This week, I took the Yakima River Canyon Highway from Ellensburg to Yakima. This beautiful road winds along the Yakima River and offers some incredible views and recreational areas. I end up up in the town of Yakima and stop for a Big Miner Burger at the iconic burger joint, Miners. I end the night by driving around the Union Gap neighborhood taking photos of people I come across. Enjoy!

How is this a positive side? Once he got off the Canyon Road, he did a whole miniseries on Miner's Drive for some mysterious reason, then took pictures of First Street, one of the ugliest places in Yakima, then tried to take some photos in one of the poorest areas of Yakima.

Very entertaining video Brae, I recognized...everywhere. Miners was my home, more or less, before I was married. Everyone there knew my name and recognized my car when I drove up. Somewhere in a storage box I have a picture of that footbridge on the Yakima River from the 1970's. It looks much more user friendly now than it did in those days. i once took my young son across the river on it and he refused to ever again set foot on it. I like that you are talking to strangers and taking their pictures. Nice.

Good Job Brae, I grew up in Yakima and had a wonderful; time growing up there. In fact I had such a great time growing up there, I still consider Yakima my home- always will. You picked a perfect time to photograph the Canyon area. It must have been spring, for that is the only time those hills have green grass, most of the year the hillsides are brown from the dry heat. The rock cliff where the people where having lunch, when I was a teen we used to "float that river" and we would stop at that overhang and jump off the into the river. The Sea Galley restaurant you stood in front of to take a picture of the motel....is a story in itself. When I was young back in the 70s and 80s Sea Galleys were everywhere as common as Applebees today....Now I think that maybe the last Sea Galley still standing. I could have showed you a whole lot of interesting sites around the Yakima valley to photograph...BTW.

Beautiful. No one could doubt how much you love the land up there where you live. Maybe that’s a part of why your photographs connect so well. I like the 105mm to 55mm side by side. As someone who rarely shoots in wide open spaces like that, I would have without thinking reached for a wide or moderately wide angle lens, but the depth compression of the longer lens is perfect for that scene! Thanks for that quick tip. Incredible drone footage over the river, too. Cheers!

@@BraeHunziker I am an outreach worker here in Yakima and would gladly escort you. As a 62 yr old woman than grew up in north east Yakima near Boise Cascade mill I saw our city transform from a loving diverse community to where we are today. This is poverty neglected. The low income neighborhoods got ignored and forgotten for too many years. Kids had to try to catch a bus to get to a better neighborhood in the summertime where the swimming pools are. Look at the difference in street maintenance from one side of town to the other. The people controlling things created this and now we have a growing epidemic they are still trying to push away and ignore. So sad. Yakima could be better if we tried.

@@cathyhale5168 They don't want to hear it. They never have. They like keeping that part of Yakima down. Because if they weren't, the people there would vote. And when they did vote, it most likely wouldn't be for the people currently in power who do the bare minimal for them. It's purely reptilian.

Great photo. But you missed such of Yakima. Some of the older buildings downtown have great architectural details and there's the old train depot

Brae, looks like you were at Umtanum creek. During a day with dappled clouds you need to cross that bridge, and hike up the slope to North Yakima Skyline Trail. You get some awesome views and beautiful patterns on the hills. Also the only time I was on that trail... 5% chance of rain. Only rained on me and buddy , and only on that ridge.... for 4 hours.... not on the valley ..not in town...just that ridge.......

Blast from the past. I moved to Yakima in the mid-1970s for work, living there for abut a year. I probably shot a half dozen rolls of 35mm Plus-X on the river first shown, and one the few shots I still remember was of the bridge at 3:00. Cannot say I enjoyed the living experience in Yakima, which blended a depressing mix of economic and social class structure, driven by an entrenched racism which was open and notorious.

Yeah, I’m not sure what the current social climate is like there now. Although, much of my family still lives there. Looking to spend more time in the area this summer.

Ive lived in this area my entire life, and has been apart of my service area for 20 years. No place has fallen as far as yakima. I weep inside every time i work there and see more and more houses get boarded up. Now they have mega processors that buy all the competiion for their rich trade with china. I sometimes wonder, will they hang from those same trees for the distruction they caused?

Please go to an old person sometime and say: You look quite old. Have you ever heard of the unwritten law of film photographers? :D When you see something old... Photographing people with their surroundings brings a whole other class of quality. The lady in her hut and the two dudes with their drink in the cars are really real banger.

That has happened to me so many times and fucked me to the point where I keep on my fridge a list of all my cameras and what is currently loaded in them and also what batteries they take along with my light meters. And I keep spare batteries for all of them in a pouch in my tiny bag because I've been fucked so hard over the years with a brick. Sometimes I'm lucky with what I'm shooting because it has no meter, sometimes I'm fucked because I'm shooting with no meter using my meter and I have nothing times 10. Then, I guess hard. Anyway, been there many times, done that many times. I love your fails because they feel like mine from a decade ago and I get nostalgic. But I really wanted those shots, and I got a mirror up.. So many brutal moments in such impossible times. Such is life as a photographer. I keep a first aid kit for my shit now. It's worked out. Lens cloth, batteries, a cpl an orange, a few wrenches, and it's worked out. But I'll find a new way after 35 years to fuck all that up too. The struggle is constantly real. So keep it so. And keep shooting. I'll love your attitude, and I really want to push you on your personal commitment to take those photographs of people and establish that relationship. Those trees will in some form always be there, the people, in your time, not so much. Just my take. I really enjoy your approach and your relationships. I acknowledge the cine side of how you document it as well. Way not my thing, but you are gifted. Run with it. I still have thoughts of that trip you took with your dad, and older videos of your fuck ups. Human is human. That is what makes us all look in the eye and trust each other. And once you have that ability, reaching out to others is like talking to a long lost family member. I've never had an issue or any obstacle once I realized my peace with myself. People are forgiving. You just have to forgive and laugh at yourself first. Can't wait to do a car bomb with you one day.
