I think the reason more people make phlebotomy an actually career and stay one is because the work is less stressful their not doing hard physical work that CNAs have to do plus the pay is better

I'm a CNA at a nursing home and we get paid in Minnesota in the mid teens for salary plus time and a half for overtime and holidays. So my checks are pretty big. My problem is that I'm turning 47 this year and I go home so exhausted. I'm trying to decide if I can handle nursing or if I should be a H.I.T. Our local phlebotomy class is 4 months but I'm not sure what they get paid. I appreciate any input.

Jodi Lynn Nelson you could always just ask your local phlebotomist. I’ve found that indeed (at least in my local area) is pretty accurate as to what the pay scale is. When I was a CNA the most I made was $11.42 and I was told by the phlebotomist that they were making more than that. I can’t remember the exact number. If you could do it I’d encourage nursing as you’ll make more than both of them.

Being a CNA is harder on the body, BUT it's excellent if the goal is nursing school. As an RN, BSN, I wish I had been a CNA in a hospital while in nursing school. I have all the book learning, but am very deficient in the whys and wherefores of hospital life and patients. It was hard for me to learn to touch other people, to invade their space. I wasn't sure of my role vs CNAs. You're right about phlebotomists and IVs, but human interaction is so much less than a CNA. The CNA feeds well into the nursing role, at least in my opinion.

Same in new jersey it is very high and if you have ekg with phabotomy you can start with 20$ -25$ and you can go up yo 75k a year only if you have phabatomy with ekg.

@@stevenmendezstevenmendez1258 I was going to mention you could become a PCT and get ALL the skills. Haha. In my area, one of the schools I am looking at offers PCT certification with phlebotomy, EKG, and nurse aide. Of course, it cost 3 times as much, and I just need the CNA to apply to one of the nursing schools I'm looking at. They won't accept phlebotomy. That could be another consideration.

I am a CNA... and dang, I just dislike the work overload and the abuse from the nurses and pouring everything onto us. I'm thinking about Phlebotomy, or Pharmacy Technician. I'm going to stay a CNA for another year and do some travel contracts and then do Pharmacy Tech while I'm traveling. (Its online). After I finish the Pharmacy Tech program I think next I want to do Nursing school... being a CNA just is too much to deal with.

My have times changed. Now is the perfect time to be a CNA. I know so many that's making $25-$40 an hour with very little experience. Meanwhile it's hard getting $15 coming in as an Phlebotomist.

What about the bad part of being a CNA? I have heard some horror stories since you have to deal a lot with the elderly a lot of the times, especially in nursing homes and a lot of them have dementia. I heard of CNA's being kicked, bit, punched, poop thrown at them. You Should of mentioned that CNA's have to do a lot of what people call the "dirty work" like changing diapers, wiping butts, cleaning poop, pee, ect. This is important for people to be aware of the rough reality of being a CNA.

This is a good point, however in this video I did not break it down that far. Yes those horror stories are true in most cases, that’s not necessarily everyday but it does happen.

Hi, CNA here it really does depend where you work where I work is very calm it’s a nursing home. I do admit sometimes when you change a patient it’s very bad but not all the time. It’s very different when you work at a hospital I’ve heard that RNs do the changing, bathing, etc. Not CNAs …

You’ll be trained to stick and have to be checked off as a skill in nursing school. You should get some instruction on the skill before you have to do it in class. But everyone is nervous in nursing school about most of nursing school not just the skills part.

I'm currently a medical assistant, worked at a clinic previously and I loved doing phlebotomy, I would be the first to volunteer to do the sticking on that patient. I recently quit my job and was thinking of becoming a phlebotomist because I really do enjoy doing the work I have 3000$ so far and the program is 1,500$ that's the only thing preventing me from going in because of the price, I'm currently 19 years old I know 1500$ is not alot of money but as a 19 year old it feels like alot ! Would you say it's best towards education ? And with the title medical assistant + phlebotomist would the pay scale move up more since I would get both titles ?

When it comes to pay increase it’s all up to the employer. However having another certification is always a good thing. I know it seems like a lot of money and it is but it’ll definitely help in the future. Just my $.02.

Kay Jones I’m not sure which side you are arguing. But here in North Carolina the difference between the pay for each CNA and phlebotomist is about $2.90/hr in favor of the phlebotomist. The average is $10.48/hr for CNA and $13.38/hr for phlebotomist. www.indeed.com/salaries/Phlebotomist-Salaries,-North-Carolina, www.indeed.com/salaries/Nursing-Assistant-Salaries,-North-Carolina. There could always be a difference in your area but with the information I was given in my area this is how the pay is broken down.
