Shooting in Bulb mode is important because you can control how long the shutter remains open to capture the fireworks' "light trails." I use an electrical cable release so I don't disturb my camera. Focal length depends on how close or far you are from the bursts and how much surroundings you want in the image. Our Fourth of July show occurs downtown along a river. My shooting location requires a 35 mm wide angle lens in Portrait orientation to get all the bursts and some of their reflection off the water. A tripod is required; I usually capture four to eight bursts in an image. Fireworks are VERY bright and I've found I get best color at f/18, ISO 100 and Manual focus. Some basic tweaks in LR will yield wonderful color and detail. I shoot 120+ images during our 30 minute show which yield about a dozen images with very interesting patterns and colors. This is a shooting opportunity I look forward to each summer. It's easy and fun.

If you don't have the app or the app is not working for you, use the 2 second timer to eliminate any shake introduced by manually pressing the shutter. This year, I did that with my point and shoot. I learned my lesson the hard way as last year's pictures have lots of shake. Also, you could use the timelapse function. Set the shutter time for 2-3 seconds and let it run. Some cameras will give you each individual photo as well as the movie.

One thing I did not understand while using this mode is when should I stop. Like I see maybe 20 fireworks go up, one after the other. When should I stir and start taking photos again.

You can also use the camera's touchscreen to start and stop!

Get a corded or cordless remote, they're great and you don't have to mess with apps, just plug in and click and lock, then release after whatever time.

Griffin- Just to clarify: Your questioner was asking if you hit the shutter once to open and again to close. That is not what you were doing when using the camera shutter release in "B" mode. On the app when you hit the shutter release button once to open and actually tap it again to close, that is called "T" (Time) mode, or at least it was in the old days. Old SLR cameras had both "T" and "B" mode settings. Not sure if any current digital cameras still have the T setting??

Hi Griffin, would you recommend to keep image stabilization on as well as the built in stabilization on the lens when on a tripod to take photos of the firework display?

After seeing your infrared landscapes and cat shots and now these , I emphatically state that you are an excellent photographer . focus been the issue the sensor lock on to nothing light coming in don't count as a object ~ but building are object ~ guess what in focus? and what out of focus our camera we op for cable press switch plug

Cable release

The most basic piece of equipment that is needed without ever touching the camera is a remote shutter release. Why in God's name would you not use this, A $20 piece of equipment would remove any and all doubts of camera shake, with a decent tripod. Very amateurish to watch your phone will the activities are going off.
