for.

Hey, I am interested in forensic psychology. I have my BS in Criminal Justice and would love to work in the jails , prisons, detention centers, the courts , and maybe even schools. Would you go with a masters in forensic mental health counseling or straight to PHD forensic psychology?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 11 ай бұрын
Great question!! It depends on what you want to do with your degree. PhD in forensics psychology would take more time and tends to include more debt from student loans, but the options are vast in what you can do (consulting, teaching, research, and TESTING etc.) however if you just want to niche yourself as a forensic therapist then a 2 year masters is a great way to specialize and work in forensic settings. The PhD is helpful for consulting/research purposes and potentially higher pay but the masters is great if you're just looking to focus on therapy. One thing to note about getting a PhD is that the education involves assessment, evaluation, testing, and psychodiagnostic testing involving personality behaviors, neuropsychological dysfunction, or behavioral issues and primarily phd/psyd programs tend to educate students more on the testiing/assessment than mental health counseling schools. At the end of the day, if you pinpoint what you know you want to do for a career you can work backwards and choose the degree/education that will get you there. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a message on my website. philsarpong.com/personal-training-fitness-specialty-client-faqs/

Hi, how is the math in clinical psychology? Not crazy about math, I don't want that to hender me. Are their a lot of math involved?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 2 ай бұрын
Good question! It really depends on the program, PhD programs tend to have more stats classes, but it also just depends on the program. I hated math but with a bit of help from cohort members, and a good Teaching Assistant I got by. If you've taken stats courses in college it's similar to that

Is there any maths & statistics typically involved in a psyd/PhD which would you reccomend for someone who hates maths
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 7 ай бұрын
This is a tough question, it depends more so on the program itself. Typically PhD have more statistic classes, but PsyD programs can have just as much math as PhD. The best bet is to ask current students about the program and how difficult the stats courses are. Usually each program has several resources, tutoring, and mentorship to help students too. I hope that helps.

Do you know what degrees would be best for becoming a psychotherapist in the state of Florida??
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the letters needed for becoming a psychotherapist in Florida. LPC, LPCC, LCPC, LCC, or LMHC are a few names that it could go by in terms of becoming a licensed psychotherapist but typically any psychological, biological, or social sciences degree could meet program school requirements. If unsure you could reach out to the program you're looking to apply to and ask them directly about majors or college degrees that would be helpful. Then you just want to make sure the school program prepares you for whatever state licensure requirements are needed to become a licensed clinician in Florida. They should also have that info on the school's website. Best of luck!

Can i do clinical Psychology or neuro psychology after finishing my m.a in counseling psychology?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
Each program typically has some requirements before students apply like finishing their bachelors, taking a test, having a minimum GPA, letter of recommendation, and personal statement before applying. There are some international schools outside the U.S. who might require a masters. But typically in the U.S. many students get accepted to phd/psy.d programs after their bachelor's degree so you might be eligible based on where you live and how many requirements you've fulfilled on the application. If unsure each school should have those requirements on their website. Hope that's helpful!
