My fox terrier smooth used to do the pounce thing, but he would go straight up and then in a fluid motion straight down paws first like an Olympic diver, no splash, full weight onto his prey under the snow. He could hear saws working a mile away through many walls. His ancestors were mini greyhound and white fox. His ears were huge and he was all muscles and speed. it was a joy just to look at him walk around, sleep, run, bark at ducks, bark at the clouds, whatever. The week he passed, the ducks walked up to me looking for him. I told them he was not coming back. They looked at each other and quietly walked back to the pond where they heard his territorial warnings everyday of their lives. I miss him so much. Videos like this help me with it. Thanks for your persistence. Foxes are special animals. Though owls and deer, moose and eagles are wonderful, too.

I cannot believe just how tolerant of people your N. American wildlife is! To have a signposted den and be able to sit out in the open to photograph a vixen and Cubs is incredible. Here in Wales wildlife is very wary of any human activity and it takes a lot of time and patience to get anything decent. Last year a vixen was killed on a lane near my home and it turned out that she had a litter of 4 cubs in an earth nearby. Over a period of time I was able to supplement their food supply and in return gain the confidence of one of the cubs; enough for it to allow me some good opportunities to take some images. Normally however, I would need to be well concealed if I wanted to get any images. Great video.

Love, love love the foxes and kits! One of my top three favorite animals!! I know they are canines, but they somehow, at least to me, also have some feline characteristics which may be what endears them so much to me. Those long, bushy, thick tails! Thanks for the super adorable video!

Another great video! Red fox, believe the gray is called a dark phase or something similar. Blessed to have a den about 200’ from my front door that looks a lot like this same setting (but no Grand Teton backdrop). Use is hit or miss but when the kits are there, it’s tons of fun to watch their play. No NPS to restrict access so getting close is only constrained by their and mamma’s tolerance. Always look forward to your next video.

Yes Foxes!! ..I have a weakness for foxes, there's a den only a 5 minute walk from my house. I see them out, not too often, they are really good a keeping hidden here. I was lucky in spring of 2009, I live on the Northeast coast of Newfoundland aka Ice Berg Alley, the sea ice was thick right along the shoreline bringing seals in. Unfortunately, a seal had died, not sure if it was hunted by an animal or crushed by the ice. My WOW moment came when I looked out and seen a Bald Eagle feasting on it with an Arctic Fox laying on the ice only a few feet away, waiting his turn. The sun was just starting to set and the sky was on fire, felt like I was watching a National Geographic show...the sad part, I never had my camera. I'll probably never witness anything like it again, but the image from that day is forever burned in my memory. Polar Bears are another visitor, this year we had four make an appearance in town..lol Thanks for these adventures Steve! They are fun to watch.

@J4Photo

Cuteness overload. I think you nailed a few of those! I assume the eye color changes when they become adults? The white tip to the tails reminds me of the flags we used to attach to our bikes when we were little to be seen by cars... is that indicative to young kits as well, or just these two? Liked It.

Which fox species are these from? I know I've seen similar examples but cannot find a name. Gray fox? Cross fox?
@GeorgeSBlonsky
@GeorgeSBlonsky 5 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but Mama's colouration would indicate that she is a Cross Fox (faint black bar across the shoulders).. though Cross Foxes are still of the Vulpes vulpes (Red Fox) species they are a melanistic variant... the kits though, especially the one in photo at 14:56 looks like Red Fox with his white bib.

Great video! The thermacell I presume emits ultrasound. Like a dog whistle, I'm surprised it doesn't bother the foxes. For complex reasons, I have a Z7 on a 500mm f/4 and an A9 on a 100-400 f/5.6-6.3. I can't imagine any problems getting the A9 to focus, but do you have any suggestions on getting the Z7 to focus?
