Photo Critique - STOP asking for Constructive Criticism and STOP being so quick to give bad feedback

For years, I have watched photographers posting photos online with the caption “CC Welcome” For those of you that may have missed it - CC stands for Constructive Criticism. When it comes to photo critiques the irony is that when the criticism is posted one of two things happens… Either the photographer strikes back and defends his or her choices or the comments mandatorily state that such and such is wrong and should be changed - because its a rule.
It is impossible to gather good information that will help you improve your photography that way. The fact of the matter is MOST people don’t know how to give good constructive criticism. Full disclosure - I read an article this week on F-Stoppers.com about this very subject. Now I want to be clear, I am a big fan of F-Stoppers and the author of the article. I have included a link to it in the description below, because I think that it is well written and makes some excellent suggestions - BUT by the authors own admission - it is written from the perspective how to give constructive criticism - not how to ask for it.
Many of you know that I started a Facebook group for photographers several months ago. When I launched the group - I made a commitment that it would be different. In fact so different that I actually expected it to fail, because I didn’t think people would put in the effort. To my surprise, the group is flourishing and growing at a very rapid rate with members from all over the world.

It seems that you have the makings of a wonderful community that sincerely wants to learn and grow as photographers. I've taken your advice to "lurk" for a while, just to see how things are done before posting any pictures. Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this. Your boundless energy is infectious, informative and inspiring!

Great video. I've always said constructive criticism should leave a person excited to go back and try again, keep shooting, and grow as a photographer, not discouraged and feeling like they should give up. There's an art to it and if you're not good at it you just shouldn't do it.

As always, Joe, I find your content valuable and informative. I agree that the facebook group is off to a strong start, and I hope to see it continue to grow. On the topic of constructive critisism, I want to kindly suggest a toning down of transitional effects: spinning screens and odd sound effects help distinguish the points of your ideas and the "cut," but they quickly become tired and border on obnoxious. Less is more, I feel. That said, the peel - away cut was something new and very cool--hats off to your hard work!

I love your channel and your work (thanks for admitting me to the FB Group), It's amazing! Your a true teacher and I wish I had your class a few semesters ago. At times my Photography Professor made us feel like crap on judging our submissions in open class review. He wasn't constructive or nurturing to us in that Intro to photography class. If it wasn't for my inner self esteem I would have left photography alone all together. Some students dropped the class. Meeting teachers such as yourself and Phlearn let me know that their are people that are passionate about not only Photography but also People Learning... THANK YOU!!! P.S. On another note is it me or do this Video keep going in and out of focus (observe the eyes).

Great video! I was guilty of seeking CC myself on a photo sharing site and the sad thing was that the most I got was a "like" but never any feed back good or negative, just "likes" looks like I came to the right place.

Thanks so much for your experienced and carefully thought out advice, as always. The part about explaining what was pre-visualized so that it can be compared to the final image is really important. That makes it less subjective and more "I was trying to accomplish X... did I get it?" Of course, if you are asking for CC on a picture that wasn't even pre-visualized or purposeful in the first place.... then I am not sure what that is. I love your use of audible sound cues between points, that is really helpful and welcome. Although, that PARTICULAR sound will take some getting used to. :-)

Thanks for the heads up on this video. Good info here and you are convincing me. I once was critiqued by Joe McNally and I told my self that if my images ended up not being liked, I would walk away from photography ( foolish of me I know) he ended up liking the final image in the set. He asked questions and gave out pointers for ( distracting things in an image such as hotspots ). Zack Arias critiqued one of my images and he was brutal , left me wanting to curl up into a little ball and cry. Lol. Both were great experiences but not a life changing ones. I can see your point now. Thanks Joe.. :-)

Good tips and advice, but unfortunately there are some photographers who think their work is so good it's beyond criticism. I had a run in with a moderator/owner of a Facebook group last year when I offered IMHO comments on how she could improve her photography the upshot of which was that she banned my access to the group. At no time did I say her photographs sucked or were in any way bad and the criticism I offered was mostly on post editing as a way of improving colour, removing unwanted objects etc. One thing was very clear from reading the groups postings was that for her, posting photographs was a way to have her ego stroked as she always responded to praise and never to criticism. I now don't bother giving feedback on posted images on any site as I've found they are generally not really welcome even though they may be asked for.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience Nicholas Fox, but not participating isn't the answer either. Everyone who starts a group has a motive. So do I. My motive is to build community around my channel - I make no secret of that, but like my channel, I am dedicated to sharing knowledge and as you heard in this video - trying to teach people how to share AND receive in a better way.
@Argyll9846

I agree. I guess part of the problem is that many, perhaps the majority, of photographers out there are not honest/judgemental enough with themselves when it comes to evaluating and culling their images to get rid of the dross. My landscape culling revolves around poor exposure and bad composition both of which are easily recognizable and I don't need somebody to tell me when I've screwed up because I can see it for myself. I really enjoy your channel because you're enthusiastic and not afraid to impart you knowledge. I'm not, however, really a fan of the curtain pull aside midway through videos as I personally find it a bit annoying though others probably don't - just a personal opinion.
