Your music analogy was perfect to explain why professional photographers still use the rule of thirds 99% of the time even though photography is art and subjective! Well thought out video on composition Ralph, tons of information in here!

This is so awesome Ralph. When I first started photography, I read lots of articles on composition (rule of the thirds, etc. etc.) and I don't think I still quite mastered it - but then again, it really is all about the balance as you put it, not about the numbers or technicality. This is probably the best tutorial on composition I have come across so far!

Love this Ralph! I appreciate your examples and how you place certain messages to help us all see what you are talking about. I enjoy using geometry for our photos, but obviously you don’t find that everywhere. I learned the rule of thirds in film school, and they taught us how the human eye tend to go to each of the 4 corners and its order. It stick with me. Different perspectives are like a magic key. Show things from points most people don’t usually look from, that’s why drone shots are so like-able Landscape can be tricky, when we were in Utah I had a tough time liking my own photos because I didn’t want the beautiful landscape to look blah... and I had to move the focus up and down, left to right several times and shot shot shot. Love this video Ralph

Hey, this was super helpful! Just started photography as a hobby this Fall, and noticed that some photos "felt" good, and some "felt" awkward - unbalanced, pointless, bland. Looking over my more successful photos, the ones that worked followed (unintentionally) these suggestions. Now that I have a more systematic understanding, am looking forward to taking more good photos! Thanks so much, Hyun.

Never really thought about hierarchy when it comes to the focal point. I like using natural framing quite a bit. Love the rule of thirds. I'm always cutting Nabol's head and he hates it. LOL Yes! Far too many vids on KZfaq focus on shapness & way way too many on bokeh. Composition should be about 80-90 % of the vids. So this is very refreshing & sorely needed. Thank You very much for your effort here. The youngins just don't get enough of this.

What about "rule of quarters"?
@LifetimeTravelmates
@LifetimeTravelmates 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this nice explanation. I think many people knows "composition", rulenlf thirds, etc. But when they are not on "shooting mode" they forfet about that. I mean, for example they are in the middle of an event...or travelling or suddenly see something and want to catch a photo of it, they out there doing something else, not taking photos, then they forget about "the rules". It happens to me a lot. I can be in photo mode "ok, let's go take photos now" and study well the composition and all. Butnowadays that we easily carry camera(phone) everywhere and do other things, when we capture a moment all those roles are usually forgotten 😅 Do you have any tip to force the brain to remember those rules even with a casual shot ? I always wonder, there might be some selfie composition rules that aren't the same as you talked in this video, right? Is there any "study" about selfies? 🤔
@bfs5113
@bfs5113 4 жыл бұрын
May I allow to give my 2 cents. After one has enough experience, certain "techniques" would become habits. For instance, recognize good light, background, sub framing and especially removing distractions. In some ways, it is either part of the art of seeing or spaced repetition. Difference with selfie? None I can think of since taking a selfie is just photographing oneself with the camera's timer or a long remote shutter release cable in the past.
@LifetimeTravelmates
@LifetimeTravelmates 4 жыл бұрын
@@bfs5113 thanks! not that i am into selfies, but since it's also photography...i wondered. yeah, i guess it will be a matter of habit!
@bfs5113

@@LifetimeTravelmates Yeah, if you shoot enough photos with intent, then your techniques will spill over to your snapshots even without thinking about them. However, it dilutes the pure joy of photography.

I have to agree but hate the fact that the photographer have to give all to the viewer and viewer is lazy by nature. Just like tv, or KZfaq videos...there is not much space for thinking or subtly suggesting. All have to be cut, and peeled and prepare ready to digest... ☹️
