This one is kind of a big deal. I announced on my Instagram a couple of months ago that I was no longer a New Balance Athlete, no longer part of the Pro team I’d been with, and no longer with my old coach. Today I feel ready to talk about it a little more and give you an insight into why I’m not a Pro athlete anymore, and what this means for my running career.

As much as this decision was the right one for me and I feel that to my core, I was still very apprehensive about sharing this and talking as candidly as I can about the situation, both in terms of the reaction of the wider running industry (brands, old wigs, etc) and this community too. If I thought I had anything to worry about in that regard, last night (the Night of the 10,000m PBs) absolutely blew that out the water. The SUPPORT from the running community, people who watch and support this channel, and just the sheer people-power behind me and the whole event was on another level. I'm truly so fortunate to get to do this sport, whatever form that should take

I had a dream to become a doctor which I absolutely romanticised. I achieved it and was training to become an older adult psychiatrist, but I was so burnt out. I loved my patients but it took a heavy toll on my mental health and well-being. It took me a long time, but I eventually realised it wasn't right for me, and now I'm moving in to public health, which is a much better fit for me It was so hard to let go of that dream, and it took a lot of soul-searching, but I'm proud of myself for doing it, and I'm proud of Philly for making the right choice for her ❤

I love to hear when people aren't afraid to change course. I spent years prepping for university and went, on a path to be a mathematics professor. After 4 years, burning out, realizing it wasn't what I truly wanted, I dropped it and pursued a creative life in the photo and filmmaking world, primarily focused in the music industry. Life is wild.

Presumably brands have a budget for elite athletes but then also a budget for marketing and social media etc. Seems like you hold all the cards tbh. If a brand wants to lock you in they're getting a lot of bang for buck 🤷‍♂️ also will need to do a 'favourite running shoe' video now you aren't legally obliged to only suggest NB haha

@EricS-uf9mv

This isn't entirely correct. Obviously we can't know for sure, but I can read between the lines pretty well. When Phily joined Team NB, I'd guess she was offered a modest "development" contract (salaried) based around bonuses and probably no reductions (due to her stipend being low enough it couldn't be realistically reduced). These types of contracts are predicated on the assumption the athlete will receive major bonuses for hitting explicit performance goals. Could be anything... podiums at major events, making national teams, hitting time goals, setting PB's, NR's, WR's, WL's, meet/facility records. But for the most part, athletes on these types of contracts at least need a part-time job to live comfortably & save. Phily & Daniel already had a 2nd gig that was growing (YT) when she quit her day job & joined Team NB. So from her POV the risk was minimal. Plus once she factored in the free professional coaching/trainers/physio staff, the facilities, shoes & gear, altitude camps, & travel/accommodations/expenses to any race she fancied covered, her dev. contract made even more sense. But when that contract expired, it sounds like NB re-optioned her for an Equipment-Only contract. This is the MOST common & SHITTY "pro" contract type out there. It gives the shoe company everything and the athlete nothing. You basically become free advertising for the company and receive nothing of real substance in return. Plus you lose all your rights & flexibility as an athlete to strike other financial arrangements w/o 1st receiving NB approval. This is what NB probably offered Phily when they tried re-upping her. So she told NB to go shove it! Good for her!! I think it's shocking how NB is sooooo short-sighted. In Phily they received WAY MORE VALUE in JUST publicity & advertising from her social media than they currently receive the majority their legit Olympic & Worlds pros! Those guys just pump out 1-line IG posts twice a month. They're just ticking off a contractual obligation. But Phily OTOH is doing 20-min long form video essays weekly, IN ADDITION to all the superficial IG/Twitter/FB bs stuff. Hell the commercial exposure Phily brought to NB was easily worth hundreds of thousands in marketing annually. Way more than NB was paying out. She reaches BOTH runners & non-runners! And that's not even counting the athletic potential. NB are idiots.
@SuperYtc1
@SuperYtc1 13 күн бұрын
@@EricS-uf9mv I wouldn't say Phily brings them in hundreds of thousands a year. But they were clearly not treating her as they should. I agree with Phily in that a partnership should be both giving and receiving. NB seem like they just want to exploit and receive. Phily has done the right thing imo. Being bold like that is easier said than done.
@EricS-uf9mv
@EricS-uf9mv 13 күн бұрын
@@SuperYtc1 Do you have any idea what national ad buys cost? You can easily spend a quarter million on a single ad campaign in a high profile national rag or paper. And that's PRINT media. Not long-form multi-media. Her content gave NB a weekly 20-30min showcase that ppl NOTICED. People were interested... as evidenced by the groundswell of 'Alphafly???' comments when things suddenly changed w/o Phily saying a word.

