Photography and Video Backdrops - Difference Between Cotton & Paper Backgrounds

In this video we go through the differences between cotton muslin and paper backdrops for photography and video. #paperbackdrops #photography #hypop
There are three main considerations when selecting a backdrop:
1. Price
2. Portability
3. Production
PRICE
The price of a backdrop varies with the sizes available. Paper backdrops are typically available in two widths:
- 2.72m x 10m (Full Width)
- 1.36 x 10m (Half Width)
Cotton muslin backdrops are available in various sizes, including:
- 3 x 6m (For full body)
- 3 x 3m (For cropped / half body shots)
- 2 x 3m (For cropped/ single subjects)
- 1.45 x 1m (For headshots - shoulders and above) - perfect for livestream and KZfaq.
PORTABILITY
Storing and transporting backdrops is a consideration when deciding the location for your shoot. Cotton muslin backdrops can be folded and transported easily, compared to paper backdrops that will typically need a vehicle to transport.
Cotton muslin backdrops are machine washable whereas paper backdrops will need to be disposed of (length cut off) when dirtied.
PRODUCTION
The type of production needs to be taken into consideration when selecting the colour of your backdrop. Will it be for a video or a photo shoot? Chroma key backdrops or plain solid colours are versatile to have for video shoots, whereas any colour can be typically be used in a photoshoot, depending on the brief or what shot is being achieved.
ACCESSORIES
The main accessories to consider with your new backdrop would be:
- Backdrop Stand - to help mount your backdrop in a studio or on-location environment. Alternatively, permanently installed ceiling or wall mounts are available.
- Backdrop Pegs - to help keep backdrops taut or to prevent them from unravelling when mounted to a backdrop stand. Either peg the top of the backdrop (for paper backdrops) or the sides of the backdrop to keep them taut.
- Weighted Sand Bags - It's best to keep your backdrop stands weighted with the assistance of sand bags to maintain stability of your backdrop, when mounted.

This video helps a lot with purchase decision! Would also love to know though comparisons for which backdrops are best for which situations (like is muslin for better for outdoors, or paper better for portait photography, etc.)

Should a cotton backdrop be less wide than the stand? If it's wider than the stand, wouldn't that cause wrinkles?

Can you please let me know if cotton muslin backdrops are suitable for full length shots where I want some frame of the floor as well in the same color as the background. (the cloth extended towards me(the photographer). ) Will it have wrinkles while people are standing on it?

Hi Sameer, it will be suitable for full length shots however will wrinkle when someone stands on it. Paper backdrops are the cleanest backdrop if you want to avoid wrinkles or texture in your shots.

There's this type of fabric which is like canvas, it is called 600D or D600 its perfect for backdrop and it will not wrinkle

You most certainly can. The main concern when using a green screen is to ensure it's well lit for a clean chroma key during post!

For anyone reading this, consider that green color reflecting unto the subject can become a problem using this method, depending on how critical the work is.

No mention of polyester backgrounds and PVC materials ones. I'd imagine they aren't that much different from cotton?

Polyester are quite similar to cotton backdrops and will still need some form of ironing/steaming. PVC are more commonly used as surfaces for product photo tables and more suitable for photographing smaller items.

Hello! Is it possible to print on muslin fabric? Cos i need a backdrop to look like a classic painting and its either i paint on it(which, is it also possible?) or hire someone to print on it using with my photo using an inkjet printer. Thank you! and I hope you answer :)

I can't see why not. Depending on the muslin fabric you get they're made from either 100% cotton or poly/cotton blend. The 100% cotton material would be similar to screen printing on t-shirts. Acrylic paints would be best suited

This video could not have a come at a better time because I am lookibg to buy local paper or fabric for my shoots. Thanks. Side: note I do not know how your mic is setup but I will assume it is a lav mic. I can hesr the gain (hissing) as the mic adjusts to your voice to pick it up. Work on that or I highly recommend a shotgun mic for crisp audio. Kudos.. Keep the good work up.

You can most definitely wash them. Only concern would be to steam out all the creases once washed. A dry cleaner would be the easiest option!

Hi Andy, our store only currently offers paper and cotton backdrops as these are the most popular. We decided to just clarify the differences on those backdrops for any people in the market who may not be sure what to choose.
