These horn players were part of Paul Shaffer's band for decades on David Letterman's Late Night, so their talent or their arrangement of the parts definitely were not the problem.

The keyboardist couldn't sing his part either lol. They split the vocal up and both of them were still terrible. If you're going to honor a legendary band with a cover while they're sitting there watching, pick a song you can actually sing.

Also, you clearly have never heard the induction speech Trey gave Genesis, or you misunderstand what 'disrespect' means, because that induction speech is full of respect and is possibly the best induction speech ever given any band.

Phish needed to do a Gabriel-era song and then a Collins-era (vocals) song. So, the Lamb selection couldn’t be an option. Interested to hear what Collins song you think could have been in Trey’s vocal range. For, the vocals was clearly the shortcoming with this selection.

Go search for their opening performance... they did "Watcher of the Skies", and it was such a great Phish moment, trolling the audience with a deep track honoring the early Peter Gabriel progressive rock roots of the band, to a bewildered audience who has no clue what's going on. This one is definitely sub par as far as Phish goes, but, I get the sense there's far less effort put into this one, as their focus was the first, and the audience gave them no vibe that they were interested.

@@petermanson3475 yes, I saw Phish's cover of Watcher shortly after Genesis's induction. You're probably right about Phish putting more effort into that cover. I love Trey's vocals, and all the guys singing, they are just not gonna pull off either a Gabriel era or Collins era Genesis song vocally. It's not about skill or commitment. It's just fit. Phish's Watcher cover was excellent musically (of course), and Trey pulled the vocals off competently. It was a tribute and you could tell Phish was seriously respecting Genesis. Especially in Trey's induction speech. You're right that the audience didn't get it.

I mean, the horns were out a couple of times as well. Most of the time they were fine but they weren't perfect. I think Mike and to a lesser extent Page were the only ones who looked like they were comfortable with the song.

I've played with musicians who want to do a certain song, but it doesn't fit into chord changes that they're used to, so they're immediately lost. And they don't care to get it right AT ALL, so it is what it is. And they play it the same jacked up way each time. Luckily, I play with other players who know how to do a song, so I don't get typecast as a player.

Yeah it’s a bummer because their cover of Watcher of the Skies was actually pretty good. I guess that’s really more their style than No Reply At All.

On the first listen through I agreed 1000% with you. I've actually watched this a couple more times, and I've changed my stance and think they did an amazing job. It's actually a really hard song to cover, which my guess is played a large role in them choosing it. The weakest link is Trey's vocals. They don't work well on this song, but the vocals on any given cover (especially in such a one off circumstance as this) is something I'm willing to give a pass on. Honestly, part of the cringe some of us have is that the song itself isn't generally widely liked anywhere near as much as many of the other Genesis pop singles. Also, this song came after an amazing Watcher of the Skies and possibly the best induction speech I've ever seen given for any band. They didn't save the best for last here, sadly. Genesis has a huge catalog. Lots of great great songs (I'm a huge fan as well). 'No reply at all' was likely on very few 'top 20' lists of songs people wanted to hear covered. All in all, I can't think of anyone else better to have inducted Genesis than Phish, or cover them if they weren't going to play themselves.