Cyclist here who subscribed because your video pacing your better 1/2 around a Park Run popped up on my feed when I was trying to get my own Park Run time under 30mins, and it made me laugh so much I’m still watching. It’s a shame running companies don’t take a leaf more out of some of the MTB / Freeride sponsors books who support a fair few bike riders not because of just their race or competition results, but often because of what they bring to the table with their social media presence and profile in the sport, I think they’re deffo missing a trick there and hopefully they will start to see the additional value that runners and athletes like yourself bring to the brand.

Really brave and smart opinions shared Phily. I had a job in academia, where the system is really broken wrt PhD students’ pay and work environment. Lots of more senior staff in academia’s attitudes are “we went through it, so you should too”. I feel like working in an industry where the system feels broken and yet so many people just grit their teeth and live with really crap conditions means that you have to make hard decisions - swimming against the current- that honour yourself and your worth. Kudos to you because it requires a lot of bravery and leaping into the unknown. You’re highlighting there are other ways to exist in the system.

This is part of the reason I left my PhD program. There were other reasons, too, but yeah... it would not have been a good work environment for me. Now, 10 years later, I'm a private coach and personal trainer. Functionally... I get paid to run. When a "professional" coaching job comes up (HS/university/etc.) I will admit I find it VERY tempting. But there's something to be said about being the one in the driver's seat, and I find myself continuously backing myself and going my own way. Way to go Phily!

A really well balanced take here. I've been a runner for 19 years and run 30 marathons, but I'm a creative writer profesionally and have been for 17 years. Back in the day, when I first got into running, I was so addicted to it, I thought I should become a personal trainer and ultimately make running my whole life / personality / career. I'm so glad I didn't. The career progression in what I do and ultimately the freedom / financial flex it gives me, enables me to run when I want. And I left running as a hobby - not my entire life. I feel like I would have grown to hate it if it had become everything to me. Wishing you all the best! xx

IMO, you rock!!!! I noticed this change a while back but didn’t ask anything as I figured you had some tight NDA, so I’ve been anxiously awaiting this update. Thrilled for you, your freedom, your outlook, and everything g else you’ve built. After recently reading both Lauren Fleshman’s and Kara Goucher’s books, I’ve grown some distaste for the big brands and how they run their pro athlete contracts, though I understand why they do it that way. Nonetheless, looking forward to seeing what’s next for you “beyond that mountain range.” You’ve got a huge community backing you…me included! Can’t wait to get my PBRC kit soon so I can wear it this summer!

Firstly as a northerner living down south can I just say, yes, you’re right 😉. Secondly, absolutely great video. I must say, I think the major brands are missing a trick. For the price of kit, subsidised training camps and physio it’s perplexing they wouldn’t want to be all over someone with your social media reach. To me it’s a no brainer to have you bedecked in their kit. Lastly, super proud to be a patron, and even if in a small way, support you to one day get that 5 ring tattoo

Go Phily! I just hope someone from NB was at the event last night, hearing all the cheering of your name & regretting all the exposure they have thrown away! I didn't hear anyone around me shout the name of any other runner (I actually felt sorry for them) We love everything you bring to us & the more human & vulnerable the more relatable it is, none (few) of us will ever be at your level, for us its about working at running but also loving it ❤

Just now shopping for new kit myself and the cost of just OK shoes is insane even for the casual runner like myself. I truly hope you do get a shoe sponsor (for kit at least) somehow yet still continue your preferred path to happiness. Love the channel and watching you and Daniel's adventures in running.

Thank you Phillipa for being as candid as you possibly could. I never subbed to your channel because of the titles and the countless PBs (of which more will come 🥳). I subbed because you were and continue to be real on your journey. You never owed us this video, but I and many others appreciate your honesty. We look forward to the next chapter and following you conquer your goals. Thank you, Philly. 😎🏆
