The Art of Photography

Күн бұрын

Another Monday - that means Photo Assignments! This challenge involves eye-level photography. We've talked about creating drama with perspectives using low angle photography so in this video we will continue with that theme shooting eye-level.
Eye level is defined most obviously in portraits. The relationship between the photographer and the subject is extremely important in the success of a good photograph. In this tutorial I will show you how to achieve this.

All depends on who you think shot him, doesn't it? For the Oswald viewpoint, it was from well above. If you're a grassy-knoll type, not so much. ;)

Hi Ted, I don't think I'm going to participate in the assignment, but it was really interesting to see the effect of angle and distance in portraits. The thing that I always like the most in your videos is the example photos, not only they convey the concept clearly but they are gorgeous. The later being something that I don't see a lot in educational resources and that makes a world of difference to me. Thanks!

First, I apologizes for some of this language. Some things that I was taught as a young (40) wedding and event photographer.photographer 1. don't shoot from a high angle 2. every time you press the shutter, (film) cost 42 cents 3. One of my best, most effective mentors told me about wedding portraits and camera levels..."tittie hi, will buy." Very crude but essentially, very slightly below eye level. when I hang a show in a gallery, I put the center of the painting, picture, photo 60 inches from the floor. If viewers are of average height in the US, that will bring it to just about "eye level."

@dramamine755
@dramamine755 7 жыл бұрын
Raychristofer oh ok. I know shooting on auto is popular nowadays sadly. I would probably assume he's full manual as he probably learned on film too
@Raychristofer
@Raychristofer 7 жыл бұрын
that being said when I'm doing street photography and I need to be quick and discreet I usually choose the aperture that will give the depth of field I want i use aperture priority. Street photography is something I definitely am an amateur at. My latest review was a Panasonic 25 MM lens that I use for Street, good thing about photography is there's always something new to learn. I'm thinking of trying medium format bw film next and learning to develop and scan it at home.

So do wide angle lenses always come with distortion? I thought shooting at 85mm was to minimize distortion in the subject
@hoorayforpentax3801
@hoorayforpentax3801 7 жыл бұрын
Wide angle lenses alter proportions and projection of faces when you fill the viewfinder with the face. Further back, there is not so much of a problem. Your average 18-55 crop DSLR kit lens gives you 35mm field-of-view equivalents of roughly 28mm at the wide end to eighty-something at the narrow. Take a shot of someone's face filling the viewfinder top to bottom at both focal lengths plus somewhere in between, and you will see.

I've been enjoying these photo assignments although I'm a couple of years late in starting them. I have a question. You attribute a photo of a "kid with gun" to W. Eugene Smith but I believe that is a photo by William Klein taken in NYC when he visited his old neighborhood on the Upper West Side. Am I mistaken?
@hillsudi5194

hello, please can this rule be applied to other forms of Photography like landscapes, macro or flower?
@zvxcvxcz
@zvxcvxcz 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and these different angles can be used to even greater effect there because they are employed even less often. Most people shoot from their own height at flowers, even if they get down some they are usually still shooting down on the flowers. It's pretty rare for someone to shoot at flower height, and even rarer to shoot up at them. Some of my most interesting flower shots are facing upwards.
