there is so much sound that comes off stage when Phish is performing. It is hard to believe it is four guys.

1.3.15 Down with Disease - easily one of the best jams in the modern era. Very inspired playing that sees multiple themes explored, sections foreshadowing songs that would later emerge that summer, and explosive peaks. Summer 2015 ended up being great, a full return to glory for many, and this jam hangs with its best.

Chris and and his crew had it down. The 5th bandmate did a great job in assisting the highs and lows of the musical flow through his lights. Yes way more intense late 90s as to why they changed the pink floyd esque light set up. But this is just fine. Imo. Actually done very well. The other four members have room for critique but this is great. I love these guys and am just glad they still play. Any comment of mine towards 3.0 will only be grateful though.

pretty rad how these fellas can turn a song around. This was one of the roughest runs through the composed section of "Disease" that I've heard, and the beginning of the jam was lackluster. Then, all of a sudden, things just get sultry.

Notice how when Chris stops going fucking apeshit-ADD with unnecessary lighting effects, the magic comes out in the music.
@andrewgrey429 жыл бұрын
Not really. He's the fifth memeber. He jams with them... 6:17 is a good place to see him reacting with Trey, Gumbo72203 .
@Gumbo722039 жыл бұрын
Andrew Grey My point is that often in 3.0, he just goes crazy and does SO much stuff that the band is never able to gel with him or get a footing. That's why a lot of 3.0 jams up through 2011 never got off the ground in any meaningful way. He's gotten better, but he still often peaks the lights when the music isn't peaking, changing patterns all the fucking time and making shit blink and strobe when it doesn't match the energy level of what's happening with the music. This jam he actually follows the band and gives them some moods to work with, and voila! The music elevates and we get some cohesive, concrete themes. I think a big reason Mike's Song jams have lacked in 3.0 is because when the jam starts, Chris is already peaking the fucking lights. He doesn't give them time to build, or give them any mood to work with and create from. His work annoys me often because I feel like he's doing too much. Only a few times in 3.0 have I ever felt like he did something that actually complemented the music that was happening (End section of the Hampton '13 Tweezer) and they became one cohesive thing that transcended the sum of their parts. A lot of times I feel like he's just "talking" over the music.
@Gumbo722039 жыл бұрын
Gumbo72203 Also watch some bigger jams like the Randall's Tweezer (i believe) where he makes things blink, and its not even in time with the music, when the jam is building. Its like he feels he has to do something to keep the kids enertained. But nobody notices that his pattern shifting isn't even in time with the beat. He's just playing with his toys. (I know this is a controversial opinon. I just like his lighting work during 1.0 so much more). The Mike's Song from the Vegas DVD is a perfect example of Chris working with the band and peaking together.
@andrewgrey429 жыл бұрын
Gumbo72203 , it sounds like you're blaming Ck5 as the reason Phish didn't jam in early 3.0 , which is just silly!! I'm sure the primary reason is Trey getting used to being on the back burner and allowing for more mini type II jams rather than a whole bunch of shredding and type I . You can literally hear Trey stopping himself form wailing out. SPAC 2013 is a great case study for that.

The weeds that grow through the bricks are the stongest, best medicine.... "organic friendy" or not. Btw can anyone tell me what Organic Friendly means? This was the logan on the ad that came up right before this Phish song for me,,,love this song, not surprised I got an "organic friendly" weed-killer commercial before I got to hear it. They don't seem that stoked about this song in this one anyway, and I don't understand why I have to listen to an ad about "'Almost'""Organic Friendly" Fertilizer" before listening to the song. Do Any Phishead algorithm people have REAL ORGANIC fertilizer for sale around these parts? To tell you the truth - I'm just bitter bc I can't afford the $13 per month for no commercial interruptions. And I really love to make phun of phish.
