Portwood 47:45 photo outside 145 Great Portwood Street the scouts walking in the parade I am in the background in my mother's arms. That's Mather's Pie Shop on the right the tramlines were lifted in 1951 I was six years old. My uncle, Frank Heywood drove the last tram in Stockport He put it onto the low loader for shipment to America His route had been the Stockport to Hyde tram He would stop the tram outside our house and get Mother's shopping list and bag his wife Francis was a clippy. they took the Tramways pub on after they were made redundant, Folk thought it was a legitimate stop outside 145 Great Portwood Street My Mothers half brother Sam Sleigh was also a tram driver.

Fascinating because in the mid 1950s I had a friend named Sam Bartles who lived with his married sister, Alice Brocklehurst and Sam's brother in law (can't now remember his name ) on the left at the top of Gt Portwood Street going towards Brinnington. I can't now remember the house number too, but as I recall it was almost opposite the church. Just above their house and on the same side was J Oswold Mennie's dental practice. He was a superb dentist and eventually moved his practice to Offerton Fold. With my eventual wife, we remained patients of the Mennie practice until we moved to West Yorkshire in 1971. Behind Gt. Portwood Street was Thomas Storey's engineering works. They manufactured agricultural machinery, specialising in machines for either planting potatoes or harvesting them. I can't remember which. Storey also built Bailey bridges, presumably carrying on from WW2 activities. Sam Bartle's brother in law was a lorry driver for Storeys and delivered the potato machines all over Britain. From 1954 and onwards, I daily rode my Royal Enfield 'Bullet' along Portwood to get to the Oil Well Engineering Co. Ltd., Bird Hall Lane, Cheadle Heath. The stone setts and tramlines on Portwood were particularly hazardous when wet and if it was a bit icy or snowing that made it even more tricky. At least in those days, if one slid off, one hadn't the intensity and volumes of traffic to compete with as now. Some fascinating memory joggers in the video, but I have to say I found the constant Dixieland (?) type music to be very irritating even though it's volume is modulated during the dialogue sections.

I served my apprenticeship (T.R Rowbotham and Son) in a mill that was on Brewery St at the back of Portwood. In later years my mum worked at the Vernon Mill at a furniture company.
